Cardiac angiography using multiple detector row computerized tomography (MDCT) scanners provides 3D data concerning the heart and, in particular, the left ventricle (LV), for different cardiac phases along one cardiac cycle. Exploring this data for LV function analysis is not an easy task, given the amount of data and time involved in segmenting (or revising results provided by automatic segmentation methods) up to 12 cardiac phases. CardioAnalyser, a tool for 4D LV segmentation from MDCT data which provides a protocol to help perform LV segmentation of all cardiac phases available is presented. It uses an automatic segmentation algorithm along with a procedure which guides the user through the process. Its main goal is to reuse as much information as possible from one cardiac phase to the next in order to reduce segmentation time and the amount of user interaction.

To approximate complex data, we propose new type of low-dimensional "principal object": principal cubic complex. This complex is a generalization of linear and nonlinear principal manifolds and includes them as a particular case. To construct such an object, we combine the method of topological grammars with the minimization of elastic energy defined for its embedment into multidimensional data space. The whole complex is presented as a system of nodes and springs and as a product of one-dimensional continua (represented by graphs), and the grammars describe how these continua transform during the process of optimal complex construction. The simplest case of a topological grammar ("add a node or bisect an edge") produces "principal trees" that are useful in many practical applications. We demonstrate how this can be applied to the analysis of bacterial genomes and for visualization of microarray data using "metro map" visual representation.

Since 2007 Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanow and Warsaw University of Technology, Faculty of Mechatronics are together developing precise, structured light-based scanning methods. This cooperation was established in order to elaborate solutions allowing documenting characteristics of the sutface of different cultural heritage objects. The gathered data are intended to support the processes of conservation, education, historical analysis as well as the sharing of the visualizations of the especially fragile objects. In order to fulfill those requirements for most of the historic artifacts, scanning with a spatial resolution of at least 2500 points per square millimeter is needed. As a result of those assumptions, files of a very large size are produced. Today's software environments for such a huge data processing and applications to visualize those data are very limited. Consequently, this raises the need for either a significant simplification of visualization process or a reduction of the shared results of measurements (by showing data concerning only a small parts of the heritage objects). Which path would be most suitable for the end users? Should this insufficiency of the visualization software cause a reduction of the quality of the measurement processes?

Modern 3D visualization environments for medical image data provide high interactivity and flexibility but depend on the expert knowledge and the experience of the user with respect to the software application. The definition of the visualization parameters is a manual time-consuming process and as a result, inter-patient or inter-study comparisons are extremely difficult. To overcome these drawbacks in case of the analysis and diagnosis of pathologies, standardization of 3D visualization is an important issue. For this purpose automatically generated digital video sequences can be used to convey the most important information contained in the data. In this paper, we present an improvement of our existing web-based service which is now able to calculate the video sequences in much shorter time exploiting the power of a CPU-cluster. The system requires to transfer a medical volume dataset from an arbitrary computer connected via Internet and sends back a number of video files automatically generated with direct volume rendering. To achieve an optimal load balancing of the available resources, the tasks of automatic adjustment of transfer functions, volume rendering, and video encoding are divided into small sub-requests, which are distributed to the different cluster nodes in order to be performed in parallel. An additional preview mode, which renders a number of dedicated frames, provides a direct feedback and quick overview. For the evaluation, we were focusing on the analysis of intracranial aneurysms and were able to show that the system can be successfully applied. Further on, the system was developed in a way that allows easy integration of other analysis tasks.
