The purpose of this demonstration is to present the main features of the BioNavigation system. Scientific data collection needed in various stages of scientific discovery is typically performed manually. For each scientific object of interest (e.g., a gene, a sequence), scientists query a succession of Web resources following links between retrieved entries. Each of the steps provides part of the intended characterization of the scientific object. This process is sometimes partially supported by hard-coded scripts or complex queries that will be evaluated by a mediation-based data integration system or against a data warehouse. These approaches fail in guiding the scientists during the collection process. In contrast, the BioNavigation approach presented in the paper provides the scientists with information on the available alternative resources, their provenance, and the costs of data collection. The BioNavigation system enhances a mediation-based integration system and provides scientists with support for the following: to ask queries at a high conceptual level; to visualize the multiple alternative resources that may be exploited to execute their data collection queries; to choose the final execution path to evaluate their queries.

Nonphoto realistic rendering (NPR) methods have been proposed for more than ten years in the computer graphic field. Separately, within past few years, several algorithms for rendering surfaces from their points, or point sets directly, were proposed. But so far, no NPR like painterly rendering has been proposed for point sets. In this paper, we propose an interactive point-based painterly rendering algorithm. The interactive frame rate is achieved by using both a point-based approach to represent the geometry of the surface and an image-based approach for the rendering. Our algorithm achieves interactive rates and outperforms mesh-based previously reported results. A by-product of our work, we also provide a faster, higher quality IBPR algorithm. We have showed that using most sophisticated statistical approach, we could improve the rendering quality.

Parsing of programs with preprocessing directives and conditional compilation is challenging. Symbolic evaluation offers a fundamental and general approach to solve the main difficulties. It can find, for every line of code, the Boolean expression under which it is compiled or reached and all the possible values of preprocessing variables (macros) for each line of code. Conditional values have been shown an effective representation to do fast practical symbolic evaluation of preprocessing; but their interaction with macro expansion and evaluation has not been formally investigated. We present convergent rewrite systems over conditional values that can interact with macro expansion and evaluation and transform them into Boolean expressions. Once transformed, well known simplification techniques for Boolean expressions can be applied. This entails a more complete solution to the efficient symbolic evaluation of C-preprocessing using conditional values.

We present TUAnalyzer, a novel tool that extracts the template structure of C++ programs on the basis of the GNU C/C++ compiler's internal representation of a C/C++ translation unit. In comparison to other such tools, our tool is capable of supporting the extraction of function invocations that depend on the particular instantiation of C++ templates and to relate them to their particular template instantiation. TUAnalyzer produces RSF format output that can be easily fed into existing visualization and analysis tools such as Rigi or Graphviz. We motivate why this kind of template analysis information is essential to understand real-world legacy C++ applications. We present how our tool extracts this kind of information to allow others to build on our results and further use the template information. The applicability of our tool has been validated on real code as proof of concept. The results obtained with TUAnalyzer enable us and other approaches and tools to perform detailed studies of large (open source) C/C++ projects in the near future.

A central problem in machine learning is identifying a representative set of features from which we would construct a classification model for a particular task. This paper addresses the problem of feature selection for machine learning through a correlation and MSVM (modified support vector machines) based approach. The central hypothesis is that a good feature set contains features that are highly correlated with the class, yet uncorrelated with each other. So we introduce the CMFS (correlation and MSVM-based feature selection). First, CMFS ranks the features using MSVM according to their correlation with the class. Secondly, CMFS uses a forward selection search with correlation-based method to form feature subset. A feature can be added to the feature set or not decided by the class separability of the feature and the correlation with the already chosen features. Experiments on artificial and natural datasets show that, compared with other algorithms, CMFS typically eliminates well much more features with less time and higher accuracy.

