The new generation of massively parallel mainframes enabled computational physics to make a quantum leap in complexity and size of numerical simulations, especially in the domain of astrophysics. The COAST project at CEA/IRFU at Saclay, started in 2005, involves astrophysicists and software engineers developing simulation codes in magneto-hydrodynamics and generic tools for data structuration and visualization. A dedicated software for visualizing the massive amounts of data produced by these simulation codes has been developed, the SDvision code, deployed in the framework of IDL Object Graphics. This code is suitable for interactive and immersive navigation for the analysis of 3D results and also for videos and stereoscopic movies productions for people at large. In this paper, we present the capabilities of the code SDvision and some applications in the domain of astrophysics simulations but also in the domain of fusion plasmas studies. In particular, two challenging simulations have been performed in the framework of the 'Grands Defis GENCI/CINES' on recent supercomputer Jade in CINES in 2010 and we present the visualization studies for such huge computation results.

Knowledge base system is one of the most future branches for artificial intelligence facing with practical application. But the reasoning process of system is invisible, not visual and users cannot intervene the reasoning process, therefore for users the system is only a black box. This condition causes many users to take a suspicious attitude to the conclusions analyzing and drawing from the system, that means even though the system has the explanation function, but it is still not far enough. If we adopt graph or image technique to display this reasoning procedure interactively and dynamically which can make this procedure be visual, users can intervene the reasoning procedure which can greatly reduce users' gain giving, and at the same time it can provide a given method for integrity check to knowledge of the knowledge base. Therefore, we can say that reasoning visualization of knowledge base system has a further meaning than general visualization. In this paper the visual problem of reasoning process for knowledge base system on the basis of the formalized analysis for ICON system, Icon operation, syntax and semanteme of the statement is presented, a reasoning model of knowledge base system that has a visual characteristics is established, the model is used to do an integrity check in practical expert system and knowledge base, better effect is got.

This paper proposes a new cooperatie system environment for design, construction and maintenance of civil structures, especially bridges. We identified seven tools required to improve the productivity of design, construction and maintenance of bridges, They are product models, visualization system, communication tool, task systems with agents, database system, radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, and data reuse facility. These tools are to be integrated and used by owners, design consultants, contractors, manufacturers, etc., who can exchange and share structural, construction and inspection data, information and knowledge with this system.

Modern tools for visualization of information can be very helpful for dataanalysis and discovery of patterns in data. The paper describes a framework for documenting of findings using freehand drawings on top of the displays representing data. These drawings or marks become a basis for the annotations of the analyzed information. The marks are used to designate patterns in data and to refer to data elements with interesting characteristics. A model of datavisualization is described that allows encoding of marks in terms of the presented information. This brings independence of marks from the specifics of visualizing methods - the marks are adapted according to changes of the way the data is presented Such representation of marks also gives the possibility for the system to provide the user with information and statistics about the data referred by marks and to initiate visualizations showing the referred data in other perspectives.

A visualization and steering application, GAVis, has been developed to aid in understanding the behavior of and guiding the convergence of genetic algorithms running in parallel over long time periods. When classification techniques such as Support Vector Machines (SVMs) paired with complete leave-one-out validation are used as a fitness function for identification of markers inomic data, the time to complete one generation can exceed an hour on modern high-performance computing clusters. Separate solution populations on "islands" can help maintain a more diverse solution space and conveniently map to compute nodes on a cluster. Adjustments can be made at runtime to speed the convergence of genetic algorithms by stimulating lagging island populations with migrations of high-performing individuals or by selectively increasing mutation rates.

Mining is a complicated operation. There are many fields involved in mining ranging from exploration, engineering operations to environmental aspects. With the advancement of information technologies and mining industry operating techniques, the success of a mining operation is largely dependent on a group's ability to collect, manage, integrate, utilize available data sets and information, and draw the right conclusions. With the establishment of the world's first mine site virtual reality (VR) studio at Goldcorp's Red Lake Mine, the comprehensive data integration and immersive 3D datavisualization have been completed at the mine. The advantages of this type of data processing have been well demonstrated and the initial benefits are significant. This paper presents the mine data integration and comprehensive datavisualization at the Red Lake Mine by using a powerful, state-of-the-art technology - virtual reality. It reveals that the VR studio is not only a tool for visualizing mine information to help geologists/engineers view and understand mine engineering data, but it is also a powerful tool for mine data integration, modeling and analysis of disparate but available information. These allow professionals from different departments or disciplines to discuss, coordinate and optimize their plans and designs. VR allows mine operations to instantly see the financial impact of their decisions on mine safety, environment, direction of exploration drillholes, ore grade and excavation rates, mine plans, ground control methods, stress and seismicity, physical placement of stopes, ramps and other structures, as well as infrastructure, and engineering and human resources scheduling. The strategies for data integration and the datavisualization VR operating framework are discussed in this paper. Examples are also given to show the power resulting from data integration and the power of VR on engineering applications.

This paper discusses the ongoing efforts on development of a Decentralized data Fusion (DDF) simulator for analysis and design of a distributed fusion-based tracking system. We have identified the requirements for a DDF simulator and have developed a fully interactive, graphical user interface based scenario generation tool called SceneGen (Srimath-veeravalli, Subramanian and Kesavadas 2004) for creating battlefield scenarios, and a simulation tool called VizSim for running various DDF algorithms on scenarios created in SceneGen and displaying the simulation results in an easy to understand fashion. SceneGen and VizSim has been designed with a full compliment of user utilities, including an efficient terrain database generation module, a sensor report generation module and the database connectivity to store and retrieve scenarios and simulation results. The innovative visualization techniques used in the simulator helps in displaying the data in a fashion that transfers maximum information to a user. Both SceneGen and VizSim have been tested successfully for running scenarios consisting of a large number of entities.

There has been much work recently in the classification of interstitial lung disease from CT scans using texture analysis. The process generally involves one or more radiologists labelling regions of the lung parenchyma as representative of a particular condition. The character of these regions falls broadly into two groups: those which the radiologists present and, it is supposed, all others would agree are highly representative of a particular pattern;and the regions which, although deemed to belong to the class in question, are not necessarily perfect examples and need not possess an homogeneous texture throughout. In short, the data can be clean or contain noise. There are circumstances in which information from only one of these categories may be available and it may be necessary to train a machine learning algorithm and classify regions which belong to the other type or are of unknown origin. Here we evaluate the decrease in accuracy associated with such incomplete information using a number of common classifiers.
