The development of Web technologies has accelerated the offer of (commercial) e-learning platforms. This paper is a first step toward the design and implementation of a platform called LeVin-Qam whose main functionalities are: (a) the provision and management of a series of exercises and tests (authoring tools); (b) a personalized navigation through the existing collection of exercises and tests, taking into account the user profile (level of skills) and history; (c) the analysis of user answers, its storing into a database and its mining. As case studies we have chosen (1) the learning of SQL, the standard database query language, and (2) formal proofs for propositional logic, to validate the platform functionalities and the mining of answers.

We propose a data transformation approach that facilitates data clustering. Our approach, called MembershipMap, strives to extract the underlying structure or sub-concepts of each raw attribute automatically, and uses the orthogonal union of these sub-concepts to define a new, semantically richer, space. The sub-concept labels of each point in the original space determine the position of that point in the transformed space. Since sub-concept labels are prone to uncertainty inherent in the original data and in the initial extraction process, a combination of labeling schemes that are based on different measures of uncertainty will be presented. We show that the transformed spaces could be used as flexible pre-processing tools to support such tasks as sampling, data cleaning, and outlier detection. We also show that the information extracted from transformed spaces could be used to improve the performance of clustering algorithms.

The relevance feedback based on a keyword map is proposed so that a Web interface can be more interactive. There exists vast amount of information in the Web, from which users usually gather information without definite information needs. Therefore, it is difficult for users to organize and understand what they have gathered from the Web. From this viewpoint, we have proposed the concept of RBA-based interaction, in which analysis operation aims to assist users in understanding the context of their Web interaction. However, the prototype interface currently focuses on the information flow from the interface to users. In this paper, the pair of keywords that reflects a user's interest is extracted from the keyword map modified by the user. Experimental results show relevant documents can be retrieved with the extracted keyword pair.

The computation, visualization, and interpretation of brain variability remains a significant challenge in computational neuroanatomy. Current deformable registration methods can generate, for each vertex of a polygonal mesh modeling the cortical surface, a distribution of displacement vectors between the individual models and their average, which can be summarized as a covariance tensor. While analysis of anatomical covariance tensor fields promises insight into the structural components of aging and disease, basic understanding of the tensor field structure is hampered by the lack of effective methods to create informative and interactive visualizations. We describe a novel application of superquadric tensor glyphs to anatomic covariance tensor fields, supplemented by colormaps of important tensor attributes. The resulting visualizations support a more detailed characterization of population variability of brain structure than possible with previous methods, while also suggesting directions for subsequent quantitative analysis.

Humanitarian demining has become a serious international issue nowadays due to the post-war buried unexploded ordnance (UXO) and land mines. In this research, a new technique based on linear prediction is proposed to discriminate UXO from non-UXO targets. The proposed technique takes into account the symmetry of the ground penetrating radar (GPR) signal returning from a buried object. We use the GPR data set collected by Battelle company and the Ohio State University from the Jefferson Proving Ground (JPG), U.S.A. in the experiments The results evaluated in terms of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves show that our proposed technique has a better detection performance than a traditional detection technique based on energy. The false alarm reductions at 100% detection by the baseline technique and the proposed technique are about 11% and 23%, respectively, compared to a situation where no technique is applied.

Continuous monitoring of physiological signals has the potential to greatly improve the quality of life of patients with chronic diseases. Recent advances in sensor technology make the capture of such signals possible. In this paper, we present BioStream, a real-time, and operator-based software solution for managing physiological sensor streams. It is built on top of a general-purpose stream processing software architecture. The system processes data using plug-in analysis components that can be easily composed into plans using a graphical programming environment. The architecture is scalable, allowing implementation on systems ranging from desktops to server farms. It guarantees real-time response and data persistence in a distributed environment. We apply this architecture to the problem of multipatient, real-time, physiological signal monitoring, analysis, indexing and visualization.

For MSR robots to successfully configure from one configuration into another, the control system must be able to visualize the current structure of the robot, which cannot be done without appropriate information about each module's docking status. Although the type of information required to visualize the structure of a MSR robot differs with the physical design of the modules, there are essential information that are commonly required, such as docking orientation and identity of neighboring modules. This paper presents a novel multi-port and multi-orientation modular robot, and a representation method that can uniquely represent the geometric structure of a group of connected modules and to analyze the number of "reconfigurable DOF" within the structure. The proposed method uses labeled planar graphs and incidence matrices to describe the docking status of the modules within the structure, which helps to effectively encode the data in computer understandable expressions. In addition to the work in configuration analysis, an innovative mechanism for detecting the orientation of each docking port is also presented.

Knowledge-based engineering (KBE) and finite element analysis (FEA) have been used widely in sheet metal forming area. However, the acquisition of knowledge keeps bottleneck when building knowledge base in KBE. To properly understand the results of the FEA and consequently choose the appropriate design, a lot of knowledge and experience are needed. FEA can generate massive data, in which large amounts of usefully implicit knowledge is hidden. Thus, knowledge acquisition from them is prospective to ease the above difficulties by applying knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) technology. In this study, the characteristics of the FEA data are discussed firstly. Then a framework of knowledge discovery from FEA data is proposed. Correspondingly, a data-mining algorithm named fuzzy-rough algorithm is developed to deal with the FEA simulation data. Finally, the stamping process of a square-cup part was studied as an example. The proposed knowledge discovery process is applied to obtain some useful, implicit production rules with efficiency measure. The result shows that knowledge discovery from FEA simulation data is valuable.

Duplication of code is a common phenomenon in the development and maintenance of large software systems. The detection and removal of duplicated code has become a standard activity during the refactoring phases of a software life-cycle. However, code duplication identification tends to produce large amounts of data making the understanding of the duplication situation as a whole difficult. Reengineers can easily lose sight of the forest for the trees. There is a need to support a qualitative analysis of the duplicated code. We propose a number of visualizations of duplicated source elements that support reengineers in answering questions, e.g., which parts of the system are connected by copied code or which parts of the system are copied the most.

In this paper we propose a novel method for learning a Mahalanobis distance measure to be used in the KNN classification algorithm. The algorithm directly maximizes a stochastic variant of the leave-one-out KNN score on the training set. It can also learn a low-dimensional linear embedding of labeled data that can be used for data visualization and fast classification. Unlike other methods, our classification model is non-parametric, making no assumptions about the shape of the class distributions or the boundaries between them. The performance of the method is demonstrated on several data sets, both for metric learning and linear dimensionality reduction.