In this paper, we present an efficient compression technique that is suitable for image/video communications over wireless (mobile) channel. Our technique uses basic directional difference operators to estimate corresponding detail subband images/videos from their approximation subband images/videos. We empirically found that the detail subband images/videos can be well approximated by the estimate subband images/videos. In this work, image and video are first decomposed using integer wavelet packet transform. Having established that detail subband images/videos can be estimated from the approximation subbands, the information needed to send over the wireless channel is only the most important subband images/videos, where we selected them via best basis selection algorithm. Next, after best basis selection, the selected subband components are encoded using either SPIHT (JPEG) for image or 3-D SPIHT for video and then the encoded data are sent over the wireless channel. The advantages of our algorithms are two folds. First, most of the computation used in our technique is performed in integer for the purpose of coding speed improvement. Second, the computation of our algorithm either SPIHT (JPEG) or 3-D SPIHT is reduced from its original computation by an order of magnitude. The reason is that in our algorithm either SPIHT (JPEG) or 3-D SPIHT is performed only on the set of important components (two or a few subband images/videos) instead of the whole image/video. Finally, we show that our proposed algorithm using SPIHT (3-D SPIHT) are better than pure JPEG (MPEG-2) both in terms of human visual image quality and computation complexity.

Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnet resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) has become an important source of information to aid breast cancer diagnosis. Nevertheless, next to the temporal sequence of 3D volume data from the DCE-MRI technique, the radiologist commonly adducts information from other modalities for his final diagnosis. Thus, the diagnosis process is time consuming and tools are required to support the human expert. We investigate an automatic approach that detects the location and delineates the extent of suspicious masses in multi-temporal DCE-MRI data sets. It applies the state-of-the-art support vector machine algorithm to the classification of the short-time series associated with each voxel. The ROC analysis shows an increased specificity in contrast to standard evaluations techniques.

Depth or line profiles on polished sections only provide partial and local information about the chemical distribution at the interface between two solids. Germination and growth, which happen during the reaction phase, can only be explored by a three-dimensional in-situ visualization. The most powerful means presently at our disposal are: (i) for non-destructive analysis, synchrotron microtomography, with a maximum lateral resolution of 0.29 mum (ESRF, European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, Grenoble, France), and, (ii) for destructive analysis, SIMS image reconstruction (resolution 0.2 mum), with a difficult quantitative interpretation. The object of this paper is to demonstrate that a 3D analysis of a series of AES images is possible at an unrivalled spatial resolution (lateral and depth) and coupled with chemical analysis. The interaction between titanium and carbon at moderate temperatures is considered here to illustrate the method. The sample is elaborated from a polished substrate of carbon on which a thin layer of titanium is deposited by PVD. Thereafter the sample has been thermally treated under secondary vacuum. The data set comprises 50 images (squares of side 7 mum) separated by 20 run, yielding to an analysis volume corresponding to a parallelepiped of 7 x 7 x 1 mum(3). On a sample maintained at 450degreesC for 30 min, the formation of TiC islands on a thickness of about 100 run has been observed. Copyright (C) 2004 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

The actual development of distributed information technologies and Java programming enables employing them also in the medical arena to support the retrieval, integration and evaluation of heterogeneous data and multimodal images in a web browser environment. With this aim, we used them to implement a client-server architecture based on software agents. The client side is a Java applet running in a web browser and providing a friendly medical user interface to browse and visualize different patient and medical test data, integrating them properly. The server side manages secure connections and queries to heterogeneous remote databases and file systems containing patient personal and clinical data. Based on the Java Advanced Imaging API, processing and analysis tools were developed to support the evaluation of remotely retrieved bioimages through the quantification of their features in different regions of interest. The Java platform-independence allows the centralized management of the implemented prototype and its deployment to each site where an intranet or internet connection is available. Giving healthcare providers effective support for comprehensively browsing, visualizing and evaluating medical images and records located in different remote repositories, the developed prototype can represent an important aid in providing more efficient diagnoses and medical treatments.

A dual port RAM, used in the local memories of a parallel accelerator, was designed and implemented to support the parallel-execution oriented volume rendering algorithm. The temporary processing results of the rendering, and so on, were stored in the memories. One port of the dual port RAM was connected to the multi-CPU by the Omega Net, and the other connected to the global bus to input data into the display cache. Thus, collision can be avoided by adopting mutual exclusions during the parallel operation. The designed dual port RAM can support asynchronous control, separate the reading operation from the writing operation and be read or written parallel by the multi-CPU. The RAM improves the throughput and the read/write ratio of the parallel volume rendering system efficiently and has good practicability.
