In this paper, we introduce NewsLab, an exploratory visualization approach for the analysis of large scale broadcast news video collections containing many thousands of news stories over extended periods of time. A river metaphor is used to depict the thematic changes of the news over time. An interactive lens metaphor allows the playback of fine-grained video segments selected through the river overview. Multi-resolution navigation is supported via a hierarchical time structure as well as a hierarchical theme structure. Themes can be explored hierarchically according to their thematic structure, or in an unstructured fashion using various ranking criteria. A rich set of interactions such as filtering, drill-down/roll-up navigation, history animation, and keyword based search are also provided. Our case studies show how this set of tools can be used to find emerging topics in the news, compare different broadcasters, or mine the news for topics of interest.

The strength of GIS is in providing a rich data infrastructure for combining disparate data in meaningful ways by using a spatial arrangement (e.g., proximity). As a toolbox, a GIS allows planners to perform spatial analysis using geo-processing functions such as map overlay, connectivity measurements or thematic map coloring. Although, this makes effective the geographic visualization of individual variables, complex multi-variate dependencies are easily overlooked. The required step to take GIS beyond a tool for automating cartography is to incorporate the ability of analyzing and condensing a large number of geo-referenced variables into a single forecast or score. This is where data mining promises great potential benefits and the reason why there is such a hand-in-glove fit between GIS and data mining. Following the mainstream of this research, we propose to integrate GIS and data mining functionality in a closely coupled open and extensible GIS architecture. This is done by resorting to emerging spatial data mining technology that deals with the substantial complexity added from the spatial dimension. We illustrate an example of topographic map interpretation where resorting to data mining facilities to discover both operational definitions of morphologies characterizing the landscape (i.e., spatial classification rules) and frequent spatial interactions of two or more spatially-referred objects (i.e., spatial association rules). In both cases, discovered patterns correspond to what geographers, geologists and town planners are interested in while interpreting a map, although they are never explicitly represented in topographic maps or in a GIS-model.
In Knowledge engineering, synthesized information has often an evolving and relational form. Information representation using graphs may ease data interpretation for non-expert users. However this graph may be complex...

A description of the design parameters for a scaled RF environment is presented. This scaled RF environment was developed for purposes of simulating and investigating multipath phenomena in urban environments. A number of experiments were conducted with this scaled urban environment including a series of tests with eight spatially distributed receivers and one transmitter. Details with regard to the instrumentation system along with the measurement philosophy are provided. The primary focus of this paper is a detailed treatment of dataanalysis and exploitation techniques for the multipath data generated by this scaled RF environment. A portion of the material on multipath dataanalysis and exploitation is focused on developing techniques for identifying a optimum placement of receiver pairs for purposes of maximizing information content on a embedded target. In other words, data from the eight distributed receiver locations are analyzed and techniques are presented that allow for the selection of receiver pairs that provide the most information on targets that are embedded within the multipath environment. The last section of the paper discusses visualization and pseudo-imaging techniques for targets embedded in multipath environments.

As the demand for high-fidelity simulations of time-accurate flow fields has increased, it has become necessary to develop methods for quickly analyzing features and extracting results without significantly increasing post-processing time or data storage. In response, a suite of parallel Turbomachinery post- and co-processing and visualization tools are under development. The result has been a streamlined process for the visualization of massive data sets utilizing available computer power to distribute memory and processor requirements. As a case study, this process has been applied to a high-resolution, quarter annulus simulation of a compressor simulated with TURBO on 912 supercomputer processors. Interactive visualization of features such as isosurfaces was carried out on 23 to 88 commodity processors, demonstrating application scalability and viability for use on PC Linux clusters. This also allowed continuity of the investigation as it was possible to work with the entire simulated domain at once with rotor and stator rows properly aligned, rather than one passage at a time. This posed a new challenge, as standard sized monitors no longer were able to fit the full dataset and convey meaningful levels of detail. High-resolution visualization, images, and movies have now become an important and standard part of the analysis process. Control has also been passed to a 5 degree-of-freedom device that allows intuitive control and interaction of 3-D data sets.

To facilitate decision making tasks it is necessary to be able to "see" the situation. An enormous array of intelligence gathering, database, and sensor sources of information are available. Methods for visualizing the information must be established and information presented in such a way that human attention is captured and maintained on the most critical aspects of the information. visualizations need to adapt to the changing circumstances to show the most relevant information at that time. We are developing a system called Holistic analysis, visualization, & Characterization Assessment Tool (HAVCAT) that uses intelligent agents that interact with the user to provide the correct information at the right time. This cutting edge system will enable visualization researchers to investigate techniques for adjusting visualizations based on user performance HAVCAT will employ domain ontologies to determine relationships within the data. The HAVCAT evidence reasoning agent distills the data and extracts the most pertinent actions or consequences. This paper describes the HAVCAT concepts and also research issues related to development of HAVCAT and techniques for directing user attention.
