data mining algorithms usually generate a large number of rules, which may not always be useful to human users. In this project, we propose a novel visual data-mining framework, called Opportunity Map, to identify useful and actionable knowledge quickly and easily from the discovered rules. The framework is inspired by the House of Quality from Quality Function Deployment (QFD) in Quality Engineering. It associates discovered rules, related summarized data and data distributions with the application objective using an interactive matrix. Combined with drill down visualization, integrated visualization of data distribution bars and rules, visualization of trend behaviors, and comparative analysis, the Opportunity Map allows users to analyze rules and data at different levels of detail and quickly identify the actionable knowledge and opportunities. The proposed framework represents a systematic and flexible approach to rule analysis. Applications of the system to large-scale data sets from our industrial partner have yielded promising results.

Citation analysis has been applied in various contexts for different purposes such as impact factors estimation, co-citation pattern analysis, community partitioning, and knowledge visualization etc. We employed graph theory and authoritative sources identification techniques, augmented with visualization tools to discover critical research focuses from the citation graph. The citation graph was built from data retrieved from the CiteSeer database via a querying robot. Two experiments were carried out to identify important research focuses from the citation graph with promising results. Established research focuses as well as new research focuses were successfully identified by the method we proposed and tried. Researchers new to a field may use this method to locate important literature in various fields, which in turn facilitates their learning and studying.

This paper describes an effective technique of wavelet transform for optical signal processing on-line. The method of optical signal real-time analysis has been applied to giving information about transparent structures on morphology. Our approach consists of application of wavelet transform function within levels of multi-resolution representation to process the optical signal. Our study utilizes a one-dimensional wavelet to delete noise from the original optical signal and estimate the variation trend of maximum intensity of scattered light from wavelet decomposition coefficients. An exceptional optical signal also can be accurately detected by wavelet decomposition. visualization is performed via a high performance analysis software which allows real-time data acquisition and processing of the optical signal. The famous orthogonality, compact support and approximate symmetry wavelet transform, Symlets wavelet family, is used to decompose the optical signal. Experimental result demonstrates the effectiveness of optical signal analysis by wavelet transform.

Time-tunnel proposed by Akaishi et al. is a multidimensional data analysis tool. Time-tunnel visualizes any number of time series numerical data records as individual charts each of which is displayed on an individual rectangular plane called data-wing in a 3D virtual space. Through direct manipulations on a computer screen, the user easily puts more than two data-wings overlapped together to compare their charts in order to recognize the similarity or the difference among those data records. Simultaneously a radar chart among those data at any time point is displayed to recognize the similarity and the correlation among them. Since only one chart is displayed on one data-wing, so if there is a number of data records, the user has to prepare accordingly a huge number of data-wings and practically it becomes impossible to manipulate them. To deal with this problem, the authors enhanced the functionality of time-tunnel to enable it to display more than two charts on each data-wing. In other word, the authors made each data-wing have the functionality of the parallel coordinates. This paper proposes the usefulness of this enhancement of time-tunnel by showing data analysis examples.

The paper describes a method developed for interactive data visualization and exploration with applications in the automotive industry. The input data set contains a large number of function graphs. Each of the graphs is characterized by a set of basic attributes. The technique that is used for visualization includes two linked views: a map view (or attribute space view), where all function graphs are represented as a point or an icon on the map, and a linked function graph view. The map view provides additional visualization possibilities and allows user interaction. Additional features like brushing in both views, graph management, and related issues like interpolation of the graphs are described.

Traditionally, time-varying data has been visualized using snapshots of the individual time steps or an animation of the snapshots shown in a sequential manner. For larger datasets with many time-varying features, animation can be limited in its use, as an observer can only track a limited number of features over the last few frames. Visually inspecting each snapshot is not practical either for a large number of time-steps. We propose new techniques inspired from the illustration literature to convey change over time more effectively in a time-varying dataset. Speedlines are used extensively by cartoonists to convey motion, speed, or change over different panels. Flow ribbons are another technique used by cartoonists to depict motion in a single frame. Strobe silhouettes are used to depict previous positions of an object to convey the previous positions of the object to the user. These illustration-inspired techniques can be used in conjunction with animation to convey change over time.

One of the most important problems with rule induction methods is that it is very difficult for domain experts to check millions of rules generated from large datasets. The discovery from these rules requires deep interpretation from domain knowledge. Although several solutions have been proposed in the studies on data mining and knowledge discovery, these studies are not focused on similarities between rules obtained. When one rule r/sub 1/ has reasonable features and the other rule r/sub 2/ with high similarity to r/sub 1/ includes unexpected factors, the relations between these rules will become a trigger to the discovery of knowledge. In this paper, we propose a visualization approach to show the similarity relations between rules based on multidimensional scaling, which assign a two-dimensional cartesian coordinate to each data point from the information about similarities between this data and others data. We evaluated this method on two medical data sets, whose experimental results show that knowledge useful for domain experts could be found.

The visual analysis of time dependent data is an essential task in many application fields. However, visualizing large time dependent data collected within a spatial context is still a challenging task. In this paper, we therefore describe an approach for visualizing spatio-temporal data on maps. The approach is based on two commonly used concepts: 3D information visualization and information hiding. These concepts are realized by means of novel embeddings of 3D icons into a map display for representing spatio-temporal data, and an integration of event-based methods for reducing the amount of information to be represented. Our approach is capable of visualizing multiple time dependent attributes on maps, and of emphasizing the characteristics constituted by either linear or cyclic temporal dependencies.

Simulations often generate large amounts of data that require use of SciVis techniques for effective exploration of simulation results. In some cases, like 1D theory of fluid dynamics, conventional SciVis techniques are not very useful. One such example is a simulation of injection systems that is becoming more and more important due to an increasingly restrictive emission regulations. There are many parameters and correlations among them that influence the simulation results. We describe how basic information visualization techniques can help in visualizing, understanding and analyzing this kind of data. The Com Vis tool is developed and used to analyze and explore the data. Com Vis supports multiple linked views and common information visualization displays such as 2D and 3D scatter-plot, histogram, parallel coordinates, pie-chart, etc. A diesel common rail injector with 2/2 way valve is used for a case study. data sets were generated using a commercially available AVL HYDSIM simulation tool for dynamic analysis of hydraulic and hydro-mechanical systems, with the main application area in the simulation of fuel injection systems.
