We have developed semi-automated and fully-automated tools for the analysis of 3D single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images. The focus is on the efficient boundary delineation of complex 3D structures that enables accurate measurement of their structural and physiologic properties. We employ intensity based thresholding algorithms for interactive and semi-automated analysis. We also explore fuzzy-connectedness concepts for fully automating the segmentation process. We apply the proposed tools to SPECT image data capturing variation of gastric accommodation and emptying. These image analysis tools were developed within the framework of a noninvasive scintigraphic test to measure simultaneously both gastric emptying and gastric volume after ingestion of a solid or a liquid meal. The clinical focus of the particular analysis was to probe associations between gastric accommodation/emptying and functional dyspepsia. Employing the proposed tools, we outline effectively the complex three dimensional gastric boundaries shown in the 3D SPECT images. We also perform accurate volume calculations in order to quantitatively assess the gastric mass variation. This analysis was performed both with the semi-automated and fully-automated tools. The results were validated against manual segmentation performed by a human expert. We believe that the development of an automated segmentation tool for SPECT imaging of the gastric volume variability will allow for other new applications of SPECT imaging where there is a need to evaluate complex organ function or tumor masses.

CytometryML is a proposed new Analytical Cytology (Cytomics) data standard, which is based on a common set of XML schemas for encoding flow cytometry and digital microscopy text based data types (metadata). CytometryML schemas reference both DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) codes and FCS keywords. Flow Cytometry Standard (FCS) list-mode has been mapped to the DICOM Waveform Information Object. The separation of the large binary data objects (list mode and image data) from the XML description of the metadata permits the metadata to be directly displayed, analyzed, and reported with standard commercial software packages;the direct use of XML languages;and direct interfacing with clinical information systems. The separation of the binary data into its own files simplifies parsing because all extraneous header data has been eliminated. The storage of images as two-dimensional arrays without any extraneous data, such as in the Adobe (R) Photoshop (R) RAW format, facilitates the development by scientists of their own analysis and visualization software. Adobe Photoshop provided the display infrastructure and the translation facility to interconvert between the image data from commercial formats and RAW format. Similarly, the storage and parsing of list mode binary data type with a group of parameters that are specified at compilation time is straight forward. However when the user is permitted at run-time to select a subset of the parameters and/or specify results of mathematical manipulations, the development of special software was required. The use of CytometryML will permit investigators to be able to create their own interoperable data analysis software and to employ commercially available software to disseminate their data.

Automated spoken dialog systems require systematic procedures for evaluating performance and diagnosing problems. We present an interactive tool that provides graphical views of how callers navigate through such systems, enabling fine-grained analysis for system evaluation and business intelligence. The input is a feed of call-logs. The output is an empirical dialog trajectory analysis represented as stochastic finite state machines, accessible via the web. Complexity is managed by an automatic tokenization procedure that hides fine details until needed. Users can generate selective views of parts of the dialog at high resolution (with access to call data), or zoom out to a summary. The tool provides dialog system developers with all the information they need from a single source, and is in use with directed-dialog and natural-language applications.

While lung anatomy is well understood, pulmonary structure-to-function relationships such as the complex elastic deformation of the lung during respiration are less well documented. Current methods for studying lung anatomy include conventional chest radiography, high-resolution computed tomography (CT scan) and magnetic resonance imaging with polarized gases (MRI scan). Pulmonary physiology can be studied using spirometry or V/Q nuclear medicine tests (V/Q scan). V/Q scanning and MRI scans may demonstrate global and regional function. However, each of these individual imaging methods lacks the ability to provide high-resolution anatomic detail, associated pulmonary mechanics and functional variability of the entire respiratory cycle. Specifically, spirometry provides only a one-dimensional gross estimate of pulmonary function, and V/Q scans have poor spatial resolution, reducing its potential for regional assessment of structure-to-function relationships. We have developed a method which utilizes standard clinical CT scanning to provide data for computation of dynamic anatomic parametric models of the lung during respiration which correlates high-resolution anatomy to underlying physiology. The lungs are segmented from both inspiration and expiration three-dimensional (31)) data sets and transformed into a geometric description of the surface of the lung. Parametric mapping of lung surface deformation then provides a visual and quantitative description of the mechanical properties of the lung. Any alteration in lung mechanics is manifest by alterations in normal deformation of the lung wall. The method produces a high-resolution anatomic and functional composite picture from sparse temporal-spatial methods which quantitatively illustrates detailed anatomic structure to pulmonary function relationships impossible for translational methods to provide.

