Diffusion-Based Population Statistics Using Tract Probability Maps

We present a novel technique for the tract-based statistical analysis of diffusion imaging data. In our technique, we represent each white matter (WM) tract as a tract probability map (TPM): a function mapping a point to its probability of belonging to the tract. We start by automatically clustering the tracts identified in the brain via tractography into TPMs using a novel Gaussian process framework. Then, each tract is modeled by the skeleton of its TPM, a medial representation with a tubular or sheet-like geometry. The appropriate geometry for each tract is implicitly inferred from the data instead of being selected a priori, as is done by current tract-specific approaches. The TPM representation makes it possible to average diffusion imaging based features along directions locally perpendicular to the skeleton of each WM tract, increasing the sensitivity and specificity of statistical analyses on the WM. Our framework therefore facilitates the automated analysis of WM tract bundles, and enables the quantification and visualization of tract-based statistical differences between groups. We have demonstrated the applicability of our framework by studying WM differences between 34 schizophrenia patients and 24 healthy controls.

AMEC was called upon in 2004 and again in 2008, to assist the Nashville District USACE in analyzing historical and current data, and displaying the data to help visualize the existing seepage issues at Wolf Creek Dam in south central Kentucky. The amount of information available from the 1940's era dam includes the original geotechnical investigations, design of the dam and detailed construction documentation, the remedial grouting programs, diaphragm wall construction, instrumentation and observations of the embankment and various supplemental investigations accumulated and archived over the past 60+ years. This has created an intimidating and complex volume of data. To assist our client to better understand the information and how differing sets of data relate to each other, we employed a tool originally developed for mining and environmental engineering applications. The study results were input into the MVS/EVS (Mining visualization System/Environmental visualization System) software program which provides 3-dimensional representations of multiple data sets. The original study, published in 2004, has been built upon with the data obtained from other studies and over 1,300 additional borings completed during calendar years 2007 and 2008 by ACT, Gannett Fleming, Willowstick, and others. The modeling programs were obtained from C-Tech Development Corporation (Kahuku, Hawaii). The historical and new data, were converted into the following layers: 1) Surface Topography, 2) Aerial Photography, including Lidar mapping imagery, 3) 3-D structures (grout curtains, diaphragm wall, etc.), 4) Diaphragm Wall, 5) Grout Curtain, 6) Geology, 7) Top of Rock compiled from numerous sources, 8) Temperature survey, 9) Piezometer (water level) data, 10) Wet Areas, 11) Reservoir level, 12) Willowstick data, 13) Multibeam sonar contours, and 14) Ongoing foundation grouting data. Upon its inception, WATERS Laboratory in Bowling Green, Kentucky was envisioned as a 'farmer's cooperative' of labs. This consortium of local, state and regional private and public sector entities maximizes each partner's ability to further their goals through resource sharing. The foundation of the lab was established in 2004 when Western Kentucky University (WKU) and Mammoth Cave National Park (MACA) of the National Park Service (NPS) entered into a Cooperative Agreement to share laboratory analytical equipment and personnel to maximize utility, productivity and scope of service. The Cooperative Agreement has resulted in the establishment of an operating environment that integrates and furthers the research, training and service components of the partners in the area of overlap pertinent to the natural resource protection mission of the NPS and the training and educational mission of WKU. This facility consolidates the research and regulatory grade environmental analytical instrumentation available to each partner and has resulted in optimal utilization of resources. This partnership permits programs to attain and exceed institutional goals for data collection, determination, analysis and visualization through coordinated collaboration and access to services traditionally beyond the resource capacities of each individual organization. This paper will explore the first five years of operation of this entity, its contribution to environmental engineering education, training and capacity development. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2009.

We present a trend analysis of the question answering (QA) domain. Using bibliometric mapping, we sketched the boundary of the domain by uncovering the topics central to and peripheral to QA research in the new millennium. This paper visualizes the evolution of concepts in the QA domain by studying the dynamics of the QA research during the periods 2000 - 2003 and 2004 - 2007. It was found that question classification, answer extraction, information retrieval, user interface, performance evaluation, Web, & natural language were the main topics in current QA research.

