We describe a two-year experience of fully integrating algorithm visualization technology into a CS2 course on data structures and algorithms. Our integration methodology was based on the engagement taxonomy proposed by the working group on Improving the Educational Impact of Algorithm visualization: in particular, we used five forms of engagement of this taxonomy, that is, the no-viewing, the viewing, the changing, the constructing and the presenting forms. The integration of algorithm visualization technology into the course culminated in the writing of a textbook on the design, analysis and visualization of data structures and algorithms, whose reading is strictly dependent on the use of an algorithm visualization tool, called Alvie, which has been developed by the authors. DCE-MRI is a diagnostic method that can visualize neoangiogenic-induced vascular changes. I Typically, the analysis of these data is time-consuming and the visualization of the quantitative information on tumor vasculature, derivable from DCE-MRI, is not easy and comfortable. In this study, we propose a method to accelerate computation and analysis of DCE-MRI data, while making easy to use the functional information obtained from model-based functional analysis.

Predictive knowledge discovery is an important knowledge acquisition method. It is also used in the clustering process of data mining. visualization is very helpful for high dimensional dataanalysis, but not precise and this limits its usability in quantitative cluster analysis. In this paper, we adopt a visual technique called HOV3 to explore and verify clustering results with quantified measurements. With the quantified contrast between grouped data distributions produced by HOV3, users can detect clusters and verify their validity efficiently.

VisuGATOR is a protocol visualization tool that allows scan trace data quickly and to easily identify pathological situations. VisuGATOR is flexible and configurable to display key trace data as space time diagrams with color coding for local protocol states. By incorporating variable time resolution, most of the trace can be examined quickly at a high level, and the interesting segments can then be scrutinized in greater detail. VisuGATOR is freely available from the University of Florida, where the tool is undergoing development to make it adaptable for visualization general network protocols.

Ambient Intelligent Systems have been proposed for their potential to track collaborative activities in the work place, capture them, and in real time respond to them. The, longer term goal is to develop embedded technologies that provide intelligent feedback in predictable office environments but also address the unpredictable working environments of nomadic knowledge workers and of remote workers engaged in virtual collaboration with those physically present. Some of these systems are relatively close to market and others are less immediately applicable. This paper suggests that a heterogeneous mix of such systems is likely to be necessary for some time to come. A prototype real time location system for mapping the real-time location of workers in offices has been developed by Johnson Controls. During tests it has been found to positively assist in gathering information for better management of space and support of collaborative activity. This has proved to justify the costs.

The retrospective fault analysis of complex technical devices based on documents emerging in the advanced steps of the product life cycle can reveal error sources and problems, which have not been discovered by simulations or other test methods in the early stages of the product life cycle. This paper presents a novel approach to support the failure analysis through (i) a semi-automatic analysis of databases containing product-related documents in natural language (e. g., problem and error descriptions, repair and maintenance protocols, service bills) using information retrieval and text mining techniques and (ii) an interactive exploration of the data mining results. Our system supports visual data mining by mapping the results of analyzing failure-related documents onto corresponding 3D models. Thus, visualization of statistics about failure sources can reveal problem sources resulting from problematic spatial configurations.

Understanding usage patterns of various university resources is important when making budget and departmental allocations. Computer labs are one of the most highly used classrooms on campus. In order to best make use of them, IT professionals must know how the variables of platform, seat count, lab location, and departmental association might influence usage patterns. After conducting user studies and developing and getting feedback on several iterations of visualizations the client's goals were discussed. Key goals in this process include seeing trends over time, detailed usage reports, aggregate data viewing, and being able to detect outliers. Four visualization techniques, consisting of geospatial maps, tree maps, radial maps, and spectrum maps were created to handle these goals. It is evident that a number of different visualizing techniques are needed, including static and interactive versions.

In this work we present an integrated set of tools allowing a multi-step process that, starting from raw datasets, brings them through dimensionality reduction, preclustering analysis and clustering assessment, to a visual and interactive environment for data exploration. At the core of the process lies the idea of subdividing the process of data clusterization into different steps: a preliminary analysis in which algorithmic parameters are estimated, a clustering step based on the previous analysis and, finally, a clusterization assessment step including interactive clustering. This last step allows users to participate in the process of clustering and helps them figuring out the data underlying structures. The models are actually implemented in a group of integrated, user-friendly tools under the MATLAB environment, featuring a number of classical and novel data processing, visualization, assessment and interaction methods.

Existing physical artifacts including sculpture, mechanical parts, and anatomical structures are commonly acquired by modern surface and volumetric scanning technologies for archival, visualization, and diagnostic purposes. While the native representations for such data are largely sufficient for visualization purposes, more advanced field simulation currently requires extensive manual conversions into simplified surface and volume meshes compatible with the traditional finite element analysis pipeline. These conversions are tedious, error-prone, and require expertise in the mesh construction process. We demonstrate automated field simulation on acquired artifacts, bypassing the difficult geometric and topological meshing problems through a meshfree paradigm based on approximate distance fields computed from the native acquired data through sampling.

The combination of pixelization and dimensional stacking uniquely facilitates the visualization and analysis of large, multidimensional databases. Pixelization is the mapping of each data point in some set to a pixel in a 2D image. Dimensional stacking is a layout method where N dimensions are projected onto the axes of an information display. We have combined and expanded upon both methods in an application named NeuroVis that supports interactive, visual data mining. Users can spontaneously perform ad hoc queries, cluster the results through dimension reordering, and execute analyses on selected pixels. While NeuroVis is not intrinsically restricted to any particular database, it is named after its original function: the examination of a vast neuroscience database. Images produced from its approaches have now appeared in the Journal of Neurophysiology(1) and NeuroVis itself is being used for educational purposes in neuroscience classes at Emory University. In this paper we detail the theoretical foundations of NeuroVis, the interaction techniques it supports, an informal evaluation of how it has been used in neuroscience investigations, and a generalization of its utility and limitations in other domains.
