ParaView is a popular open-source general-purpose scientific visualization application. One of the many visualization tools available within ParaView is the volume rendering of unstructured meshes. Volume rendering is a technique that renders a mesh as a translucent solid, thereby allowing the user to see every point in three-dimensional space simultaneously. Because volume rendering is computationally intensive, ParaView now employs a unique parallel rendering algorithm to speed the processes. The parallel rendering algorithm is very flexible. It works equally well for both volumes and surfaces, and can properly render the intersection of a volume and opaque polygonal surfaces. The parallel rendering algorithm can also render images for tiled displays. In this paper, we explore the implementation of parallel unstructured volume rendering in ParaView.

Learning Management Systems (LMSs) store different kinds of e-learning related data, whose analysis is important for monitoring students' learning processes and for helping detection of potential problems on these processes. Different researches apply Information visualization concepts and techniques for graphically and interactively presenting LMS data for analysis. Nonetheless, these researches show data obtained by predefined database queries, which fit only specific analysis situations, in despite of unforeseen situations derived from final user's knowledge about e-learning domain. Taking into account these situations, this paper presents a solution that enable LMS users to define database attributes they want to analyze, without need to know the internal organization of LMS database. Selected attributes are treated as a universal relation query and, after executed, query results are automatically converted into interactive graphical representations, avoiding user's concern with selecting the more adequate chart.

Estimating dynamic regulatory pathways using DNA microarray time-series can provide invaluable information about the dynamic interactions among genes and result in new methods of rational drug design. Even though several purely computational methods have been introduced for DNA pathway analysis, most of these techniques do not provide a fully interactive method to explore and analyze these dynamic interactions in detail, which is necessary to obtain a full understanding. In this paper, we present a unified modeling and visual approach focusing on visual analysis of gene regulatory pathways over time. As a preliminary step in analyzing the gene interactions, the method applies two different techniques, a clustering algorithm and an auto regressive (AR) model. This approach provides a successful prediction of the dynamic pathways involved in the biological process under study. At this level, these pure computational techniques lack the transparency required for analysis and understanding of the gene interactions. To overcome the limitations, we have designed a visual analysis method that applies several visualization techniques, including pixel-based gene representation, animation, and multi-dimensional scaling (MDS), in a new way. This visual analysis framework allows the user to quickly and thoroughly search for and find the dynamic interactions among genes, highlight interesting gene information, show the detailed annotations of the selected genes, compare regulatory behaviors for different genes, and support gene sequence analysis for the interesting genes. In order to enhance these analysis capabilities, several methods are enabled, providing a simple graph display, a pixel-based gene visualization technique, and a relation-displaying technique among gene expressions and gene regulatory pathways.

The data needs of current and future PetaScale applications have increased over the last half decade to the extent that appropriate data management has become a crucial requirement. This concerns not only the storage of data produced by the new class of PetaScale applications, but also the data exchanges needed for coupling applications with concurrent analysis, online datavisualization for validation, and others. To address such dynamic code coupling, we introduce the concept of an extensible, dynamic, and flexible data workspace, termed LIVE. In contrast to the data exchanges programmed with MPI, MPI-IO, or grid software, LIVE focuses on data exchanges carried out without a priori knowledge of potential data requirements. Examples include exchanges required by adhoc or dynamically determined methods for data validation, for general dataanalysis tasks, or for datavisualization. Run on an execution environment comprised of integrated dynamic discovery and on-line management services, LIVE is used to create a 'data workspace' for a working molecular dynamics code base utilized by mechanical and materials engineers at Georgia Tech, for multi-scale materials modeling. Measurements of both this application's data workspace and of the basic primitives in the LIVE framework demonstrate that the environment's substantial flexibility has minimal impact on overall performance, and in fact, that it improves performance in a number of usage scenarios. In particular, for a visualization pipeline example derived from our collaborators, we see a slight improvement over a solution based on MPI-IO, and a further improvement of up to 5% by utilizing LIVE's ability to overlap communication with user-specified computation.

In this paper we discuss the application of multiple linked views for advanced vortex investigation inflow data. Local feature detectors and additional measures integrate into an interactive flow feature detection system based on multiple linked views. We discuss how linking and brushing of derived feature information can lead to increased performance in interactive feature analysis. In a case study we demonstrate how the possibility to integrate the information of multiple detectors leads to sound understanding of vortex type features. Enhanced credibility and combined advantages of several detectors can be achieved by uniting the results of multiple feature detectors in multiple coordinated views.

Evaluation of user interface design is usually based on usability testing methods. In this paper we analyzed and described the user behavior in the form of the user model. The user model is built on a data set which was acquired through observation of user behavior. The criterion we use for the evaluation of the usability of interface design is the user cognitive load. We present different tools for visualization, simulation and easier analysis of the user model. Because each of the methods and tools presented use only part of the user model, in the end we present methods on how to use the complete user model to correctly describe user behavior. In order to understand such a complex model we need to have a proper visualization tool. The concept of such a visualization tool is presented at the end of this paper.

We propose a novel approach of knowledge visualization method by adopting graph-based visualization technique and incorporating Dashboard concept for higher education institutions. Two aspects are emphasized, knowledge visualization and human-machine interaction. The knowledge visualization helps users to analyze the comprehensive characteristics of the students, lecturers and subjects after the clustering process and the interaction enable domain knowledge transfer and the use of the human's perceptual capabilities, thus increases the intelligence of the system. The knowledge visualization is enhanced through the dashboard concept where it provides significant patterns of knowledge on real-world and theoretical modeling which could be called wisdom. The framework consists of the system architecture and design for higher education environment is presented in this paper.

We present a new method for visualizing similarities between objects. The method is called VOS, which is an abbreviation for visualization of similarities. The aim of VOS is to provide a low-dimensional visualization in which objects are located in such a way that the distance between any pair of objects reflects their similarity as accurately as possible. Because the standard approach to visualizing similarities between objects is to apply multidimensional scaling, we pay special attention to the relationship between VOS and multidimensional scaling.
