In this paper we present an application of single cluster visualization (SCV) a technique to visualize single clusters of high-dimensional data. This method maps a single cluster to the plane trying to preserve the relative distances of feature vectors to the corresponding prototype vector. Thus, fuzzy clustering results representing relative distances in the form of a partition matrix as well as hard clustering partitions can be visualized with this technique. The resulting two-dimensional scatter plot illustrates the compactness of a certain cluster and the need of additional prototypes as well. In this work, we will demonstrate the visualization method on a practical application.

The evaluation of Information visualization (InfoVis) techniques can help to identify specific strengths and weaknesses of these methods:, The following article describes the results of an empirical study assessing the contribution of an interactive InfoVis method based on a spring metaphor (GRAVI), Exploratory,dataanalysis (EDA) and Machine Learning (ML) to ease understanding. The application domain is the psychotherapeutic treatment of anorectic young women. The three methods are supposed to support the therapists in finding the variables which influence success or failure of the therapy. To conduct the evaluation we developed a report system which helped subjects to formulate and document in a self-directed manner the insights they gained when using the three methods. The results indicate that the three methods are complementary and should be used in conjunction.

Intelligence analysis is difficult due to the volume and complexity of the data, as well as the subtlety of the connections that have to be made in order to identify threats. Information visualization techniques are necessary for human interpretation of this data, but many use a single monitor that lack the resolution and area needed to effectively display it. We developed an application specifically for a high resolution tiled display, taking advantage of its increased area and pixel count to show a detailed and thorough geospatial and timeline view of terrorist activity. These displays were well suited for intelligence analysisvisualization due to their ability to provide access to numerous details from multiple views, and allowed users to maintain the context of data. This work showcased the ability of high resolution visualizations to assist intelligence analysts. Copyright 2007 ACM.

Many countries around the world had suffered blackout incidents due to inter-area oscillations in recent decades. analysis of system wide oscillatory stability requires a more effective engineering tool for modeling the wide area dynamics in power network. This paper proposes a datavisualization based method for assessing the wide area power oscillatory stability. The phasor measurements are used and estimated to obtain more real-time system operating data by using a linear state estimator. The phasor data are then used as the input data for visualizing wide area dynamics. Several visualization modules for displaying the phased angle dynamics are discussed and implemented. Test results of application of the proposed method to an inter-area oscillation event are reported. Sensitivity of the performance of the proposed visualization modules to different system sizes is illustrated.

Most terrain models are created based on a sampling of real-world terrain, and are represented using linearly-interpolated surfaces such as triangulated irregular networks or digital elevation models. The existing methods for the creation of such models and representations of real-world terrain lack a crucial analytical consideration of factors such as the errors introduced during sampling and geological variations between sample points. We present a volumetric representation of real-world terrain in which the volume encapsulates both sampling errors and geological variations and dynamically changes size based on such errors and variations. We define this volume using an octree, and demonstrate that when used within applications such as line-of-sight, the calculations are guaranteed to be within a user-defined confidence level of the real-world terrain.

We propose novel techniques for microarray image analysis. In particular, we describe an overall pipeline able to solve the most common problems of microarray image analysis. We propose the microarray image rotation algorithm (MIRA) and the statistical gridding pipeline (SGRIP) as two advanced modules devoted to restoring the original microarray grid orientation and to detecting, the correct geometrical information about each spot of input microarray, respectively. Both solutions work by making use of statistical observations, obtaining adaptive and reliable information about each spot property. They improve the performance of the microarray image segmentation pipeline (MISP) we recently developed. MIRA, MISP, and SGRIP modules have been developed as plug-ins for an advanced framework for microarray image analysis. A new quality measure able to effectively evaluate the adaptive segmentation with respect to the fixed (e.g., nonadaptive) circle segmentation of each spot is proposed. We present a set of visualization methods for the analysis of multivariate data recorded from the measurement of the performance of athletes during training. We use a modified training device to measure the force, acceleration, displacement, and speed of the athlete's feet and arms while performing a certain training exercise. We are interested in visually measuring and comparing the performance over several training sessions of the same and/or different athletes. For this, we adapt and extend several visualization methods for multivariate data. First, we use an enhanced signal plot and statistics plot to visualize the regularity of repetitions within a given exercise. Second, we use a novel texture-based signal plot to eliminate signal noise and emphasize the average repetitive pattern of the exercise. Finally, we use a signal clustering technique, visualized with a matrix plot, to detect similar exercises over long periods of time. We demonstrate our approaches with actual data from training sessions of several athletes.

In this work a multi-step approach for clustering assessment, visualization and data validation is introduced. Three main approaches for data clustering are used and compared: K-means, Self Organizing Maps and Probabilistic Principal Surfaces. A model explorer approach with different similarity measures is used to obtain the best parameters of the methods. The approach is used to identify genes periodically expressed in tumors related to the human cell cycle. Finally, clusters are validated by using GO Term information.

A new challenge to datavisualization has arisen from a new laboratory technique that is capable of imaging a large number of biomedical relevant molecule types in a single tissue probe, termed the Toponome. While aiming at deciphering the biochemical interactions of the molecules, and thus their biological functions as well their roles in diseases, no current methods of image analysis are fully suited for this new quality of high-dimensional image data. To overcome this problem we demonstrate a novel framework for interactive real-time visualization, making use of standard graphics acceleration hardware. We show a sample implementation of a threshold-based visualization technique that is connected to the original work of the Toponome authors, improving it by means of fast user interaction.
