We present a tool for interactive exploration of graphs that integrates advanced graph mining methods in an interactive visualization framework. The tool enables efficient exploration and analysis of complex graph structures. For flexible integration of state-of-the-art graph mining methods, the viewer makes use of the open source data mining platform KNIME. In contrast to existing graph visualization interfaces, all parts of the interface can be dynamically changed to specific visualization requirements, including the use of node type dependent icons, methods for a marking if nodes or edges and highlighting and a fluent graph that allows for iterative growing, shrinking and abstraction of (sub)graphs.

Many research efforts using anatomical image analysis have as their goal to identify biologically relevant objects present within the image data, to provide a means to quantitatively analyze these objects, to compare the distribution of those objects to other features, and finally to properly annotate the objects so as to be able share this analysis in an integrated informatics framework. The neuroinformatics tools designed to achieve these ends have been developed in a fragmented manner with each resource developing access to unique data sets and analytical capabilities, Their integration would enrich the neuroinformatic network enabling queries and analysis across a number of resources. A central objective of the Biomedical Informatics Research Network (BIRN) is to achieve this integration and we present here a demonstration of how two such tools - the Neuro Terrain Atlas/NetOStat client and the SMART Atlas - can expose their functionality via a re-usable interface, so as to promote interoperation of tools and data.

This paper(1) introduces a novel architecture to efficiently code in a self-organized manner, data from sequences or a hierarchy of sequences. The main objective of the architecture proposed is to achieve an inductive model of the sequential data through a learning algorithm in a finite vector space with generalization and prediction properties improved by the compression process. The architecture consists of a hierarchy of recurrent self-organized maps with emergence which performs a fractal codification of the sequences. An adaptive outlier detection algorithm is used to automatically extract the emergent properties of the maps. A visualization technique to help the analysis and interpretation of data is also developed. Experiments and results for the architecture are shown for an anomaly intrusion detection problem.

Radioactive ions injected into the decay ring of a Betabeam neutrino facility will constitute a continuous source of decay products distributed around the ring. Secondary ions from beta decays will differ in charge state from the primary ions and will follow widely off-momentum orbits. In the racetrack configuration of the ring, they will be mismatched in the long straights and may acquire large amplitudes, but the great majority of losses will be in the arcs. We describe here a comprehensive model of ion decay, secondary ion tracking, and loss detection, which has been implemented in the tracking and simulation code Accsim. Methods have been developed to accurately follow ion trajectories at large momentum deviations as well as to detect their impact coordinates on vacuum chamber walls and possibly inside magnetic elements. Using secondary-ion data from Accsim and post-processing with Mathematica, we have implemented a follow-on simulation in FLUKA with a 3D geometry of decay ring components and physics models for ion interactions in matter, allowing radiological studies and in particular the visualization and analysis of heat deposition in the dipole magnets which is a critical design factor for the ring. In our simulations we have also implemented absorber elements which are intended to localize the majority of losses outside of the dipoles. These studies provide estimates of ring performance (in terms of loss concentration and management), the effectiveness of absorbers, and the implications for successful superconducting dipole operation.

To facilitate decision making tasks it is necessary to be able to "see" the situation. An enormous array of intelligence gathering, database, and sensor sources of information are available. Methods for visualizing the information must be established and information presented in such a way that human attention is captured and maintained on the most critical aspects of the information. visualizations need to adapt to the changing circumstances to show the most relevant information at that time. We are developing a system called Holistic analysis, visualization, & Characterization Assessment Tool (HAVCAT) that uses intelligent agents that interact with the user to provide the correct information at the right time. This cutting edge system will enable visualization researchers to investigate techniques for adjusting visualizations based on user performance HAVCAT will employ domain ontologies to determine relationships within the data. The HAVCAT evidence reasoning agent distills the data and extracts the most pertinent actions or consequences. This paper describes the HAVCAT concepts and also research issues related to development of HAVCAT and techniques for directing user attention.

