A new method is introduced for describing, visualizing, and inspecting data spaces. It is based on an adapted version of the Fast Exact Euclidean Distance (FEED) transform. It computes a description of the complete data space based on partial data. Combined with a metric, a true Weighted Distance Map (WDM) can be computed, which can define a probability space. Subsequently, distances between data points can be determined. Using edge detection, borders (or boundaries) between categories (or dusters) of data can be found. Hence, Voronoi diagrams can be created. Moreover, the visualization of such WDMs provides excellent means for data inspection. Several examples illustrate the use of WDMs as well as their efficiency. So, a new, fast, and exact data analysis method has been developed that yields the means for a rich and intuitive method of data inspection.

In the initial stage of sequence analysis, a biologist is first faced with the questions about how to choose the best tool to align sequences of interest and how to analyze and visualize the alignment results, and then with the question about whether unaligned regions produced by the tool are indeed not homologous or are just results due to inappropriate alignment tools or scoring systems used. In this paper, we present a versatile alignment visualization system, called SinicView, (for sequence-aligning innovative and interactive comparison viewer), which allows users to efficiently compare and evaluate assorted alignment results obtained by different tools. SinicView calculates similarity of the alignment outputs under a sliding window using the sum-of-pairs method and provides scoring profiles of each set of aligned sequences. Combined with the annotations information, the user can visually compare alignment results either in graphic scoring profiles or in plain text format of the aligned nucleotides. With SinicView. users can use their own data sequences to compare various alignment tools or scoring systems and select the most suitable one to perform alignment and sequence analysis. Software visualization and algorithm animation have been tackled almost exclusively from the visual point of view, this means representation and control occur through the visual channel. This approach has its limitations. To achieve better comprehension, we deal with multimodal interfaces that include other means of interaction together with those of the standard systems for data visualization and algorithm animation. The notion of specific concept keyboards is introduced. As a consequence, modern information and learning systems for algorithm animation are enhanced in such a way that control and interaction take place through appropriate interfaces designed for the special purpose so that not only sighted but also blind users can navigate within these systems. We provide some examples to show the relevance of this new approach.

Social and economic data are almost paid greatest attention by the country leaders and used to sense the situation of a country. The manner of visualization and data analysis to social and economic data will greatly affects the knowledge detection and information acquisition,so designing a good analysis system would be very necessary. This paper tries to use flash technology to design an online visualization and data analysis system to the social and economic data. By comparisons with the traditional web GIS systems,the system designed by the paper has great priorities in following three aspects: (1) Accelerating the online data analysis speed by changing the common work flow. (2) Enhancing the system interactivity by integrating and associating the spatial map,attribute data and statistics chart. (3) Creating a distribute map for any selected element and generating a time series animation dynamically. The result shows that using flash technology can achieve difficult functions that the traditional GIS software can’t realize.

The field of information visualization offers little methodological guidance to practitioners who seek to design novel systems. Though many sources describe the foundations of the domain, few discuss practical methods for solving visualization problems. One frequently cited guideline to design is the "Visual information-seeking mantra", proposed by Shneiderman in 1996. Although often used to inform the design of information visualization systems, it is unclear what use this has been for visualization designers. We reviewed the current literature that references the mantra, noting what authors have found useful about it and why they cite it. The results indicate a need for empirical validation of the mantra and for a method, such as design patterns, to inform a holistic approach to visualisation design.

An approach for field and source 3D reconstruction visualizing the measured data of 2D magnetic field distributions is reported. A 3D volume of data for visualization of field is created from the 2D slices of locally measured and visualized field distribution at parallel surfaces by transforming each pixel in the 2D slice to its corresponding 3D location using the position, orientation and Green's function. The image of the locally measured field data are visualized and processed. The color source distribution which corresponds to the field source distribution is obtained using the image color model. This reconstruction approach is successfully applied in metallic tubes. The field distribution changes according to respective space locations, shapes, numbers and dimensions of existed defects and cracks in the tube.

Development of a High‐Resolution CT System and 3D data visualization Tools

The need for material characterization covers broad areas including new materials development, failure analysis, biomedical applications and process development and characterization. Length scales of 0.1μ through 500μ are of key importance to if processes are to be understood and a measure of control on those processes achieved. Computed tomography (CT) imaging of objects is increasingly important in that it can provide 3D information nondestructively about the internal features of interest. We present results from a recently developed μCT system based on a 130 kVp microfocus tube, an amorphous Si array detector and a micro‐stepped positioner. At present the highest resolutions available are voxel sizes of 2.5 microns with a field of view of 4 mm. The data volumes are several gigabytes and have 1400×1400×500voxels. Larger fields of view can be obtained at lower resolution. In generating these 3D data sets a number of issues need to be addressed including detector noise and artifacts, transfer of data from systems, efficient reconstruction of the large data sets, visualization of the data and finally, extraction of information from the data. Parallel processing for the CT reconstruction is implemented on a 64 node Linux cluster and provides reconstruction of a 3D volume in 12 minutes. A custom 3D visualization tool implements volume rendering on a PC and provides 3D viewing of the objects. Users have various functions such as histogram lookup table, mapping, region of interest clipping, normalization, and transparency to explore and interrogate the data. Examples from the CT scanning system will be presented.

The paper presents implementations of some classical fundamental algorithms such as sum/product, minimum/maximum, search/sort of an array of numbers based on actor-oriented data structures and actors. The algorithms are written in the Easel programming language. The results are important contributions to the theory and practice of data structures, concurrent algorithms, and actor-oriented programming. The use of actors can revolutionize current approaches to the mentioned disciplines.

Existing medical visualization platforms share common features such as user extensibility, a graphical user interface to construct network of computational modules and interaction with the application execution. However, all of these platforms oversee the communication problem between the end-users (MDs - medical doctors) and the developers (engineers). This avoids utilizing the potential of such platforms in full. VAVframe (volumetric analysis and visualization framework) proposes a new intermediary user group between the above mentioned two user classes to solve this problem to maximize the benefits of such a platform. This new class of users are called application designers (ADs). They enable VAVframe, in addition to providing conventional platforms' functionality, to respond to the MDs' needs in a fast and efficient way

Interactive data Language (IDL) is an array-oriented data analysis and visualization application, which is widely used in research, commerce, and education. It is meaningful to make user IDL applications collaborative between computers over networks, using a common message broker as the underlying communication system. In order to achieve the global collaboration, we have brought together in the research a Grid-based collaboration paradigm, a shared event model, different implementing structures, methodologies and technologies. We have succeeded in our prototype codes, and we are currently working on a real life IDL application package to make it collaborative. At the same time, we are trying to find better structures and methods for the collaboration in general user IDL applications.
