This paper addresses the issue of precisely locating boundaries of water masses in the oceanic water mass analysis. A novel computational topology-based solution is presented. First, employing the concept of multidimensional transfer functions, the sampled data of temperature and salinity in investigated area are transformed into a feature function of water masses that represents the variation ratio distribution of temperature and salinity on the domain. Then, a 2-manifold Morse-Smale decomposition over this domain is made to produce boundaries among the different water masses automatically. The results of some comparative experiments verified effectiveness and objectivity of the presented method, and its much better accuracy and efficiency.

Driven by soil, variety, weather and management databases and integrating process-based growth simulation model, morphological model and visualization model, a model-based digital and visual wheat growth system (MDVWGS) was developed using component-based software and visualization techniques. The system was programmed by the Net framework with the language of C# and CsGL Library was used for realizing 2D and 3D graphics application and visualization. The implemented system could be used for predicting growth processes and visualizing morphological architecture of wheat plant under various environments, genotypes and management strategies, and has the functions as data management, dynamic simulation, strategy evaluation, real-time prediction, temporal and spatial analysis,visualization output, expert consultation and system help. The MDVWGS should be useful for construction and application of digital farming system and provide a precise and scientific tool for cultivar design, cultural regulation and productivity evaluation under different growing conditions.

The continuing advancement of computed tomography (CT) technology has improved the analysis and visualization of tumor data. As imaging technology continues to accommodate the need for high quality medical image data, this encourages the research for more efficient ways of extracting crucial information from these vast amounts of data. A new segmentation method using a fuzzy rule based system to segment tumors in a three-dimensional CT data has been developed. To initialize the segmentation process, the user selects the region of interest (ROI) within the tumor in the first image of the CT study set. Using the ROI's spatial and intensity properties, fuzzy inputs are generated for use in the fuzzy inference system. From a set of predefined fuzzy rules, the system generates a defuzzified output for every pixel in tern-is of similarity to the object. Pixels with the highest similarity values are selected to be the tumor. This process is repeated for every subsequent slice in the CT set, and the segmented region from the previous slice is used as the ROI for the current slice. This creates a propagation of information from the previous slices, to be used to segment the current slice. The membership functions used during the fuzzification and defuzzification processes are adaptive to the changes in the size and pixel intensities of the current ROI. The proposed method is highly customizable to suit different needs of a user, requiring information from only a single two-dimensional image. Implementing the fuzzy segmentation on two distinct CT sets, the fuzzy segmentation algorithm was able to successfully extract the tumor from the CT image data. Based on the results statistics, the developed segmentation technique is approximately 96% accurate when compared to the results of manual segmentations performed.

This paper presents an approach to extracting the separation surfaces from periodic 2D time-dependent vector fields based on a recently introduced path line oriented topology. This topology is based on critical path lines which repeat the same spatial cycle per time period. Around those path lines there are areas of similar asymptotic flow behavior (basins) which are captured by a 2D Poincare map as a discrete dynamical system. Due to pseudo discontinuities in this map and the discrete integration scheme, separatrices between the basins can't be obtained as integral curves. Instead we choose a point-wise approach to segment the Poincare map and apply image analysis algorithms to extract the 2D separation curves. Starting from those curves we integrate separation surfaces which partition the periodic 2D time-dependent vector field into areas of similar path line behavior. We apply our approach to a number of data sets to demonstrate its utility.

A new trace analysis environment provides deeper insight into the client/server behavior and visualizes events of both process types. We investigate the influence of making independent vs. collective calls together with access to contiguous and non-contiguous data regions in our MPI-IO program. Combined client and server traces exhibit reasons for observed I/O performance.
