This paper proposes a method for extracting tyre characteristics from the tyre sounds. The wavelet analysis is able to visualize the sounds in the time-frequency domain. From the vision, we can obtain much more vivid information on the tyre than just listening to them with our ears. We performed the experiments of recording some sounds of normal and studless tyres with a tyre-testing bench. Then we calculated the wavelet transforms of their sounds, and succeeded in discriminating them by their characteristic frequency bands in the wavelet domain. On the basis of the results, the more specific differences between normal and studless tyres are shown in their power spectrum densities.

Sub-Resolution Assists Features (SRAF) is a well known and well described method for process window improvement. The introduction of such a technique is not always an easy task for two reasons. On one hand the SRAF placement rules must be defined very well and on the other hand an empirical resist model must be created, which describes the process. Model based Optical and Process effects correction (MB-OPC) is using an empirical model so called black box, which must be able to predict properly the printing feature for any kind of complex design configuration. When SRAF are implemented in the design, the degree of freedom for the MB-OPC can be reduced. Beside that effort to predetermine as required as possible the target layer, SRAF placement rules and SRAF printing restrictions will limit the OPC. MB-OPC has to cover both the parameters space corresponding to areas in which SRAF are placed and the parameter space for which no SRAF has been implemented. Of course, it could also be possible to apply the correction of the proximity effect of a complex design with SRAF by an extensive rule-based OPC. Nevertheless the advantage of MB-OPC exists in the possibility to verify the design after data Preparation by simulating it with the help of the calibrated model. However one should not trust the simulation alone, always a verification of the design on silicon would be necessary, by comparing simulation to SEM images. Beside the advantages of MB-OPC also weaknesses exist in the meantime, which could require a combination of rule-based and model-based OPC, so called "hybrid OPC". Empirical models are very often only able to predict the proximity behavior due to a certain range, which is called the optical range of a model. Distances bigger than this range will be covered by extrapolations. This procedure would be correct, if the proximity behavior was as constant as in the area inside the optical range.

This paper presents a technique, the Quantum Web Field, designed to give an ambient visualisation of the current activity on a Web site. It uses the paths of past visitors to the site and a self-organising map to build a diffuse 'probabilistic' mapping of pages to cells in a 2D matrix, where highly traversed page-links tend to be closer to each other. The paths of current visitors appear as intelligible trails giving a sense of purposeful human activity rather than offering detailed analysis. The visualisation is not constrained by either the complexity or the number of pages in the site.

ImageSurfer is a tool designed to explore correlations between two 3D scalar fields. Our scientific goal was to determine where a protein is located, and how much its concentration varies along the membrane of a neuronal dendrite. The 3D scalar field data sets fall into two categories: dendritic plasma membranes (defining the structure) and immunofluorescent staining (defining protein concentration along the structure). ImageSurfer enables scientists to analyze relationships between multiple data sets obtained with confocal microscopy by providing 3D surface view, height field, and graphing tools. Each tool reduces the complexity of the problem by extracting a restricted subset of data: finding a region of interest in 3D; getting a sense of relative concentrations in 2D, and getting exact concentration values in 1D. The current design is presented, along with the rationale for each design decision. The tool is already proving useful for data exploration, analysis, and presentation.

A new color coding scheme which can fully retrieve the directional information of diffusion tensor image (DTI) with maximum use of the color space is proposed and implemented. This new scheme overcomes the loss of directional information in conventional schemes and easy to implement. Comparison between the new scheme and the conventional color coding method are presented using the DTI data of human brain.

Dynamic 3D models generated from historical, time stamped data provide opportunities for insights and understanding that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to gain in applications as diverse as the teaching and learning of history and the analysis of aerospace experiments. This paper describes how historical data in a temporal database can be used to generate dynamic 3D models expressed in VRML. The models include facilities to move back and forth in time, to hide or reveal groups of objects and their labels and to show the paths traced by individual objects as they move through space and time. The change of shape of objects over time can also be modelled. The tools described in this paper enable the user to create these 3D worlds automatically without needing to know anything about the underlying 3D modelling language employed.

The automotive industry demands visual support for the verification of the quality of their products from the design phase to the manufacturing phase. This implies the need of tools for measurement planning, programming measuring devices, managing measurement data, and the visual exploration of the measurement results. To improve the quality control throughout the whole process chain an integration of such tools in a platform independent framework is crucial. We present eMMA (enhanced Measure Management Application), a client/server system integrating measurement planning, data management, and straightforward as well as sophisticated visual exploration tools in a single framework.

This paper describes a novel approach to representing experimental biological data in metabolic networks. The aim is to allow biologists to visualise and analyse the data in the context of the underlying processes. Biological networks can be modelledas graphs and visualised using graph drawing methods. We present a general method for mapping experimental data onto nodes and edges of a graph and to visualise the data-enriched networks in 2 1/2 dimensions such that the data is easy to understand. Ourfocus is on time series data occurring during developmental analysis. We demonstrate the utility of our approach by a real world example from the seed development of barley (Hordeum vulgare).

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a magnetic resonance imaging method that can be used to measure local information about the structure of white matter within the human brain. Combining DTI data with the computational methods of MR tractography, neuroscientists can estimate the locations and sizes of nerve bundles (white matter pathways) that course through the human brain. Neuroscientists have used visualization techniques to better understand tractography data, but they often struggle with the abundance and complexity of the pathways. We describe a novel set of interaction techniques that make it easier to explore and interpret such pathways. Specifically, our application allows neuroscientists to place and interactively manipulate box-shaped regions (or volumes of interest) to selectively display pathways that pass through specific anatomical areas. A simple and flexible query language allows for arbitrary combinations of these queries using Boolean logic operators. Queries can be further restricted by numerical path properties such as length, mean fractional anisotropy, and mean curvature. By precomputing the pathways and their statistical properties, we obtain the speed necessary for interactive question-and-answer sessions with brain researchers. We survey some questions that researchers have been asking about tractography data and show how our system can be used to answer these questions efficiently.

This paper aims at discussing clustering algorithm based on learning vector quantization (LVQ) using a kernel function in support vector machines. Furthermore, self-organizing map (SOM) using a kernel function is considered. Examples of clustering using different techniques are shown and effects of the kernel function are discussed.
