The cyclogram of human gait uncovers the relationship between thigh and knee motion. Because it is believed to be invariant for the walking pattern of the same person it leads to a better understanding of gait. If we use it as the signature in gait recognition and verification, it could lead to an automatic person recognition system using video footage from security cameras. The body contours are extracted by image subtraction and edge detection and rotation angles of thigh and lower leg are derived by regression analysis. Then we apply a weighted moving average and a low-pass filter to smooth the angle data. Cyclograms are generated as the thigh angle vs. knee angle and are fitted by non-uniform B-Spline curves. To compare the signatures between two gaits, the differences of shape and phase of the cyclogram are calculated using the point projection method and extreme points of curves. Finally, classification is done via the k-nearest classifier and cross-validation with the leave-one-out rule.

Analyzing historical information can show how a software system evolved into its current state, which parts of the system are stable and which have changed more. However, historical analysis implies processing a vast amount of information making the interpretation of the results difficult. To address this issue, we introduce the notion of the history of source code artifacts as a first class entity and define measurements, which summarize the evolution of such entities. We use these measurements to define rules by which to detect different characteristics of the evolution of class hierarchies. Furthermore, we discuss the results we obtained by visualizing them using a polymetric view. We apply our approach on two large open source case studies and classify their class hierarchies based on their history.

analysis of multi-body system dynamics is the core content of Virtual Prototyping(VP) of mechanical system. Locomotive can be described as a multi-body system, here presents visualized VP developing platform. The virtual model was obtained from CAD system like CAXA, and the attributes of inertia, mass, etc., were extracted from features, parts and assemblies of CAD environment. The model with uniform format, which includes geometrical data and attribute data, was transmitted into the visualized platform of VP and was mapped into the topology structure of multi-body system of locomotive, in which the dynamics computing equations were constructed and the result was resolved and visualized. All of these were given in integrated visualized VP system named VPMS. A freight car model is built for testifying the system, which obeys the theory mentioned above. The simulating result shows that the platform is satisfying for the visualization of modeling and dynamics computation.

The focal goal of our research is to develop a general framework which can automatically analyze the sports video, detect the sports events, and finally offer an efficient and user-friendly system for sports video retrieval. In our earlier work, a novel multimedia data mining technique was proposed for automatic soccer event extraction by adopting multimodal feature analysis. Until now, this framework has been performed on the detection of goal and corner kick events and the results are quite impressive. Correspondingly, in this work, the detected video events are modeled and effectively stored in the database. A temporal query model is designed to satisfy the comprehensive temporal query requirements, and the corresponding graphical query language is developed. The advanced characteristics make our model particularly well suited for searching events in a large scale video database.

On June 13, 2004 the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented a new procedure at Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) that authorizes arrival-departure operations on intersecting runways 14R/27L with modified separation requirements at the runway intersection. The procedure is expected to recoup reductions in arrival and departure capacities associated with operations on these runways that resulted from discontinuing land-and-hold-short operations (LAHSO) in 2000 and reduce arrival and departure delays at ORD when the airport is operated in plan B configuration. This configuration is used about 10 percent of the time. This paper describes the background analysis of relevant operational metrics conducted to compare and evaluate candidate procedures for their relative benefits and to help select the most promising ones. It describes the model developed to quantify and visualize the airport's operations, the methodology used to validate model performance with ARTS data, and the Monte Carlo approach taken for comparing and evaluating capacity benefits of four candidate arrival-departure procedures.

The problem of semantic video structuring is vital for automated management of large video collections. The goal is to automatically extract from the raw data the inner structure of a video collection; so that a whole new range of applications to browse and search video collections can be derived out of this high-level segmentation. To reach this goal, we exploit techniques that consider the full spectrum of video content; it is fundamental to properly integrate technologies from the fields of computer vision, audio analysis, natural language processing and machine learning. In this paper, a multimodal feature vector providing a rich description of the audio, visual and text modalities is first constructed. Boosted Random Fields are then used to learn two types of relationships : between features and labels and between labels associated with various modalities for improved consistency of the results. The parameters of this enhanced model are found iteratively by using two successive stages of Boosting. We experimented using the TRECvid corpus and show results that validate the approach over existing studies.

The evaluation of classroom experiences that promote collaborative and active learning is very important in computer supported collaborative learning, CSCL. The purpose of this paper is to assess the perception of students of the use of collaborative learning tools. We combine the use of qualitative and quantitative methods and data in an educational setting that have both physical and computer-supported collaboration in a business class environment. In this paper we did an evaluation in three business courses on corporate strategy that took place throughout three academic terms. The study used a questionnaire with both open and closed questions and the statistics that were supplied by BSCW basic support for cooperative work platform. The results from our analysis allow us to reflect and draw conclusions on the changes of attitudes towards collaboration and learning in a mixed use setting of both physical and on line environments and the need for further studies of this experience.

On the body surface the electric field generated by the cardiac muscles consists of electric potential maxima and minima that increase and decrease during each cardiac cycle. The recording of these electric potentials as a function of time is called electrocardiography, and the resulting signal is called the electrocardiogram (ECG). The ECG signal is used extensively as a low cost diagnostic tool to provide information concerning the heart's state of health. Reliable and accurate detection of the QRS complex and R wave peak in ECG signals is essential in computer-based ECG analysis. In this paper we evaluate the significance of detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) for studying heart rate variability in children with sleep disordered breathing. An enhanced Hilbert transform (EHT) algorithm was used to derive the heart rate variability (HRV) signal. We compare the DFA values with approximate entropy and Poincare plots of HRV signals as these are very useful in characterization and visualization of HRV data. Our data demonstrated differences in DFA parameters between periods of normal and abnormal breathing and also between sleep stages. These results suggest that DFA is suitable for the long-term analysis of non-stationary time series such as HRV signals and may also be applied in the detection of sleep disordered breathing

This paper proposes a novel data clustering algorithm, coined 'cellular ants', which combines principles of cellular automata and ant colony optimization algorithms to group similar multidimensional data objects within a two-dimensional grid. The proposed method assigns data objects to unique ants, which actively move around, leave pheromones and follow trails of similar ants. Cellular automata principles based on simple, discrete neighborhood densities determine an ant's directional movements, so that clusters emerge. The novel concept of 'positional swapping' organizes these clusters internally based on multi-dimensional data value similarity. As a result, shared cluster borders in grid space contain data objects that are nearby in parameter space. This method is algorithmically simple, as it is based on a few user-chosen variables and uses fixed discrete values instead of probability algorithms. This clustering technique is evaluated using several datasets, while its methodology and computational performance is compared to similar approaches

Characterizing the variations of the human body shape is fundamentally important to many applications ranging from animation to product design. 3D scanning technology makes it possible to digitize the complete surfaces of a large number of human bodies, providing much richer information about the body shape than the traditional anthropometric measurements. This technology opens up opportunities to extract new measurements for quantifying the body shape. Using the data from the first large scale 3D anthropometric survey, the CAESAR project, we demonstrate that the human body shape can be represented by a small number of principal components. Principal component analysis extracts orthogonal basis vectors, called eigenpersons, from the space of body shapes. The shape of any individual person can then be expressed by the linear combination of the basis vectors. We demonstrate that some of these components correspond to the commonly used body measurements like height and weight and others indicate new ways of charactering body shape variations. We develop tools to visualize the changes of the body shape along the main components. These tools help understand the meaningful components of the human body shape.
