There is an increasing demand for high quality interactive 3D visualization of geographical datasets. Because of the inherent geometric complexity and data size, this goal is often unachievable even with high performance graphics workstations, unless the original terrain height field mesh is simplified and approximated in order to reduce the number of geometric primitives that need to be rendered without compromising visual quality. This paper discusses the methodology and implementation aspects of our research work to improve the quality and speed of rendering general purpose desktop PCs by enhancing the geometrical and topological techniques for handing the very large terrain data sets. The proposed algorithm uses a compact and efficient multi-resolution grid representation and employs a variable screen-space threshold to bound the maximum error of the projected image. The appropriate level of detail is computed and generated dynamically in real-time, allowing for smooth changes of resolution across area of the surface. The method is different from the triangle-based LOD algorithms and is optimized for modern, low-end consumer 3D graphics cards and minimizes CPU usage during rendering. The software has been tested on real-world height maps as well as satellite phototextures of size up to 16K/spl middot/*** experimental result shows that the proposed algorithm can dynamically generate view-dependent multi-resolution LOD terrain model and real-time rendering can be attained.

In this paper, we address the potential offered by Virtual Reality and scientific simulation for 3D modeling and immersive visualization of huge genomic sequences. Advanced work on 3D data modeling and structuring is proposed. In Bioinformatics, DNA sequences are often represented within linear format. However, they also have a three-dimensional structure potentially suitable for genomic analysis. The representation of such 3D structure allows biologists to observe and analyze genomes in an interactive way at different levels: from gene to chromosome. We developed a powerful software platform that provides a new point of view for sequences analysis: ADN-Viewer. Nevertheless, a classical eukaryotic chromosome of 40 million base pairs requires about 6 Gbytes of 3D data. In order to manage these huge masses of data in real-time, we designed various scene management algorithms and immersive human-computer interaction for user-friendly data exploration.

We present a novel scheme to interactively visualize time-varying scalar fields defined on a structured grid. The underlying approach is to maximize the use of current graphics hardware by using 3D texture mapping. This approach commonly suffers from an expensive voxelization of each time-step as well as from large size of the voxel array approximating each step. Hence, in our scheme, instead of explicitly voxelizing each scalar field, we directly store each time-step as a three dimensional texture in its native form. We create the function that warps a voxel grid into the given structured grid. At rendering time, we reconstruct the function at each pixel using hardware-based trilinear interpolation. The resulting coordinates allow us to compute the scalar value at this pixel using a second texture lookup. For fixed grids, the function remains constant across time-steps and only the scalar field table needs to be re-loaded as a texture. Our new approach achieves excellent performance with relatively low texture memory requirements and low approximation error.

The public security issue is one of the main concerns in the Brazilian Society. The Civil Police's Intelligence Department idealizes OMEGA, as a tool to support the investigative activities by providing fast access to consolidated and valuable information according to the users needs. OMEGA achieves this challenge by using data integration to a unique database and also an artificial intelligence method that retrieves crime reports through conceptual and contextual analysis of texts inserted in an open-entry field. OMEGA is a Web application accessed mainly by sheriffs and investigators through the police intranet. OMEGA is currently being in restricted use to approximately 100 police departments in order to give the development team a better control of its deployment.

The motivation of this report is to better understand why there are differences between regulated demand and real demand in ATFM. We analyze past flight data from two different points of view: First, we take a look on the number of aircraft entering sectors. visualization gives us intuition on regularities in the data. We interpret regulated and real demand as random variables where the only knowledge we have are the realizations in our database. We infer properties of these variables, especially on how they interact with each other. Secondly, we compare differences in declared and flown length and duration. This gives us an image on how accurate flight plan information is on a daily basis. Our main hypothesis is that we analyze data of groups of aircraft rather than on a plane to plane basis because deviations of single aircraft are not independent from the others. We conclude with an outlook on a statistical model of the misbehavior of groups of aircraft dependent on the regulated demand in order to improve current ATFM.

