Significant advances have been made to nonintrusive flow field diagnostics in the past decade. Camera based techniques are now capable of determining physical qualities such as surface deformation, surface pressure and temperature, flow velocities, and molecular species concentration. In each case, extracting the pertinent information from the large volume of acquired data requires powerful and efficient datavisualization tools. The additional requirement for real time visualization is fueled by an increased emphasis on minimizing test time in expensive facilities. This paper addresses a capability titled LiveView3D, which is the first step in the development phase of an in depth, real time datavisualization and analysis tool for use in aerospace testing facilities

A set of user evaluation studies were performed to test hypotheses about the efficacy and value of the use of sonification by itself and together with visualization to improve the process of interactive data exploration. Our results show that, in some cases, sonification yielded more accurate analysis results than visualization, and when combined with visualization, yield much better results than either one (visualization or sonification) yielded separately. That supports sonification as a valuable and promising tool that should be further studied as a complement to visualization systems.

A useful data mining not only be efficient, but also be effective. For data mining algorithms, especially for classification, cluster analysis, decision tree, etc., an interactive processing between machine and user is necessary. Applying parallel and distributed computing technology, the object of efficient data mining can be reached. Together with parallel visualization platform, an interactive interface is essential in interactive data mining. In this paper, a scheme of interactive data mining support system in parallel computing environment is described. The design of interface in the system is illustrated.

An interesting area of study has been developing technologies to assist knowledge discovery with the human in the loop. It has been our experience that humans are adept at discovering patterns and anomalies, while automated systems are preferred for managing the found anomalies. It has also been our view that tools intrinsically limit the questions that can be asked, and therefore limit what can be understood about data. A particular niche we have investigated is the detection of societal behaviors, or ripples, in response to external events. The goal is to detect ripples as surrogates for the underlying event. A societal ripple is a change in personal activities or transactions. These ripples may be found in many data streams including retail transactions and communications. We have developed a data fusion, analysis and visualization prototype internally named SWIFT. This technology provides a data agnostic platform that can fuse multiple real-time data streams, provide connectivity to analysis capabilities and view current and historical animations of selected data dimensions. By applying this technology we can observe how society reacts to certain events and how behaviors differ between various events. By enabling interactive investigation of anomalies with a 100% sampling of data, we have discovered many hidden anomalies that are beneath the "radar screen"

Over the past five years the potential utility for 3-D laser radar (LIDAR) to support urban warfare initiatives has grown rapidly. Currently, every major U.S. defense agency, Supporting geo-spatial analysis and urban warfare, is now actively using or investigating the potential for high-resolution 3-D LIDAR terrain in future operations. Airborne LIDAR data are now commonly collected with an average spatial posting of I meter to 5 cm. The Joint Programs, Sustainment and Development Project Office (JPSD-PO) has contributed significantly to the rapid collection of high-resolution urban terrain using LIDAR sensor technology. JPSD has collected LIDAR data in Support of Department of Defense activities throughout the world. Currently, the Urban Recon ACTD is creating the next generation LIDAR sensors for use in tactical environments. Advancements in flash LIDAR data collection and the integration of a complete LIDAR sensor under the Urban Recon ACTD will be examined.

The analysis of mass spectrometry proteomics data requires the combination of large storage systems, effective preprocessing techniques, and data mining and visualization tools. The collection, storage and analysis of huge mass spectra produced in different laboratories can leverage the services of computational grids, that offer efficient data transfer primitives, effective management of large data stores, and large computing power. The paper presents a software platform that uses ontologies and workflows to combine spectra preprocessing tools, efficient spectra management techniques, and off-the-shelf data mining tools to analyze proteomics data on the grid. Architecture and performance evaluation are presented.

We introduce the new nonlinear dimension reduction method: LTSA, in dealing with the difficulty of analyzing high-dimensional, nonlinear microarray data. Firstly, we analyze the applicability of the method and we propose the reconstruction error of LTSA. The method is tested on Iris data set and acute leukemias microarray data. The results show good visualization performance. And LTSA outperforms PCA on determining the reduced dimension. There is only subtle change in the clustering correctness after dimension reduction by LTSA. It is evident that application of nonlinear dimension reduction techniques could have a promising perspective in microarray dataanalysis.

This paper describes the ideas and developments of the project EP-CACHE. Within this project new methods and tools are developed to improve the analysis and the optimization of programs for cache architectures, especially for SMP clusters. The tool set comprises the semi-automatic instrumentation of user programs, the monitoring of the cache behavior, the visualization of the measured data, and optimization techniques for improving the user program for better cache usage. As current hardware performance counters do not give sufficient user relevant information, new hardware monitors are designed that provide more detailed information about the cache utilization related to the data structures and code blocks in the user program. The expense of the hardware and software realization will be assessed to minimize the risk of a real implementation of the investigated monitors. The usefulness of the hardware monitors is evaluated by a cache simulator. (c) 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.
