This paper presents a comparison among mesh simplification methods performed through quality indices and a controlled experiment involving 32 observers. The simplification methods: OpenMesh, OpenMesh with a normal flipping criterion and QSlim, were compared at two simplification levels: 50% and 20% of the original number of faces. Results obtained using the quality indices and the controlled experiment were compared and show that some quality indices can be used as reasonable estimators of the observers' performance in specific circumstances.

Visualising large graphs faces the challenges of both data complexity and visual complexity. This paper presents a framework for visualising large graphs that reduces data complexity using the clustered graph model and provides users with navigational approaches for browsing clustered graphs. A key design task of such a system is to define a strategy for generating logical abstractions of a clustered graph during navigation. An appropriate abstraction strategy should represent a clustered graph well and avoid visual overload. The semantic fisheye view of a clustered graph is proposed for such a purpose. Two case studies were investigated, and the experiment results show that during navigation the first-order fisheye view of a clustered graph conserves visual complexity at a constant level.

Probabilistic latent semantic analysis (pLSA) is a powerful statistical technique to analyze relation between factors in dyadic data. Although various pLSA-based applications, ranging from information retrieval, information filtering, to text-mining and visualization, have been successfully conducted, they can not afford dynamic revising of model when one of the factors changes constantly. In this paper, we take the advantage of decoupling ability of pLSA thoroughly, and propose a more elegant approach based on maximum likelihood estimation to gain an incremental learning with the drift of a factor. We demonstrate our method in the context of collaborative filtering where single user interests change fast, but the community interests remain almost constant. Experiments against the MovieLens and EachMovie data sets reveal that the proposed method improves the recommending accuracy 10% further beyond the original pLSA at a less computation cost

In this paper, we present a method for clustering spatio-temporal pass trajectories in soccer games by using multi-scale structural matching and rough clustering techniques. The problems of irregular sampling intervals and irregular sequence lengths are dealt by multiscale matching, and the problem of possible local disturbance of a dissimilarity matrix caused by matching failure is dealt by rough clustering. Experimental results demonstrate that the combination of these methods leads to successful discovery of interesting pass patterns in the real soccer game records, for example, side-attack after complex pass transactions, and zigzag pass transactions, as well as the ability of the proposed method as a grouping method for general spatio-temporal data.

Gaining a deep understanding of the detailed execution behavior and performance of complex software systems requires accurate tracing and analysis tools. Tracing tools such as the Linux trace toolkit (LTT) provide a detailed log of both system and user level events which may later be accessed and visualized. The information logged for each event includes the event type, a timestamp, and event type specific information. Most computer central processing units (CPU) now come with a cycle counter, thus enabling fast access, very high resolution (cycle level), timestamp values for events. Problems arise when tracing events from computer clusters containing numerous CPUs with independent clocks. Even CPUs in the same multiprocessor computer may not be fully synchronized, and in some cases run at different clock frequencies. visualization tools, when presenting a timeline of events logged on different CPUs must therefore translate the individual timestamps to a common time reference, thus taking into account the clock delay for each CPU. Several experiments were conducted in order to characterize the CPU cycle counter accuracy and measure the synchronization accuracy achievable using conventional computer networks. The resulting data is of immediate use for all applications concerned with computer clocks or network synchronization accuracy. It is used in the forthcoming version of the Linux trace toolkit to select the most appropriate mechanisms to compute a common time reference for events coming from different CPUs

This paper describes a novel methodology to reduce the scanning time and to extract bar dimensional information from images generated by an inductive sensor. Using a sparsely populated data set obtained from a reduced number of scan lines, faster high resolution images are generated using image interpolation techniques. Having generated these images, image filtering, peak picking and neural networks methods are applied to extract bar dimensional information and accurate 3 D visualization.

Research in the data-oriented areas of computer science is contributing a new wave of theory and tools for learning from data. Some of the research areas complement those in statistics and others overlap. While the research topics of the two fields are not the same, the goals of the research are identical-to enhance theory, methods, models, and systems for the study of data. Unification-close collaboration in research, in teaching, and in applications-would greatly enhance new developments in learning from data.

Networks are playing an ever-increasing role in our world. Network size and capacity continues to increase, and consequently, become more complicated. They become so large, in fact, that the only viable test method is to use a modeling and simulation approach to analyze the effects that various inputs have on network performance, e.g., network traffic, weather effects, etc. While this may work well, it is still only an approximation to the true performance. Only a real network, with real hardware will provide real results. General Dynamics C4 Systems has been working collaboratively with the U.S. Army's CERDEC on a network in the loop architecture to combine a real network with a simulated one. This will allow a real network to be fully integrated with a simulated network such that any and all simulated nodes will pass a Turing test with respect to the real nodes. The proposed network in the loop implementation, while effective, is only proof-of-concept, handling only ICMP messages. Using OPNET Modeler 10.5, a successful implementation is demonstrated by means of passing a Turing test. This allows for multiple simulation subnets to interact with a real network. HLA 1.3 is used as a means for converting between IP traffic and simulated IP traffic. Furthermore, a 3D visualization of the entire network has been developed representing both real and simulated nodes, including effects on their communications. Future improvements may include streaming data between real and simulated nodes, full TCP and UDP traffic, and multiple routing protocol interaction

FASPRO is an accurate and extremely efficient tool to perform deterministic analysis of propagation in urban picocells and microcells. A fully 3D propagation model is considered. The topographical input data are based on a 3D plane-facets model of the urban environment, which is given in terms of DXF or IGES files. FASPRO is able to read DXF files from most of the CAGD and topographical tools. In addition, FASPRO has its own facility to create new urban scenes. FASPRO visualizes the geometry on the screen as a 2D map of the urban scene or a 3D isoparametric view. The electromagnetic analysis is performed using uniform theory of diffraction (UTD) techniques. First order coupling mechanisms (direct, reflected and edge-diffracted rays), second order coupling mechanisms (double reflected, reflected-diffracted, diffracted-reflected, double diffracted) and third order mechanisms (e.g. reflected-diffracted-reflected) are included. It is important to highlight that, thanks to the incorporation of the diffraction in all the edges of the 3D model, coverage in areas of the deep shadow of the transmitter antenna can be predicted well. A new ray-tracing algorithm is used to speed-up the computations. This ray-tracing algorithm, called Angular Z-Buffer (AZB), is based on a modification of the Z-Buffer and the bounding volumes schemes, in which the elements are arranged in an angular map.

Renderings of volumetric data have become an important data analysis tool for applications ranging from medicine to scientific simulation. We propose a volumetric drawing system that directly extracts sparse linear features, such as silhouettes and suggestive contours, using a temporally coherent seed-and-traverse framework. In contrast to previous methods based on isosurfaces or nonrefractive transparency, producing these drawings requires examining an asymptotically smaller subset of the data, leading to efficiency on large data sets. In addition, the resulting imagery is often more comprehensible than standard rendering styles, since it focuses attention on important features in the data. We test our algorithms on datasets up to 512(3), demonstrating interactive extraction and rendering of line drawings in a variety of drawing styles.