Disasters affecting infrastructure, such as the 2001 earthquakes in India, 2005 in Pakistan, 2008 in China and the 2004 tsunami in Asia, provide a common need for intelligent buildings and smart civil structures. Now, imagine massive reductions in time to get the infrastructure working again, realtime information on damage to buildings, massive reductions in cost and time to certify that structures are undamaged and can still be operated, reductions in the number of structures to be rebuilt (if they are known not to be damaged). Achieving these ideas would lead to huge, quantifiable, long‐term savings to government and industry. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can be deployed in buildings to make any civil structure both smart and intelligent. WSNs have recently gained much attention in both public and research communities because they are expected to bring a new paradigm to the interaction between humans, environment, and machines. This paper presents the deployment of WSN nodes in the Top Quality Centralized Instrumentation Centre (TQCIC). We created an ad hoc networking application to collect real‐time data sensed from the nodes that were randomly distributed throughout the building. If the sensors are relocated, then the application automatically reconfigures itself in the light of the new routing topology. WSNs are event‐based systems that rely on the collective effort of several micro‐sensor nodes, which are continuously observing a physical phenomenon. WSN applications require spatially dense sensor deployment in order to achieve satisfactory coverage. The degree of spatial correlation increases with the decreasing inter‐node separation. Energy consumption is reduced dramatically by having only those sensor nodes with unique readings transmit their data. We report on an algorithm based on a spatial correlation technique that assures high QoS (in terms of SNR) of the network as well as proper utilization of energy, by suppressing redundant data transmission. Because of their inherent advantages, Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) are extremely useful for dealing with geographically referenced information. In the study of epidemics, most data are geographically referenced, which makes GIS and RS the perfect even necessary tools for processing, analysis, representation of epidemic data. Comprehensively considering the data requirements in the study of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) coupled with the quality of the existing remotely sensed data in terms of the resolution of space, time and spectra, the data sensed by MODIS are chosen and the relevant methods and procedures of data processing from RS and GIS for some environmental factors are proposed. Through using spatial analysis functions and Exploratory Spatial data analysis (ESDA) of GIS, some results of relationship between HPAI occurrences and these potential factors are presented. The role played by bird migration is also preliminarily illustrated with some operations such as visualization, overlapping etc. provided by GIS. Through the work of this paper, we conclude: Firstly, the migration of birds causes the spread of HPAI all over the country in 2004-2005. Secondly, the migration of birds is the reason why the spread of HPAI is perturbed. That is, for some classic communicable diseases, their spread exhibits obvious spatial diffusion process. However, the spread of HPAI breaks this general rule. We think leap diffusion and time lag are the probable reasons for this kind of phenomena. Potential distribution of HPAI viruses (corresponding to the distribution of flyways and putative risk sources) is not completely consistent with the occurrences of HPAI. For this phenomenon, we think, in addition to the flyways of birds, all kinds of geographical, climatic factors also have important effect on the occurrences of HPAI. Through the case study of HPAI, we can see that GIS and RS can play very important roles in the study of epidemics.

NodeTrix: A hybrid visualization of social networks

The need to visualize large social networks is growing as hardware capabilities make analyzing large networks feasible and many new data sets become available. Unfortunately, the visualizations in existing systems do not satisfactorily resolve the basic dilemma of being readable both for the global structure of the network and also for detailed analysis of local communities. To address this problem, we present NodeTrix, a hybrid representation for networks that combines the advantages of two traditional representations: node-link diagrams are used to show the global structure of a network, while arbitrary portions of the network can be shown as adjacency matrices to better support the analysis of communities. A key contribution is a set of interaction techniques. These allow analysts to create a NodeTrix visualization by dragging selections to and from node-link and matrix forms, and to flexibly manipulate the NocleTrix representation to explore the dataset and create meaningful summary visualizations of their findings. Finally, we present a case study applying NodeTrix to the analysis of the InfoVis 2004 coauthorship clataset to illustrate the capabilities of NocleTrix as both an exploration tool and an effective means of communicating results.

GMOSS (Global Monitoring for security and stability) is a Network of Excellence (NoE) in the Aeronautics and Space priority of the 6th Framework Program of the European Union lasting from 2004 to 2008. Being part of the "Global Monitoring of Environment and Security" (GMES) program, GMOSS aimed to integrate the European civil security research while assembling a critical mass of resources, activities, and expertise needed to ensure a durable integration of the participants' capacities for global monitoring using satellite earth observation. The activities carried out during these fours years were threefold: integrating activities, implementing a joint research program, and spreading of excellence. This paper summarizes these activities. The security issues considered by GMOSS are first presented. The GMOSS consortium is then described. In the next sections, the focus is successively put on GMOSS Test Cases, real-time exercises, training activities and Gender Action Program.

Learning Management Systems (LMSs) store different kinds of e-learning related data, whose analysis is important for monitoring students' learning processes and for helping detection of potential problems on these processes. Different researches apply Information visualization concepts and techniques for graphically and interactively presenting LMS data for analysis. Nonetheless, these researches show data obtained by predefined database queries, which fit only specific analysis situations, in despite of unforeseen situations derived from final user's knowledge about e-learning domain. Taking into account these situations, this paper presents a solution that enable LMS users to define database attributes they want to analyze, without need to know the internal organization of LMS database. Selected attributes are treated as a universal relation query and, after executed, query results are automatically converted into interactive graphical representations, avoiding user's concern with selecting the more adequate chart.
