An increasing popularity of multichannel recordings from freely behaving animals and the need to develop a practical brain-machine interface has fuelled the development of miniature multichannel recording systems. Here we describe our prototype miniature 64-channel acquisition system that could be used for multichannel recordings in freely behaving monkeys or other large animals. The system's features include an high impedance input for neurophysiology electrodes, an integrated battery fed circuitry with a 64 low-noise multiplexed amplifiers array that permits the parallel recording of all channels, a 10-bit resolution ADC, an FPGA digital core for online processing and data transmission, a USB 2.0 link and a custom software for datavisualization and whole system control.

The Taverna workbench allows constructing highly complex analyses over life sciences data and computational resources. It provides access over 1000 of bioinformatic services, e.g., analysis algorithms for comparing genome sequences, and facilitates the construction of bioinformatic workflows. These workflows make tacit procedural bioinformatics explicit and as such lend themselves for being used in bioinformatics education. However, until now, no Taverna e-learning service exists. In this paper, we describe how Taverna can be used for learning and the services that need to be integrated in Taverna for that purpose. This includes a digital library of multimedia resources since multimedia, especially visualization, plays an important role in bioinformatics. Equally important is an intelligent educational service that automatically assembles learning activities and resources into a pedagogically coherent whole.

Our perceptive of the scientific datasets has largely relied on numerical and statistical analysis of data from experimental dimension and computer simulation result [4][14][11][12][13]. In particular, we consider a simulated 3D time-varying model of scientific datasets and examine the temporal correlation among datasets. Our goal is to contrive effective visual representations to assist scientists in ascertaining temporal correlation among intricate and apparently chaotic scientific datasets. We propose a hybrid application with combination of streamline, global and local color scale and opacity scheme for spatio-temporal collaborative depiction. We illustrated also few images that can offer an effective tool for visually mining 3D time-varying scientific datasets.

We present a complex, open source tool for detailed machine translation error analysis providing the user with automatic error detection and classification, several monolingual alignment algorithms as well as with training and test corpus browsing. The tool is the result of a merge of automatic error detection and classification of Hjerson (Popovic, 2011) and Addicter (Zeman et al., 2011) into the pipeline and web visualization of Addicter. It classifies errors into categories similar to those of Vilar et al. (2006), such as: morphological, reordering, missing words, extra words and lexical errors. The graphical user interface shows alignments in both training corpus and test data;the different classes of errors are colored. Also, the summary of errors can be displayed to provide an overall view of the MT system's weaknesses. The tool was developed in Linux, but it was tested on Windows too.

As a complement to model-based approaches for the analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data, methods of exploratory analysis offer interesting options. While unsupervised clustering techniques can be employed for the extraction of signal patterns and segmentation purposes, topographic mapping techniques such as the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and the Topographic Mapping for Proximity data (TMP) provide additionally a structured representation of the data. In this contribution we investigate the applicability of two recently proposed variants of these algorithms which make use of concepts from lion-Euclidean geometry for the analysis of fMRI data. Compared to standard methods, both approaches provide more freedom for the representation of complex relationships in low-dimensional mappings while they offer a convenient interface for the visualization and exploration of high-dimensional data sets. Based on data from fMRI experiments, the application of these techniques is discussed and the results are quantitatively evaluated by means of ROC statistics.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is now widely used for tracking a great variety of objects in spatio-temporal dimensions. In the field of urban management and analysis, personal RFID is a powerful tool for tracing both individual pedestrians and crowd dynamics. In this research, we have focused our attention on how public services can use RFID technology, especially from the viewpoint of attractive and real-time visualization. In a trial demonstration, we installed nine RFID-reader gates in an urban district and provided hundreds of passive RFID-tags to pedestrians. Using this basic RFID-infrastructure, we developed a public display service which visualized and reported urban activities in the style of a real-time weather map. A large display shows the density of people at each location by using geometric contour lines and virtual clouds. Accumulated data is automatically updated and the 'weather' map quickly changes as time passes. The weather-like visualization helps the user understand the dynamics, flows, and trends of crowds, and promotes intuitive forecasting of urban activity.

Discriminative feature extraction is one of the fundamental problems in pattern recognition and signal processing. It was recently proposed that maximizing the class prediction by neighboring samples in the transformed space is an effective objective for learning a low-dimensional linear embedding of labeled data. The associated methods, Neighborhood Component analysis (NCA) and Relevant Component analysis (RCA), have been proven to be useful preprocessing techniques for discriminative information visualization and classification. We point out here that NCA and RCA are prone to overfitting and therefore regularization is required. NCA and RCA's failure for high-dimensional data is demonstrated in this paper by experiments in facial image processing. We also propose to incorporate a Gaussian prior into the NCA objective and obtain the Regularized Neighborhood Component analysis (RNCA). The empirical results show that the generalization can be significantly enhanced by using the proposed regularization method.

This paper focuses on the creative aspects of collaboration and proposes a support system consisting of a method for analyzing ideas created by designers during collaborative design projects and a method for visualizing interactive communication processes among designers in order to enhance designers' creativity. The analytical method analyses created ideas using DEA (data Envelopment analysis) and reveals characteristics and overall effectiveness of each idea, relationships between ideas from the various viewpoints and potentially fruitful directions for improvement of created ideas or exploration of new ideas. By following these indications, designers can explore more sophisticated ideas efficiently and effectively. Whereas, the visualization method that was originally developed in our previous works makes interactive communication processes among designers visible from the two viewpoints: the flow of its process and the relationships between design goals and created ideas. Using this method, designers can engage in more active discussions, share idea exploration spaces and explore a wider range of ideas. In addition, we also develop a computerized support system to enable smooth operation of above two methods and conduct the case study using the computerized support system in order to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed support system.
