The study of embodied communication requires access to mul-tiple data sources such as multistream video and audio, various derived and meta-data such as gesture, head, posture, facial expression and gaze information. The common element that runs through these data is the co-temporality of the multiple modes of behavior. In this paper, we present the multimedia visualization for Situated Temporal analysis (MacVisSTA) system for the analysis of multimodal human communication through video, audio, speech transcriptions, and gesture and head orientation data. The system uses a multiple linked representation strategy in which different rep-resentations are linked by the current time focus. In this framework, the multiple display components associated with the disparate data types are kept in synchrony, each compo-nent serving as both a controller of the system as well as a display. Hence the user is able to analyze and manipulate the data from different analytical viewpoints (e.g. through the time-synchronized speech transcription or through motion segments of interest). MacVisSTA supports analysis of the synchronized data at varying timescales. It provides an annotation interface that permits users to code the data into 'music-score' objects, and to make and organize multimedia observa-tions about the data. Hence MacVisSTA integrates flexible visualization with annotation within a single framework. An XML database manager has been created for storage and search of annotation data. We compare the system with other existing annotation tools with respect to functionality and interface design. The software runs on Macintosh OS X computer systems.

Federal government agencies have collected large and highly complex federal statistical summaries and geo-reference data. Methods and tools for identifying patterns and uncovering multivariate relationships in the complex datasets have drawn attention in multiple fields. The approach we present here extends from and integrates perspectives from multiple fields, including exploratory data analysis (EDA), geovisualization, information visualization, and data mining. Important components of our research are supported by a NSF Digital Government grant (#99883451). Other support comes from a National Cancer Institute (NCI) contract. Our DG research is now being extended to develop comprehensive multivariate analysis methods and tools, through a grant from NCI (CA95949).

The paper presents a methodology of assessment of distributed systems in the presence of exceptions and errors. The analysis is done by identifying data transitions for a system and deriving general characteristics about system behavior. Additionally, characteristics of internal subsystems are calculated. Distributed dependencies are modeled as basic dependencies between methods and compound dependencies existing in the system. The analysis answers the question how distributed interactions influence the result of execution, which supports the identification of correct programming constructs. The theoretical model is used in a developed tool that allows to automatically modify, trace and analyze distributed applications. Additionally, a simulator is developed to estimate the behavior of a real system. An example of experimental use of the methodology is presented.

The Applications Area of the LHC Computing Grid Project (LCG) develops part of the physics applications software and associated infrastructure that can be shared among the LHC experiments. The scope includes common applications software infrastructure, frameworks, libraries and tools, together with domain specific components such as simulation and analysis toolkits. The work of the applications area is conducted within a number of projects: software process and infrastructure (SPI), persistency framework (POOL), core libraries and services (SEAL), physicist interface (PI), and simulation (SIMU). ROOT, which is a general purpose object oriented framework that implements software for managing object persistency and for supporting interactive data analysis and visualization, is also used to implement vital parts of Applications Area software. The project has been in an active development phase for more than 2 years and is being integrated by the experiments in their frameworks on which they base the applications used in their data challenges. An overview of the project is given, together with first experience in its use and an outlook on future plans.

In recent work, several supervised spectral embedding procedures have been proposed. Although experimentally validated, the construction of these algorithms was rather ad hoc. This paper shows how supervised locally linear embedding can be seen as performing a local Fisher mapping. A new formulation, combining linear and Fisher embedding, is proposed and experimentally validated.

This experimental study was designed to compare three different types of hypermedia display interfaces in hypermedia design. They are: (1) browser-scroll, (2) frame-based, and (3) popup-window interfaces. This study also investigated the potential interaction between the interface and students' prior knowledge, since prior knowledge has long been considered an important learning variable for acquiring new information. 145 undergraduate students participated in the study. A statistical multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was performed to analyze collected data. Results showed significant main effects of the independent variables in all the criterion tests except for the treatment effect on the comprehension test.

The paper introduces the method of parallel elaboration of intelligent agents (IAS) as layers of functional units (FUs) which are recursive on all levels (FUs, layers of FUs, IAs). A refined technique of this method are the coordinatewise approaches (coordinatewise analysis, coordinatewise optimization, etc.) The technique of coordinatewise analysis is introduced with its mathematical formalism, diagram and an example for application. Discussion and conclusions list the perspectives for implementations in industry.

Housing in our society is always associated with a wide range of social and economic issues. Examination of the differences between different community sectors based on different social and economic factors in regard to housing can help to address questions raised in public and political debates not just about housing - but about the underlying parity of economic provision, for which housing is often considered to be a prominent proxy. In this paper, the data mining techniques are used to analyze a regional housing condition survey dataset. Three data mining modeling techniques are applied, namely linear and nonlinear regression modeling and neural nets. Advanced algorithm is used to build the models more efficiently. Interesting patterns extracted using these data mining modeling techniques are presented and advantages and disadvantages of the three data mining techniques are discussed.

eL-CID (e-Learning by Communicating Iterative Design) demonstrates computer programs' iterative design using computer animation. It translates descriptions of iterative editing into an animated demonstration. An analysis of the work of expert programming trainers shows that successive versions of a program are shown statically. eL-CID attempts to visualise the changes dynamically as if code was being edited in front of the user. Several example demonstrations have been developed. To the author's knowledge, this is the first system designed to visualise the iterative process of program development.

Information visualisation (IV) involves representing information visually as a mean of getting insight into data. Many techniques are available in visualising information, with city/urban planning as one of them. The challenge that lies with city/urban planning technique in information visualisation is how to enhance the information legibility as to assist users in their way finding task. Therefore, Universiti Malaya (DM) campus is used as the subject domain to study the efficiency of the city visualisation method applied to 3D virtual environment. Few navigation aids are identified and incorporated into the visualised virtual environment, and the effectiveness of these navigation aids in helping users finding the information in the 3D virtual environment, by means of navigating within it is investigated.
