In this paper we compare the quality of three different principle component analysis (PCA) based methods to generate transfer functions for the 3D visualization of imaging spectroscopy data. We discuss three criteria for judging the quality of features in these visualizations. These criteria are used to interpret visualizations of features in the brain of the snail Lymnaea Stagnalis. We show that the PCA method that uses model additional information, clearly results in superior visualizations.

The problem of perceptually optimizing complex visualizations is a difficult one, involving perceptual as well as aesthetic issues. In our experience, controlled experiments are quite limited in their ability to uncover interrelationships among visualization parameters, and thus may not be the most useful way to develop rules-of-thumb or theory to guide the production of high-quality visualizations. In this paper, we propose a new experimental approach to optimizing visualization quality that integrates some of the strong points of controlled experiments with methods more suited to investigating complex highly-coupled phenomena. We use human-in-the-loop experiments to search through visualization parameter space, generating large databases of rated visualization solutions. This is followed by data mining to extract results such as exemplar visualizations, guidelines for producing visualizations, and hypotheses about strategies leading to strong visualizations. The approach can easily address both perceptual and aesthetic concerns, and can handle complex parameter interactions. We suggest a genetic algorithm as a valuable way of guiding the human-in-the-loop search through visualization parameter space. We describe our methods for using clustering, histogramming, principal component analysis, and neural networks for data mining. The experimental approach is illustrated with a study of the problem of optimal texturing for viewing layered surfaces so that both surfaces are maximally observable.

We present a practical and general-purpose approach to large and complex visual data analysis where visualization processing, rendering and subsequent human interpretation is constrained to the subset of data deemed interesting by the user. In many scientific data analysis applications, "interesting" data can be defined by compound Boolean range queries of the form (temperature > 1000) AND (70 < pressure < 90). As data sizes grow larger, a central challenge is to answer such queries as efficiently as possible. Prior work in the visualization community has focused on answering range queries for scalar fields within the context of accelerating the search phase of isosurface algorithms. In contrast, our work describes an approach that leverages state-of-the-art indexing technology from the scientific data management community called "bitmap indexing." Our implementation, which we call "DEX" (short for dextrous data explorer), uses bitmap indexing to efficiently answer multivariate, multidimensional data queries to provide input to a visualization pipeline. We present an analysis overview and bench-mark results that show bitmap indexing offers significant storage and performance improvements when compared to previous approaches for accelerating the search phase of isosurface algorithms. More importantly, since bitmap indexing supports complex multi-dimensional, multivariate range queries, it is more generally applicable to scientific data visualization and analysis problems. In addition to benchmark performance and analysis, we apply DEX to a typical scientific visualization problem encountered in combustion simulation data analysis. © 2005 IEEE.

Hierarchies of plane graphs, called graph pyramids, can be used for collecting, storing, and analyzing geographical information based on images or other input data. The visualization of graph pyramids facilitates studies about their structure, such as their vertex distribution or height in relation of a specific input image. Thus, a researcher can debug contraction processes and ask for statistical information. Furthermore, it improves the better understanding of geographical data, like landscape properties or thematical maps. In this paper, we present an interactive visualization tool that supports several coordinated views on graph pyramids, subpyramids, level graphs, thematical maps, etc. We discuss a brief case study on the basis of a small sample image and conclude the paper with future work.

The paper describes a method developed for interactive data visualization and exploration with applications in the automotive industry. The input data set contains a large number of function graphs. Each of the graphs is characterized by a set of basic attributes. The technique that is used for visualization includes two linked views: a map view (or attribute space view), where all function graphs are represented as a point or an icon on the map, and a linked function graph view. The map view provides additional visualization possibilities and allows user interaction. Additional features like brushing in both views, graph management, and related issues like interpolation of the graphs are described.

visualizations of 2D scalar fields are often based on the rendering of 3D surfaces. Combinations of standard 3D rendering techniques using color, transparency, texturing, and lighting can be employed to create visualizations for multiple surfaces. However, the transition from foreground to background due to surface intersections can confound accurate surface perception, even for techniques that work well for overlapping non-intersecting surfaces. Our research proposes a generalized method of decomposing and stratifying these surfaces into layered components, allowing complete rendering control of each surface component. We explore different rendering schemes based on stratification values and report initial results from experimentation.

The first data and information visualization techniques and systems were developed and presented without a systematic evaluation; however, researchers have become, and are more and more, aware of the importance of evaluation (Plaisant, 2004)¹. Evaluation is not only a means of improving techniques and applications, but it can also produce evidence of measurable benefits that will encourage adoption. Yet, evaluating visualization applications or techniques, is not simple. We deem visualization applications should be developed using a user-centered design approach and that evaluation should take place in several phases along the process and with different purposes. An account of what issues we consider relevant while planning an evaluation in Medical data visualization can be found in (Sousa Santos and Dillenseger, 2005) ². In that work the question “how well does a visualization represent the underlying phenomenon and help the user understand it?” is identified as fundamental, and is decomposed in two aspects: A) the evaluation of the representation of the phenomenon (first part of the question). B) the evaluation of the users’ performance in their tasks when using the visualization, which implies the understanding of the phenomenon (second part of the question). We contend that these questions transcend Medical data visualization and can be considered central to evaluating data and Information visualization applications and techniques in general. In fact, the latter part of the question is related to the question Freitas et al. (2009) ³ deem crucial to user centered visualization evaluation: “How do we know if information visualization tools are useful and usable for real users performing real visualization tasks?” In what follows issues and methods that we have been using to tackle this latter question, are briefly addressed. This work describes the AirQ2: Quito Air Quality Monitoring and visualization Tool, which is a web application for data visualization of meteorological and contaminant data of the Ecuadorian capital. The tool was implemented in R-shiny and allows the users to visualize hourly, daily, monthly profiles of the variables;a variety of univariate and multivariate graphs for exploratory data analysis;as well as, a spatial geolocalized representation of the contaminants. AirQ2 can support decision and policy makers to develop environmental policies and regulations;as well as, help to the general public to better understand and educate on air pollution tendencies in urban conglomerates.

As data continue to grow beyond enormous sizes, visualization in three dimensions becomes the preferred way to analyze and solve complex problems. When visualization techniques are combined with technology that allows for global collaboration and sharing of high-resolution images the Department of Defense has a tool for making faster and better decisions. Government and academic researchers engaged in analysis and simulation can access high performance computing remotely from their desktops improving both resource utilization and productivity. The need for networked visualization is strongly driven by those agencies and organizations where the cost or impact of decision-making is very high. Such decision-making revolves around large datasets, sophisticated modeling, and is based on complex data sharing and collaboration between remote heterogeneous teams. Clearly, organizations facing the need to analyze complex data sets will realize great benefits by creating networked visualization solutions. © 2005 IEEE.
