Rapid growth of the amount of genome sequence data requires enhancing exploratory analysis tools, with analysis being performed in a fast and robust manner Users need data representations serving different purposes: from seeing overall structure and data coverage to evolutionary processes during a particular season. Our approach to the problem is in constructing hierarchies of data representations, and providing users with representations adaptable to specific goals. It can be done efficiently because the structure of a typical influenza dataset is characterized by low estimated values of the Kolmogorov (box) dimension. Multiscale methodologies allow interactive visual representation of the dataset and accelerate computations by importance sampling. Our tree visualization approach is based on a subtree aggregation with subscale resolution. It allows interactive refinements and coarsening of subtree views. For importance sampling large influenza datasets, we construct sets of well-scattered points (epsilon-nets). While a tree build for a global sample provides a coarse-level representation of the whole dataset, it can be complemented by trees showing more details in chosen areas. To reflect both global dataset structure and local details correctly, we perform local refinement gradually, using a multiscale hierarchy of epsilon-nets. Our hierarchical representations allow fast metadata searching.

A 3D visual analysis tool has been developed to add value to the SANDF's growing Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) System of Systems simulation capability. A time based XML interface between the simulation and analysis tool, via a TCP connection or a log file, allows individual simulation objects to be wholly updated or partially modified. Live pause and review of the simulation action is supported by employing data key frames and compressed XML for enhanced performance. Art innovative configurable filter tree allows visual clutter to be reduced as required and an open source scene graph (OpenSceneGraph) manages the 3D scene representation and rendering. A visualisation capability is developed for the effective presentation of the dynamic air defence system behaviour, system state transitions and inter-system communication. The visual analysis tool has successfully been applied in support of system performance experiments, tactical doctrine development and simulation support during training and live field exercises. The 3D visualisation resulted in improved situational awareness during experiment analysis, in increased involvement of the SANDF in experiment analysis and in improved credibility of analysis results presented during live or after action visual feedback sessions.

A timing chain drive transfers motion from the engine's crankshaft to the camshaft that operates the valves. The design process of timing chain drives involves computer simulation of many design variants in order to find an optimum. Most of the simulation results can be represented as families of function graphs (data series). Previously, the analysis of those results was based on static 2D diagrams and animated 3D visualizations. They were suitable for the detailed analysis of a few simulation variants, but not for the comparison of many cases. In this paper we propose a new approach to the analysis based on coordinated linked views and advanced brushing features. Our proposed method supports the interactive analysis of many design variants. We introduce a novel view, called segmented curve view, which can display distributions in families of function graphs. The segmented curve view combines individual function graphs where for a fixed value of the independent variable, a bar extends from minimum to maximum values across the family of function graphs. Each bar is divided into segments (bins) with a color that represents the number of function graphs with the value in that segment. In the case study, we demonstrate that the new view combined with "traditional" views provides a strong support for the interactive visual exploration and analysis of a real world timing chain design problem.

visualization systems traditionally focus on graphical representation of information. They tend not to provide integrated analytical services that could aid users in tackling complex knowledge discovery tasks. Users' exploration in such environments is usually impeded due to several problems: 1) valuable information is hard to discover when too much data is visualized on the screen;2) Users have to manage and organize their discoveries off line, because no systematic discovery management mechanism exists;3) their discoveries based on visual exploration alone may lack accuracy;4) and they have no convenient access to the important knowledge learned by other users. To tackle these problems, it has been recognized that analytical tools must be introduced into visualization systems. In this paper, we present a novel analysis-guided exploration system, called the Nugget Management System (NMS). It leverages the collaborative effort of human comprehensibility and machine computations to facilitate users' visual exploration processes. Specifically, NMS first extracts the valuable information (nuggets) hidden in datasets based on the interests of users. Given that similar nuggets may be re-discovered by different users, NMS consolidates the nugget candidate set by clustering based on their semantic similarity. To solve the problem of inaccurate discoveries, localized data mining techniques are applied to refine the nuggets to best represent the captured patterns in datasets. Lastly, the resulting well-organized nugget pool is used to guide users' exploration. To evaluate the effectiveness of NMS, we integrated NMS into Xmd-vTool, a freeware multivariate visualization system. User studies were performed to compare the users' efficiency and accuracy in finishing tasks on real datasets, with and without the help of NMS. Our user studies confirmed the effectiveness of NMS.

Agent systems are unique in their design and functionality;as such, they require unique techniques to pro-file, reverse engineer, test, and secure. The Agent Systems Reference Model (ASRM) provides a standard for the development and deployment of agent systems. To support the informed construction of the ASRM, we explored existing techniques for obtaining dynamic analysis data for agent frameworks, motivated the development of new techniques providing more concise and cleansed data, and identified mappings of existing agent frameworks and systems to the ASRM. In this paper, we describe our experience and challenges in analyzing agent systems, and with using that data to construct a comprehensive reference model. © 2007 IADIS.

