The task of navigating large unstructured collections of documents to find information that is relevant, related, or connected to a topic can be very difficult. At the National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education (NITLE) we develop tools that use statistical analysis to correlate similar documents and to facilitate the exploration and discovery of connections between them. Information visualization is a growing and relevant field. data-driven visualization graphics created with the SVG format can interact robustly with the surrounding web-based environment, have the power of a built-in programming language, and can dynamically update themselves over a network. These abilities allow rich visualizations of content to not only be created on the fly, but navigated on the fly as well. The ability of an SVG image to interact with the underlying systems it represents makes it a very powerful solution for content and relationship visualization.

Sustainable forest management requires new tools to analyze spatial and temporal forest dynamics and to examine those forest parameters that are related to sustainability. We built a prototype system for dataanalysis and decision-making at forest enterprise level by integrating a forest ecosystem model EFIMOD-PRO, (long-term prediction of forest growth and soil development) with an interactive visualization system CommonGIS for analysis of spatially and temporally related data. Using the prototype, a case study in Central European Russia simulated four silvicultural regimes over 200 years: natural development, selective forestry, legal forestry according to the Russian forestry legislation, and illegal forest practice. Exploratory analysis of the simulation results demonstrated that (1) natural stand development is the best alternative for carbon sequestration;(2) legal forest management is the best regime for timber production;(3). selective forestry combines the advantages of two previous strategies, and can be the best strategy for implementing sustainable forest management;and (4) illegal forest practices lead to a fast decrease in forest productivity and decreasing biodiversity. Interactive and dynamic visualizations With maps and statistical graphics played a crucial role in data cleaning, model validation, and analysis of simulation results. The case study demonstrated the potential of integrating forest ecosystem models with exploratory datavisualization for the analysis and expert evaluation at the local level. The prototype can be used to present ecological and silvicultural consequences of various management practices to stakeholders and differing social groups, thus stimulating effective decision-making for sustainable forestry. Interval volume serves as a generalized isosurface and represents a three-dimensional subvolume for which the associated scalar filed values lie within a user-specified closed interval. In general, it is not an easy task for novices to specify the scalar field interval corresponding to their ROIs. In order to extract interval volumes from which desirable geometric features can be mined effectively, we propose a, suggestive technique which extracts interval volumes automatically based on the global examination of the field contrast structure. Also proposed here is a simplification scheme for decimating resultant triangle patches to realize efficient transmission and rendition of large-scale Interval volumes. Color distributions as well as geometric features are taken into account to select best edges to be collapsed. In addition, when a user wants to selectively display and analyze the original dataset, the simplified dataset is restructured to the original quality. Several simulated and acquired datasets are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the present methods.

An interesting area of study has been developing technologies to assist knowledge discovery with the human in the loop. It has been our experience that humans are adept at discovering patterns and anomalies, while automated systems are preferred for managing the found anomalies. It has also been our view that tools intrinsically limit the questions that can be asked, and therefore limit what can be understood about data. A particular niche we have investigated is the detection of societal behaviors, or ripples, in response to external events. The goal is to detect ripples as surrogates for the underlying event. A societal ripple is a change in personal activities or transactions. These ripples may be found in many data streams including retail transactions and communications. We have developed a data fusion, analysis and visualization prototype internally named SWIFT. This technology provides a data agnostic platform that can fuse multiple real-time data streams, provide connectivity to analysis capabilities and view current and historical animations of selected data dimensions. By applying this technology we can observe how society reacts to certain events and how behaviors differ between various events. By enabling interactive investigation of anomalies with a 100% sampling of data, we have discovered many hidden anomalies that are beneath the "radar screen".

Finding egdes in textured images is a very difficult task. An extension to the well-known Hough Transform for finding straight lines in images is given in this paper. Instead of suppressing useful edge information in the preceeding edge detector, the raw edge data is used in the Hough transformation directly. This approach clearly outperforms the classical one in highly textured and rich contrast images.

Social network analysis (SNA) is a set of numerous techniques, methods and tools for discovering patterns in social structures. Using the Tight measurement allows us to address the problem with other traditional disciplines, giving us the possibility to analyze it with well-known data raining ideas and even with the fundamental graph theory methods. Motivated by the goal of measuring and visualizing the essential property of social networks - power - we present an efficient method for visual clustering in SNA as a frequent closed itemset mining and a graph crossing minimization task. The theoretical claims are supported by the results of a prima facie set of experiments, based on a real-life email dataset, which was made public during the legal investigation concerning Enron corporation.
