This paper presents the use of the openGL technology in the construction of three-dimensional graphs for the exhibition of the results of power flow algorithms in CAD tools for simulation and analysis of geo-located electric energy distribution networks, in order to present to the user a clear way to evaluate the general voltage behavior along the network.

Fuzzy-based clustering algorithm is becoming popular in image processing, especially in image segmentation. Based on the degree of the membership function, each pixel can be grouped into "natural group" of pixels according to the spatial coordinate using their values. In this work we present features extraction based on fuzzy clustering and segmentation onto the motion region for medium field surveillance application. Instead of using blob analysis, we believe that fuzzy based clustering algorithm, can also be used to generate different clusters. Incorporating the motion-based segmentation the complexity of the fuzzy clustering is also reduced because only the motion region is processed to the clustering algorithm.

In this paper, we have proposed an image processing system for the acquisition and processing of three-dimensional images based on confocal scanning laser microscopy for the purpose of three-dimensional visualization and quantitative analysis of cell nuclei. The three-dimensional visualization methods can be divided into surface rendering and volume rendering. The way that surface rendering is used within this system is based on contour modeling. This method consists of several steps as follows. The first step is to preprocess the volume data obtained. Secondly, the extraction of the contours of each slice is carried out. Thirdly, smoothing algorithms are used to refine the contour data and remove wiggles. Since the surface rendering accounts only for the surface, the inside is not visible. Therefore, based on the basic volume rendering pipeline, we implemented the volume rendering. In the quantification step, in order to extract quantitative features, we made a three-dimensional labeling method based on slice information. Compared to the conventional algorithms, this method has advantages due to the use of memory is highly efficient and it is possible to combine a variety of two-dimensional labeling algorithms to find an appropriate labeling to its application. After applying the labeling algorithm, we extracted the measurements for the three-dimensional quantitative analysis of cell nuclei: nuclear volume, surface area and spherical shape factor. This could become a way to improve the accuracy and reproducibility of quantifying cell nuclei. We believe that our method will become a useful diagnostic tool for the medical image analysis.

There is a significant need for technologies that improve flight safety and reduce maintenance and support costs for aircraft turbine engines. The C17 aircraft is being used extensively in the fight against terror in Iraq and other parts of the world. Engines are being stressed with both high operation temperatures and a severe short take off and landing environment. The current C17/F117 engines do not have an engine vibration monitoring system. If high vibration conditions occur the flight crew cannot easily identify the problem engine. IAC is developing an airborne turbine engine diagnostics system (aTEDS) for the C17/F117 engine. aTEDS is designed to automatically collect, process, and monitor vibration data collected from the F117 engine. In addition to the on-board system aTEDS includes a laptop PC ground based diagnostic system to aid in data collection, visualization, analysis and fault isolation. The description of the aTEDS system and preliminary results from collection and processing of T1 C17 flight data is presented in this paper.

The IME supports the development, execution, user interaction and archiving of models. It provides configuration management, visualization tools, and collaboration capabilities. Additionally, the IME supports creating, managing and developing modeling analyses over their entire life cycles, publishing model and analysis information for availability throughout the user community and managing legacy information without regard to original formats, database organizations or computing platforms.

The recent technological advances are producing huge data sets in almost all fields of scientific research, from astronomy to genetics. Although each research field often requires ad-hoc, fine tuned, procedures to properly exploit all the available information inherently present in the data, there is an urgent need for a new generation of general computational theories and tools capable to boost most human activities of data analysis. Here, we propose probabilistic principal surfaces (PPS) as an effective high-D data visualization and clustering tool for data mining applications, emphasizing its flexibility and generality of use in data-rich field. In order to better illustrate the potentialities of the method, we also provide a real world case-study by discussing the use of PPS for the analysis of yeast gene expression levels from microarray chips.

The paper presents a simple novel approach to data representability, based on the concept of relative data variation for a pixel. Typical cases of signals are analyzed from the representability point of view, with the focus on genomic signals. It is shown that the variation of genomic data along nucleotide sequences, specifically the cumulated and unwrapped phase of complex genomic signals, can be visualized adequately as simple lines for low and large scales, while for medium scales (up to several hundred samples per pixel) the approach used for statistical data representation must be used.

This paper presents the use of the OpenGL (Open Graphic Library) technology in the development of a graphical computational tool, object-oriented, for modeling, simulation and analysis of geo-located electrical distribution networks, where the advantages of the OpenGL technology is explored as the development speed and the improvement of the system's performance. The conversion of the graphical data for the OpenGL environment is discussed, as well as, its organization in a system of layers where the possibilities of visualization offered by the technology is explored.

3D computer modeling and visualization of geological structures is currently a topical research area. Most of common methods to be able to reconstruct 3D geological models require enough raw data and storage space. But in fact the known data sets are discrete and sparse. This paper presents a novel approach to modeling geological structures in 3D with all data from investigations and interpretations. NURBS technique is improved to build the VisualGeo system as 3D geological modeling environment. Following the object-oriented and classified modeling method, all kinds of geological structures could be simulated and the whole 3D geological model was set up systematically by graphical operations and texture mapping. Finally an example was given to display the constructed models and some visualizations of geologic analysis. The successful application and popularization in practice of the system indicate that it will have much applied importance.

The gas-solids flow in a dense pneumatic conveying many interesting features related to their 3-dimensional and unsteady nature. The flows can be investigated by an electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) system. The tomographic data captured by ECT system are processed by means of functional analysis to allow a better understanding of the three-dimensional flow behaviour. Such an analysis enables the investigation of the solids behaviour in a turbulent gas-solids flow. In this approach the whole flow is defined as an n-dimensional image vector, which describes the instantaneous and local changes in solids concentration. Preliminary results of the behaviour of gas-solids' flow by the proposed method are presented.
