As the demand for high-fidelity simulations of time-accurate flow fields has increased, it has become necessary to develop methods for quickly analyzing features and extracting results without significantly increasing post-processing time or data storage. In response, a suite of parallel Turbomachinery post- and co-processing and visualization tools are under development. The result has been a streamlined process for the visualization of massive data sets utilizing available computer power to distribute memory and processor requirements. As a case study, this process has been applied to a high-resolution, quarter annulus simulation of a compressor simulated with TURBO on 912 supercomputer processors. Interactive visualization of features such as isosurfaces was carried out on 23 to 88 commodity processors, demonstrating application scalability and viability for use on PC Linux clusters. This also allowed continuity of the investigation as it was possible to work with the entire simulated domain at once with rotor and stator rows properly aligned, rather than one passage at a time. This posed a new challenge, as standard sized monitors no longer were able to fit the full dataset and convey meaningful levels of detail. High-resolution visualization, images, and movies have now become an important and standard part of the analysis process. Control has also been passed to a 5 degree-of-freedom device that allows intuitive control and interaction of 3-D data sets.

TexPlorer is an integrated system for exploring and analyzing large amounts of text documents. The data processing modules of TexPlorer consist of named entity extraction, entity relation extraction, hierarchical clustering, and text summarization tools. Using a timeline tool, tree-view, table-view, and concept maps, TexPlorer provides an analytical interface for exploring a set of text documents from different perspectives and allows users to explore vast amount of text documents efficiently.

This paper describes TabuVis, a light weight visual analytics system that provides a flexible, customizable and effective visualization for multidimensional data. A key aspect of visual analytics of data with multiple attributes is the quality and appropriateness of the analytical platforms whose presentation can be adjusted via domain experts. A commercial-free and comprehensive prototype was developed that used scatter-plot approach to support the visual analytics process. Our system consists of multiple components enabling the complete analysis process, including data processing, automatic marks, interactive visualization and control. We demonstrate the effectiveness of TabuVis with two case studies using medical and Oscars data sets. © 2012 ACM.

Amino acids (AAs) pairs in protein sheets structures have turned out to be important in studying protein tertiary structures and protein folding pathways. Most existing software tools are sophisticated in visualizing and manipulating protein 3-D structures. However, these tools are inconvenient to retrieve strands alignment information and are not so intuitive to illustrate the AAs pairs on strands. In the present study, we present a new software toolkit, called StrandPairsViewer, which can read protein structures data in PDB file and extract AAs pairs as well as peptide chain sequences, sheet structures and strand alignments. It can demonstrate AAs pairs in an intuitive color text that can be pasted into other word-processing software for further editing. The toolkit also supports aligning coding nucleic acid sequences along with the paired strands in color for finding additional folding information from nucleic acids. StrandPairsViewer also enables to make statistical analysis on AAs pairs, as well as manage user's dataset effectively. The proposed toolkit has a convenient and intuitive interface that is potentially helpful and may assist in the protein structures and protein folding study, as a useful complement to the existing visualization tools for protein 3-D structures. A micro-resolution particle image velocimetry (micro-PIV) technique for flow visualization in microspace is presented here. The micro-PIV system was constructed through adding an epi-fluorescence microscope, improving the light source and choosing suitable tracing particle. According to smaller characteristic length of the flow in microscale and higher precision prolepsis, an image process technique based on cross correlation algorithm was conducted. To eliminate the main error caused by Brown motion of tracer particle, an approach by averaging the velocities of the ensemble particles in same interrogation plot was brought forward. Micro-PIV measure-ments of three typical flows (in a micromixer, near barriers and in a micro-jet) were carried out. The experimental results show that the micro-PIV system is suitable to both steady and unsteady flow in microscale. It is helpful to design micro-devices and analysis on data collected from such micro-devices. Copyright © 2007 by ASME.

One of the threatening trends of health to the youth in recent years has been the metabolic syndrome. Many associate this syndrome to how big the fatty tissue around the belly is. Self-organizing maps (SOM) can be viewed as a visualization tool that projects high-dimensional dataset onto a two-dimensional plane making the complexity of the data be simplified and in the process disclose much of the hidden details for easy analyzes, clustering and visualization. This paper focuses on the analysis, visualization and prediction of the syndrome trends using both spherical and Torus SOM with a view to diagnose its trends, inter-relate other risk factors as well as evaluating the responses obtained from the two approaches of SOM.

A description of the design parameters for a scaled RF environment is presented. This scaled RF environment was developed for purposes of simulating and investigating multipath phenomena in urban environments. A number of experiments were conducted with this scaled urban environment including a series of tests with eight spatially distributed receivers and one transmitter. Details with regard to the instrumentation system along with the measurement philosophy are provided. The primary focus of this paper is a detailed treatment of data analysis and exploitation techniques for the multipath data generated by this scaled RF environment. A portion of the material on multipath data analysis and exploitation is focused on developing techniques for identifying a optimum placement of receiver pairs for purposes of maximizing information content on a embedded target. In other words, data from the eight distributed receiver locations are analyzed and techniques are presented that allow for the selection of receiver pairs that provide the most information on targets that are embedded within the multipath environment. The last section of the paper discusses visualization and pseudo-imaging techniques for targets embedded in multipath environments.

The development of hardware and software is not sufficient to meet the real-time visualization requirements of large scale 3D City Models. How to adaptively coordinate the speed and quality of rendering according to the data volume and hardware/software environment is therefore a critical issue. This paper proposes an algorithm which predicts the rendering time according to the features of 3D City Models at first, and then to calculate the object importance value based on the mathematical model which considers the indicators of each object: location, distance, visibility and semantics, and finally to select the object set to be rendered by a fast recursive algorithm. There are five factors selected to test their influence on rendering time: triangle number, vertex number, texture number, screen pixel number, and the texture image size. According to multivariate statistical theory, experimental results prove that both geometry and texture data size are significant for rendering time of 3D City Models. A typical 3D building group models are employed for experimental analysis. The results show that the method introduced in this paper is accurate to predict the time of rendering 3D models with detailed texture. The adaptive rendering performance is also significantly improved.

Numerous methods have been developed over the past two decades that model species' ecological niches. These methods can generally be described as finding a correlation between where a species is found with a set of environmental parameters. The resulting models, however, are generally in the form of predictive maps that vary wildly in how transparent they are to evaluation and scrutiny. Herein, we propose a tool for visualizing species' modeled ecological niches called ecological fingerprinting. This method uses the distributional models from a predictive algorithm and projects them into a visualization matrix. The resulting matrices mimic the general appearance of sequenced DNA and facilitate the ecological comparison across many species that was not previously possible. We demonstrate our new method in the phyloclimatic analysis of the South American beetle genus Nordus.

This paper presents a face recognition technique with two techniques: random projection (RP) and Robust linear Discriminant analysis Model (RDM). ROM is an enhanced version of Fisher's Linear Discriminant with energy-adaptive regularization criteria. It is able to yield better discrimination performance. Same as Fisher's Linear Discriminant, it also faces the singularity problem of within-class scatter. Thus, a dimensionality reduction technique, such as Principal Component Analsys (PCA), is needed to deal with this problem. In this paper, RP is used as an alternative to PCA in RDM in the application of face recognition. Unlike PCA, RP is training data independent and the random subspace computation is relatively simple. The experimental results illustrate that the proposed algorithm is able to attain better recognition performance (error rate is approximately 5% lower) compared to Fisherfaces.
