eL-CID (e-Learning by Communicating Iterative Design) demonstrates computer programs' iterative design using computer animation. It translates descriptions of iterative editing into an animated demonstration. An analysis of the work of expert programming trainers shows that successive versions of a program are shown statically. eL-CID attempts to visualise the changes dynamically as if code was being edited in front of the user. Several example demonstrations have been developed. To the author's knowledge, this is the first system designed to visualise the iterative process of program development.

Information visualisation (IV) involves representing information visually as a mean of getting insight into data. Many techniques are available in visualising information, with city/urban planning as one of them. The challenge that lies with city/urban planning technique in information visualisation is how to enhance the information legibility as to assist users in their way finding task. Therefore, Universiti Malaya (DM) campus is used as the subject domain to study the efficiency of the city visualisation method applied to 3D virtual environment. Few navigation aids are identified and incorporated into the visualised virtual environment, and the effectiveness of these navigation aids in helping users finding the information in the 3D virtual environment, by means of navigating within it is investigated.

Time can play a crucial role in the analysis of web usage. Temporal data mining has been an active area of research. However, there is little work on the analysis of cluster memberships over time. Typical clustering operations in web mining involve finding natural groupings of web resources or web users. Changes in clusters can provide important clues about the changing nature of the usage of a web site, as well as changing loyalties of web users. This paper addresses two different types of temporal changes in cluster analysis. The changes in cluster compositions over time and changes in cluster memberships of individual web users. The paper also proposes the concept of temporal cluster migration matrices (TCMM). The proposed matrices are shown to be useful for analyzing the changing nature of a web site as well as changing patronages of individual web users. TCMM can be used as a visualization technique to study results obtained from temporal data mining, which can be more complex because of the additional time dimension.

This paper discusses the use of computer-generated animation (CGA) in a court of law, CGA is a way of visualising evidence or information for a particular case. In this paper, the case involves a fatal road collision. The concepts and methods under consideration described in this paper deal with the reliability and accuracy of CGA dependent upon the forensic evidence. The paper has five sections. The first explains the nature of animation and the distinction between animation and forensic animation. The second describes the general context of evidence, from a legal aspect. The third section analyses the correlation between evidence and knowledge, based on the theory of knowledge. The fourth section elucidates the reliability and accuracy of CGA based on the evidence that has been used to create the animation. The final section concludes the analysis by discussing whether a certain CGA is reliable and accurate enough to demonstrate an expert's opinion in a court of law.

The evolution of computational science over the last decade has resulted in a dramatic increase in raw problem solving capabilities. This growth has given rise to advances in scientific and engineering simulations that have put a high demand on tools for high-performance large-scale data exploration and analysis. These simulations have the potential to generate large amounts of data. Humans, however are relatively poor at gaining insight from raw numerical data, and as a result, have used visualization as a tool for understanding, interpreting and exploring data of all types and sizes. Allowing for efficient visual explorations of data, however, requires that the ratio of knowledge gained versus the cost of the visualization be maximized. This, in turn, mandates the integration of principles from human perception. Understanding perception as it relates to visualization requires that we understand not only the biology of the human visual system, but principles from vision theory, and perceptual psychology as well. This panel is the result of bringing together practioners and researchers from a broad spectrum of interests relating to the ability to maximize the amount of information that is effectively perceived from a given visualization. Position statements will be given by researchers interested in perceptual psychology and the perception of natural images, integrating art and design principles, non-photorealistic rendering techniques, and the use of global illumination methods to provide benefical perceptual cues.

We present a new bio-inspired algorithm that dynamically creates and visualizes groups of data. This algorithm uses the concepts of a flock of agents that move together in a complex manner with simple local rules. Each agent represents one data. The agents move with the aim of creating homogeneous groups of data that evolve together in a 2D environment. These created groups are visualized in real time and help the domain expert to understand the underlying class structure of the data set, like for example a realistic number of classes, clusters of similar data, isolated data, etc. We present several extensions of this algorithm and present results from artificial and real-world data.

data transformation problems are very common and are challenging to implement for large and complex datasets. We describe a new approach for specifying data mapping transformations between XML schemas using a combination of automated schema analysis agents and selective user interaction. A graphical tool visualizes parts of the two schemas to be mapped and a variety of agents analyze all or parts of the schema, voting on the likelihood of matching subsets. The user can confirm or reject suggestions, or even allow schema matches to be automatically determined, incrementally building up to a fully-mapped schema. An implementation of the mapping specification can then be generated.

Stochastic neighbor embedding (SNE) is a probabilistic method of embedding objects, described by high-dimensional vectors or by pair wise dissimilarities, into a lower dimensional space in a way that neighbor identities are preserved. Despite of the useful behavior of SNE, it suffers from its slow convergence due to a gradient-based implementation. In this paper we present a fast SNE algorithm which is approximately 4-6 times faster than the gradient-based SNE algorithm. Our fast SNE algorithm, named TR-SNE employs a trust-region (TR) method which finds a direction and a step size in an efficient and reliable manner with the help of a quadratic model of the objective function. We confirm the high performance and the fast convergence of our TR-SNR through numerical experiments.

A new computational method to study within-host viral evolution is explored to better understand the evolution and pathogenesis of viruses. Traditional phylogenetic tree methods are better suited to study relationships between contemporaneous species, which appear as leaves of a phylogenetic tree. However, viral sequences are often sampled serially from a single host. Consequently, data may be available at the leaves as well as the internal nodes of a phylogenetic tree. Recombination may further complicate the analysis. Such relationships are not easily expressed by traditional phylogenetic methods. We propose a new algorithm, called MinPD, based on minimum pairwise distances. Our algorithm uses multiple distance matrices and correlation rules to output a MinPD tree or network. We test our algorithm using extensive simulations and apply it to a set of HIV sequence data isolated from one patient over a period often years. The proposed visualization of the phylogenetic tree/spl bsol/network further enhances the benefits of our methods.