The ecoinformatics community recognizes that ecological synthesis across studies, space, and time will require new informatics tools and infrastructure. Recent advances have been encouraging, but many problems still face ecologists who manage their own datasets, prepare data for archiving, and search data stores for synthetic research. In this paper, we describe how work by the Canopy database Project (CDP) might enable use of database technology by field ecologists: increasing the quality of database design, improving data validation, and providing structural and semantic metadata - all of which might improve the quality of data archives and thereby help drive ecological synthesis. The CDP has experimented with conceptual components for database design, templates, to address information technology issues facing ecologists. Templates represent forest structures and observational measurements on these structures. using our software, researchers select templates to represent their study's data and can generate normalized relational databases. information hidden in those databases is used by ancillary tools, including data intake forms and simple data validation, data visualization, and metadata export. The primary question we address in this paper is, which templates are the right templates. We argue for defining simple templates (with relatively few attributes) that describe the domain's major entities, and for coupling those with focused and flexible observation templates. We present a conceptual model for the observation data type, and show how we have implemented the model as an observation entity in the dataBank database designer and generator. We show how our visualization tool CanopyView exploits metadata made explicit by dataBank to help scientists with analysis and synthesis. The performability of disk arrays systems has been studied before. However, in the case of imprecise data, a fuzzy model can be the base for the performability analysis. This paper presents a performability analysis of an MSExchange-like e-mail server. The analysis is based on a Markov Reward model. The performability analysis is accomplished through the use of fuzzy arithmetic. Unlike traditional Markov Chains, Fuzzy Markov Chains can successfully handle uncertain, imprecise probabilities. In cases where the failure rates, repair rates, or the workload parameters are uncertain, Markov Chains enhanced with fuzzy arithmetic provide means for comprehensive predictive performability analysis of a system. This performability analysis provides a valuable guideline regarding required resources such as the number of mailboxes, and therefore, the number of users the mail server can support with regards to the reliability and performance of the disk array used by the mail server. The fuzzy arithmetic helps in better visualization and estimation of the range of number of users the mail server is capable of servicing over long periods of time.

This paper presented a case study of how to integrate virtual reality (VR) technology with geographical information system (GIS) for the simulating the soil erosion process in Dong hen reservoir of Fujian province, China. The research work was divided into three parts: (1) building a three dimension simulated environment of the whole reservoir area with remotely sensed image SPOT5 and digital elevation model (DEM) driven from contour relief map, and (2) modeling the soil erosion process and visualizing the dynamic process on a computer, and (3) predicting, the father evolution of erosion process via changing the affecting factors and visualizing the future scenario the reservoir area. After introducing the profile of research site, we presented simulating reservoir project which based on the VRGIS is bringing forward. And the spatial information visualization of reservoir area is also implemented. Take the Dongzhen reservoir of Fujian province as the typical case, the environment condition and basin status around the reservoir area is simulate for display based on the VRGIS technology, the 3d simulation scene of soil and water erosion status and dam is build by the project of water and soil conservation Simultaneity. Through this method, combined the integration of flood analysis feature and 3D spatial, using the special function of GIS in spatial data processing and analysis, the unite of data and graph of monitor and predict system of water and soil erosion is also realized, the scientific characteristic of monitor and prediction of water and soil erosion is also strengthened, provide a reliable information source for reducing the harm of water and soil erosion.

Object-oriented analysis with UML is an effective process for software development. However, the process closely depends on workmanship and experience of software engineers. In order to mitigate this problem, a precedence effort, scenario-based visual analysis, has been proposed. The technique visualizes a customer's domain, thus it enables requirement analyzers and customers to communicate smoothly. The customers themselves can schematize their workflows with the technique. Consequently, the analyzers and customers can easily and exactly derive use case models via the collaborative works. Thus, this paper proposes a technique to advance the analysis further, inheriting such advantages. The extended technique can analyze initial system behavior specifications. The customers can also join and understand system behavior analysis, thus they can easily decide on specifications for developing systems.

Many research efforts using anatomical image analysis have as their goal to identify biologically relevant objects present within the image data, to provide a means to quantitatively analyze these objects, to compare the distribution of those objects to other features, and finally to properly annotate the objects so as to be able share this analysis in an integrated informatics framework. The neuroinformatics tools designed to achieve these ends have been developed in a fragmented manner with each resource developing access to unique data sets and analytical capabilities, Their integration would enrich the neuroinformatic network enabling queries and analysis across a number of resources. A central objective of the Biomedical Informatics Research Network (BIRN) is to achieve this integration and we present here a demonstration of how two such tools - the Neuro Terrain Atlas/NetOStat client and the SMART Atlas - can expose their functionality via a re-usable interface, so as to promote interoperation of tools and data.