The development of the concepts within 3DVIEWNIX and of the software system 3DVIEWNIX itself dates back to the 1970s. Since then, a series of software packages for Computer Assisted visualization and analysis (CAVA) of images came out from our group, 3DVIEWNIX released in 1993, being the most recent, and all were distributed with source code. CAVASS, an open source system, is the latest in this series, and represents the next major incarnation of 3DVIEWNIX. It incorporates four groups of operations: IMAGE PROCESSING (including ROI, interpolation, filtering, segmentation, registration, morphological, and algebraic operations), visualization (including slice display, reslicing, MIP, surface rendering, and volume rendering), MANIPULATION (for modifying structures and surgery simulation), analysis (various ways of extracting quantitative information). CAVASS is designed to work on all platforms. Its key features are: (1) most major CAVA operations incorporated;(2) very efficient algorithms and their highly efficient implementations;(3) parallelized algorithms for computationally intensive operations;(4) parallel implementation via distributed computing on a cluster of PCs;(5) interface to other systems such as CAD/CAM software, ITK, and statistical packages;(6) easy to use GUI. In this paper, we focus on the image processing operations and compare the performance of CA VASS with that of ITK. Our conclusions based on assessing performance by utilizing a regular (6 MB), large (241 MB), and a super (873 MB) 3D image data set are as follows: CAVASS is considerably more efficient than ITK, especially in those operations which are computationally intensive. It can handle considerably larger data sets than ITK. It is easy and ready to use in applications since it provides an easy to use GUI. The users can easily build a cluster from ordinary inexpensive PCs and reap the full power of CAVASS inexpensively compared to expensive multiprocessing systems which are less efficient fo

This paper describes an alternative approach to extracting 3-D objects and volumes, from lists of given faces, edges, vertices, and the vertices' coordinates. Most graphics file formats store 3-D information for various purposes as a list of polygons, which does not provide a direct indication of structure or relationships between each object. This leads to the limitation of object identification within the list of data. The proposed algorithm was developed as part of a method for finding the Abstract Cellular Complex of an object. The volumes (whether closed or open) of an object are determined from the input set of faces. Each object is then extracted according to its manifold. This algorithm can identify every volume and extract them from the set of given data when the object(s) represented by the data have a genus of 0.

Recent years have seen a thriving development of the World Wide Web as the most visible social media which enables people to share opinions, experiences and expertise with each other across the world. People now get involved in many different social networks simultaneously, which are often large intricate web of connections among the massive entities they are made of As a result, the challenge of collecting and analyzing large-scale data among social members has left most basic questions about the global composition and function of such networks largely unresolved: What is the essential organization of a social network? who are the influential individuals whose voice is echoed by others? To address these questions, this paper presents an algorithm called sketcher to discover and describe the overall backbone of a specific network. Experimental results on the American College Football, Scientific Collaboration, and Telecommunications Call networks show that sketcher can extract the essential composition of a social network both efficiently and intuitively.

The visualization of images with a large dynamic range is a difficult task and this is especially the case for gray-level images. In radiology departments, this will force radiologists to review medical images several times, since the images need to be visualized with several different contrast windows (transfer functions) in order for the full information content of each image to be seen. Previously suggested methods for handling this situation include various approaches using histogram equalization and other methods for processing the image data. However, none of these utilize the underlying human anatomy in the images to control the visualization and the fact that different transfer functions are often only relevant for disjoint anatomical regions. In this paper, we propose a method for using model-based local transfer functions. It allows the reviewing radiologist to apply multiple transfer functions simultaneously to a medical image volume. This provides the radiologist with a tool for making the review process more efficient, by allowing him/her to review more of the information in a medical image volume with a single visualization. The transfer functions are automatically assigned to different anatomically relevant regions, based upon a model registered to the volume to be visualized. The transfer functions can be either pre-defined or interactively changed by the radiologist during the review process. All of this is achieved without adding any unfamiliar aspects to the radiologist's normal work-flow, when reviewing medical image volumes.

Previous methods for computing the Gaussian and Mean curvatures of iso-surfaces of volume data sets have shown the utility of these surface properties in analysis and visualization of volume information. However, the previous symbolic method, while developing techniques using trivariate B-spline representations, is computationally expensive, which may prohibit its use in practical applications. This paper adapts that symbolic method and creates an efficient computational framework which significantly increases the speed. It applies an accurate symbolic computation structure to a trivariate B-spline representation and also uses a fast approximation method. Presented work is insensitive to aliasing and handles complicated models better because of the speedup.
