We present a higher-order approach to the extraction of isosurfaces from unstructured meshes. Existing methods use linear interpolation along each mesh edge to find isosurface intersections. In contrast, our method determines intersections by performing barycentric interpolation over diamonds formed by the tetrahedra incident to each edge. Our method produces smoother, more accurate isosurfaces. Additionally, interpolating over diamonds, rather than linearly interpolating edge endpoints. enables us to identify up to two isosurface intersections per edge. This paper details how our new technique extracts isopoints, and presents a simple connection strategy for forming a triangle mesh isosurface.

Bioinformatics systems benefit from the use of data mining strategies to locate interesting and pertinent relationships within massive information. For example, data mining methods can ascertain and summarize the set of genes responding to a certain level of stress in an organism. Even a cursory glance through the literature in journals, reveals the persistent role of data mining in experimental biology. Integrating data mining within the context of experimental investigations is central to bioinformatics software. In this paper we describe the framework of probabilistic principal surfaces, a latent variable model which offers a large variety of appealing visualization capabilities and which can be successfully integrated in the context of microarray analysis. A preprocessing phase consisting of a nonlinear PCA neural network which seems to be very useful to deal with noisy and time dependent nature of microarray data has been added to this framework.

The fear of road accidents is a widespread phenomenon. The families of those involved in fatal road accidents suffer emotionally, psychologically and financially. Increased population increases need for transportation. This resulted in the rise in personal vehicles to make individual journeys comfortable. The increase in private vehicles made road travel more congested. All these circumstances led to an increase in accidents. Accidents can be small in nature, resulting in minor injuries, or serious in nature, resulting in fatalities. The research presented performs critical analyses on road accident data. This analyses helps in tracking critical segments that trigger a road accident. Various reasons may pertain to an accident like day of the week, time of the day, weather conditions, road conditions, driver faults or negligence. To highlight the main reasons behind accident severity the road accident data of 2005–2014 is considered. Pre-processing techniques like removing noisy data, filling in missing values and attribute selection methods are applied on the dataset to smoothen the data. The data under major categories is visualised using Tableau to find the different hidden patterns existed among the data. The identified conclusions help in decreasing the count and severity of accidents making road travel safer. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

As medical imaging applications become more complex, the design of software platforms for medical imaging is getting greater priority. With this demand, we have designed and implemented a novel software platform for medical data visualization in traditional object-oriented fashion with some common design patterns. This platform integrates the mainstream medical data reconstruction and visualization algorithms and 3D human-computer interaction based on 3D widgets into a consistent framework. The design goals, the overall framework and the implementation of some key technologies are addressed in details, and some application examples are also given to demonstrate the abilities of this platform. The ultimate objective is to provide a flexible, reliable and extensible 3D medical data visualization platform for the medical imaging society.

Exploring scale-dependent correlations between cancer mortality rates using factorial kriging and population-weighted semivariograms

This article presents a geostatistical methodology that accounts for spatially varying population size in the processing of cancer mortality data. The approach proceeds in two steps: (1) spatial patterns are first described and modeled using population-weighted semivariogram estimators, (2) spatial components corresponding to nested structures identified on sernivariograms are then estimated and mapped using a variant of factorial kriging. The main benefit over traditional spatial smoothers is that the pattern of spatial variability (i.e., direction -dependent variability, range of correlation, presence of nested scales of variability) is directly incorporated into the computation of weights assigned to surrounding observations. Moreover, besides filtering the noise in the data, the procedure allows the decomposition of the structured component into several spatial components (i.e., local versus regional variability) on the basis of semivariogram models. A simulation study demonstrates that maps of spatial components are closer to the underlying risk maps in terms of prediction errors and provide a better visualization of regional patterns than the original maps of mortality rates or the maps smoothed using weighted linear averages. The proposed approach also attenuates the underestimation of the magnitude of the correlation between various cancer rates resulting from noise attached to the data. This methodology has great potential to explore scale-dependent correlation between risks of developing cancers and to detect clusters at various spatial scales, which should lead to a more accurate representation of geographic variation in cancer risk, and ultimately to a better understanding of causative relationships.

In this paper, the author illustrates some of the key challenges for knowledge visualization in corporate communication. Based on a case study from Edward Tufte and an evolutionary account of Mihai Nadin, the author argues that interactivity is an essential issue with regard to organizational communication or knowledge media design in general. Finally, he presents an example that comes from a recent DaimlerChrysler research project. This project used an interactive visualization to support the communication between several different management levels and professional backgrounds.

analysis of phenomena that simultaneously occur on different spatial and temporal scales requires adaptive, hierarchical schemes to reduce computational and storage demands. Adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) schemes support both refinement in space that results in a time-dependent grid topology, as well as refinement in time that results in updates at higher rates for refined levels. visualization of AMR data requires generating data for absent refinement levels at specific time steps. We describe a solution starting from a given set of "key frames" with potentially different grid topologies. The presented work was developed in a project involving several research institutes that collaborate in the field of cosmology and numerical relativity. AMR data results from simulations that are run on dedicated compute machines and is thus stored centrally, whereas the analysis of the data is performed on the local computers of the scientists. We built a distributed solution using remote procedure calls (RPC). To keep the application responsive, we split the bulk data transfer from the RPC response and deliver it asynchronously as a binary stream. The number of network round-trips is minimized by using high level operations. In summary, we provide an application for exploratory visualization of remotely stored AMR data.

SunDiesel™ is an alternative bio-fuel derived from wood chips that has certain properties that are superior to those of conventional diesel (D2). In this investigation, 100% SunDiesel was tested in a Mercedes A-Class (model year 1999), 1.7L, turbocharged, direct-injection diesel engine (EURO II) equipped with a common-rail injection system. By using an endoscope system, Argonne researchers collected in-cylinder visualization data to compare the engine combustion characteristics of the SunDiesel with those of D2. Measurements were made at one engine speed and load condition (2,500 rpm, 50% load) and four start-of-injection (SOI) points, because of a limited source of SunDiesel fuel. Significant differences in soot concentration, as measured by two-color optical pyrometry, were observed. The optical and cylinder pressure data clearly show significant differences in combustion duration and ignition delay between the two fuels. Scanning mobility particle size (SMPS) measurements showed that the SunDiesel fuel produced significantly lower amounts of engine-out soot. Concentrations of specific oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO) were also reduced when the SunDiesel was used. The fuel contains significantly lower levels of aromatics and sulfur compared with D2, which likely contributes to the lower particulate matter concentrations. The reduction in specific NOx is most likely the result of an increase in power at each test condition, due to the higher heat of combustion. Copyright © 2005 SAE International.

This paper describes the ideas and developments of the project EP-CACHE. Within this project new methods and tools are developed to improve the analysis and the optimization of programs for cache architectures, especially for SMP clusters. The tool set comprises the semi-automatic instrumentation of user programs, the monitoring of the cache behavior, the visualization of the measured data, and optimization techniques for improving the user program for better cache usage. As current hardware performance counters do not give sufficient user relevant information, new hardware monitors are designed that provide more detailed information about the cache utilization related to the data structures and code blocks in the user program. The expense of the hardware and software realization will be assessed to minimize the risk of a real implementation of the investigated monitors.