The amount of per-patient image data generated by medical imaging modalities such as MRI and multi-slice CT scanners increases rapidly. This is on one hand due to an increasing spatial image resolution and on the other hand due to the expanding use of multi-phase or cine studies. A cardiac multi-phase CT scan, generated in about 20 seconds scan time, easily generates about 2GB of image data. The visualization and further processing of those data is at the edge of the abilities of current computers. We therefore present a principal component analysis (PCA) based compression algorithm, which exploits the spatial and temporal coherence of medical multi-phase image data and which allows to retrieve the images with a selectable amount of information loss. The main focus of this work is to reduce the required amount of system memory, not to reduce the required amount of disk space, i.e. at any time only the decomposed image resides in the system memory. If an intensity value for a position (x,y,z,t) is required, it is calculated on demand. This is possible, since the intensity values are expressed as fast computable weighted sums. The method has been applied to cardiac multi-phase CT datasets. It could be shown that a compression ratio of 3:1 still keeps the compression-induced losses (mainly blurring) at the noise level of the original data (about 5 Hounsfield units). Compression ratios of 5:1 and more can be achieved keeping an undisturbed visual impression of the dataset. The influence of the image compression on an automated cardiac segmentation procedure has been studied. Compression ratios up to 8:1 lead to results that only marginally deviate from results of the uncompressed image.

Image encryption is a key technology for protecting image confidentiality and integrity in various applications. However, there is a lack of comprehensive and quantitative overview of the relevant publications in this field. This paper aims to fill this gap and explore the evolution and research frontier of image encryption. We collected papers from the WOS core database from 2005 to 2022 and used R programming language and VOSviewer to conduct bibliometric analysis and visualization. We analyzed the annual output, publication countries and institutions, journal sources, authors, and influential papers. We also visualized the author relationship, institutional cooperation relationship, keyword co-occurrence network, etc. We identified the research hotspots as: 1) chaotic systems;2) optical encryption;3) reversible information hiding;4) deep learning;5) visual encryption;6) quantum image encryption. We found that: 1) the literature volume shows an overall upward trend;2) China has a leading position and close cooperationwith many countries;3) quantum image encryption and deep learning image encryption are emerging topics with large development space. This paper provides valuable references for researchers and practitioners in the area of image encryption.

Content-based image classification is a wide research field addressing the problem of categorizing images according to their content. A common way to approach content-based classification is through learning from examples - a given class of images is described by means of a suitable training set of data. The main drawback of this approach is the fact that collecting data to build homogeneous training and validation sets is a boring and time consuming task. even if the Web can help providing a potentially inexhaustible source of images. In this paper we present a system to automatically download images from the Web and a selection of techniques useful to prune the images downloaded according to some criteria. These techniques work as filters at various degrees of complexity: some are simple measurements other are image classifiers themselves. We focus on two critical ones (monochrome vs color images and photos vs graphics) showing their effectiveness on a manually labeled validation set of data. We conclude the paper analyzing the overall performance of the system with an a posteriori analysis of the results obtained in a few run.

Lake monitoring surveys data are vital and have been being accumulated for every lake. However data itself, without effective data management and interpretation, cannot be used to tell the story or history of the lake. Therefore, this project aims to develop a new water quality database system for a lake with systematical functions to utilize such data effectively and to satisfy both general public users and specialists. Lake Biwa was chosen as the target lake, where long-term monitoring data were available for almost one hundred years. A relational database application, Access 2002, with the help of Macro functions and VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) was introduced to organize all of the data. With the systematical storing of data, valuable data could be easily accessed, filtered and powerfully utilized for researchers own interests. The filtered data can be written into basic documents (spreadsheet or text files), provided for outside requests, and again used for further basic and advanced analysis by a reading back process. The system supports multiple users, especially public users by providing user interface system and visualized result displays. The final outcomes from this systematic data utilization can be fruitfully used as the guideline for effective monitoring management program of lake water quality.