Finite state machines (FSM) are a basic component in hardware design; they represent the transformation between inputs and outputs for sequential designs. FSMs can be represented graphically, which would help the designer to visualize and design in a more efficient way; on the other hand the designer requires a fast direct way to convert the visualized design to hardware description language (HDL) code directly in order to simulate and implement it for synthesis and analysis. In this paper, we present a tool which, starting from a graphical FSM representation, produces a behavioral HDL code which can be directly analyzed and synthesized.

Scientific visualization (SciVis) has evolved past the point where one undergraduate course can cover all of the necessary topics. So the question becomes "how do we teach SciVis to this generation of students?" Some examples of current courses are: A graduate Computer Science (CS) course that prepares the next generation of SciVis researchers. An undergraduate CS course that prepares the future software architects/developers of packages such as vtk, vis5D and AVS. A class that teaches students how to do SciVis with existing software packages and how to deal with the lack of interoperability between those packages (via either a CS service course or a supercomputing center training course). An inter-disciplinary course designed to prepare computer scientists to work with the "real" scientists (via either a CS or Computational Science course). In this panel, we will discuss these types of courses and the advantages and disadvantages of each. We will also talk about some issues that you have probably encountered at your university: How do we keep the graphics/vis-oriented students from going to industry? How does SciVis fit in with evolving Computational Science programs? Is SciVis destined to be a service course at most universities? How do we deal with the diverse backgrounds of students that need SciVis?

The gene ontology (GO) resource can be used as a powerful tool to uncover the properties shared among, and specific to, a list of genes produced by high-throughput functional genomics studies, such as microarray studies. In the comparative analysis of several gene lists, researchers maybe interested in knowing which GO terms are enriched in one list of genes but relatively depleted in another. Statistical tests such as Fisher's exact test or Chi-square test can be performed to search for such GO terms. However, because multiple GO terms are tested simultaneously, individual p-values from individual tests do not serve as good indicators for picking GO terms. Furthermore, these multiple tests are highly correlated, usual multiple testing procedures that work under an independence assumption are not applicable. In this paper we introduce a procedure, based on false discovery rate (FDR), to treat this correlated multiple testing problem. This procedure calculates a moderately conserved estimator of q-value for every GO term. We identify the GO terms with q-values that satisfy a desired level as the significant GO terms. This procedure has been implemented into the GoSurfer software. GoSurfer is a windows based graphical data mining tool. It is freely available at http://***.

Event related potentials (ERPs) are of interest to many researchers seeking knowledge about the functions of the brain. ERPs are low-frequency events that are usually obscured in single trial analysis. To visualize these signals; most of the reliable solutions at the present time use the ensemble averages of many single trials. In this paper, a wavelet-based method called statistical coefficient selection (SCS) is used for the extraction of ERPs from EEG signals. Unlike other wavelet-based denoising methods, the current method does not focus on the wavelet coefficients of the signal itself. Instead, it selects the coefficients based on the statistical study of trials from training data sets. Simulation results show the superiority of the proposed SCS method in extracting ERPs in comparison with other filtering approaches.

The precomputation of the different summary views of a data cube is critical to improving the response time of data cube queries for online analytical processing (OLAP). The computation of the full data cube, representing all 2/sup d/ views, has been studied extensively. However, the full cube is often too large to be computed and stored, and for some applications all views are not even required. Hence, it is important to provide efficient methods for the computation of partial data cubes consisting of an arbitrary, user selected, subset of the 2/sup d/ possible views. In this paper, we study the top-down computation of partial ROLAP data cubes. We present both sequential and parallel methods for top-down partial data cube construction. Our experimental results indicate close to linear performance improvement for partial data cube computation. For example, when selecting 50% of the views our method requires only 55% of the time required to build the full cube, and when selecting 75% of the views our method requires just 82% of the full cube time.
