This paper describes current work in the evolution of open standards for 3D graphics for Humanoid Animation (H-Anim). It builds on previous work to encompass plausible humanoids, humanoid behaviors and methodologies for composition with interchangeable and blended behaviors. We present an overview of the standardization activities for H-Anim, including a proposed extension for the H-Anim Specification which allows for interchangeable actors and dynamic behaviors. We demonstrate a standards-based approach to the complex work flow and data extraction for 3D optical motion tracking systems. We describe how to archive, annotate and transform the whole body and segmented performance so that they can be used more widely and with less effort. The approach is compressible, streamable, sealeable, repeatable and suitable for large-scale training and analysis, entertainment and games. Often, X3D and VRML simulations lack the realistic representation of humans. They lack the direct flexibility of control required to build small, but meaningful, task-oriented training scenarios like deploying force protection assets in a busy commercial port. While high-value assets, defensive and offensive agents can be easily and realistically modeled using discreet event simulations, that realism is diminished by the lack of humanoid representations. The visualization is not as engaging and the training not as immersive. Including a rich set of characters with composable and swappable behaviors demonstrating intent of the agent entity heightens both the sense of realism and immersion. Deriving these behaviors is difficult and translating the data into custom applications is craftwork. We propose a standard, archival data format so that captured behaviors can be repurposed and reused, following the SAVAGE approach. This data format will include behavior information and skeletal information such that they can be retargeted and repurposed with a minimum of effort.

The visualization of a cocitation network is a useful technique for information scientists. The technique will help to illustrate the intellectual structure of a given knowledge domain. We hope our results will improve on current tools with regard to user interface interactivity and scale better for larger data sets. We developed a tool, with the visualizing cocitation network in mind, by using an open-sourced toolkit for interactive information visualization to address some of these inadequacies. This tool exhibits cocitation graphs with latent visual cues and allows direct interaction with the visualized graphs. We demonstrated the visualized effects of this tool and complemented the results with its domain content analysis in a case study.

The Web Interface for Telescience (WITS) provides downlink data visualization and uplink activity planning for multiple Mars lander and rover missions. WITS also provides a ground data system (CDS) for terrestrial rover operations. The architecture of the WITS system that enables its multi-mission use is described. WITS has been used as the GDS for the Rocky7, FIDO, and Rocky8 rovers at JPL. It was used for command sequence generation for the Mars Polar Lander mission robotic arm and robotic arm camera and will be used for science activity planning in the 2003 Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission. It is also planned for use in the 2007 Phoenix Mars lander mission and 2009 Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover mission. WITS is currently being integrated with the Mission data System (MDS) for use in the MSL mission and with the Coupled Layer Architecture for Robotic Autonomy (CLARAty) system for use as the GDS for terrestrial technology development landers and rovers.

This work describes two pixel-based paradigms for visual financial time series data analysis that allow analyzing assets in overview and in detail, and offer improved insights into the characteristics of assets compared to traditional visualization methods. We contribute a two-dimensional color coding scheme for inter-Zintra-asset analysis that extends the two paradigms and supports the discovery of significant characteristics of assets, such as atypical " against-the-market" -behavior inform of exceptional stability in case of whole market losses, or the discovery of assets in a portfolio that - while still being profitable - notably underperform the market median. We apply our techniques on real world data sets, and focus on assets of the banks of Switzerland.

Motivation - In some situations EID's high-level visual design principles can be difficult to apply. A more concrete design methodology would make the framework more accessible for interface designers. Research approach - Graphics research was reviewed across a number of fields. The Visualisation Reference Model was identified as a useful model that could be used alongside EID's visual design principles. A case study is used to demonstrate this approach. Findings/Design - Supplementing a work domain analysis with a task analysis can reveal how information requirements are used. This allows data transformations and visual mapping to be carried out to generate visual components in an ecological interface design. Take away message - Task analysis not only improves the quality of our information requirements, it can also inform the visual design process.

In human learning, it is common to use multiple sources of information jointly. However, most existing feature learning approaches learn from only a single task. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-task deep network to learn generalizable high-level visual representations. Since multitask learning requires annotations for multiple properties of the same training instance, we look to synthetic images to train our network. To overcome the domain difference between real and synthetic data, we employ an unsupervised feature space domain adaptation method based on adversarial learning. Given an input synthetic RGB image, our network simultaneously predicts its surface normal, depth, and instance contour, while also minimizing the feature space domain differences between real and synthetic data. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate that our network learns more transferable representations compared to single-task baselines. Our learned representation produces state-of-the-art transfer learning results on PASCAL VOC 2007 classification and 2012 detection.

As the complexity of application system for enterprises, an important challenge is to dynamically schedule and integrate the heterogeneous and distributed services or activities to work cooperatively and efficiently. An effective technology to resolve the problem is grid service. A grid service built on both grid computing and web services technologies is an extended Web service. An application system for enterprises is a grid service composition that consists of a collection of grid services related by data and control flow. Therefore, there is a need for modeling and analyzing techniques and tools for reliable and effective grid service composition. The Petri net based method is an idea approach. In this paper, we use a colored dynamic timed Petri net (CDTPN) to model the grid service composition. The definition of CDTPN for grid service and an algorithm to construct a composite service are proposed. We give a definition of reachable service graph and an algorithm for constructing the reachable service graph of CDTPN. Finally, we discuss the correctness and effectiveness of the grid service composition by analyzing the reachable service graph.

The objective presented in this paper is here to provide basic knowledge on the systems of biphasic cooling in mini and microchannels during hyper and microgravity. The experimental activities are performed in the frame of the MAP Boiling project founded by ESA. The main aspect of this paper is to present the use of inverse methods to estimate local flow boiling heat transfers coefficient in minichannels. To observe the influence of gravity level on the fluid flow and to take data measurements, an experimental setup is designed with two identical channels;one for the visualization and the other one for the acquisition of data. These two devices enable us to study the influence of gravity on the temperatures and pressures measurements. The two minichannels are modeled as a rectangular rod made up of three materials;a layer of polycarbonate (R) (lambda=0,2 W.m(-1).K-1) used as insulator, a cement rod (lambda=0,83 W.m(-1).K-1) instrumented with 21 K-type thermocouples and in the middle a layer of inconel (R) (lambda=10,8 W.m(-1).K-1) in which the minichannel is engraved. Pressures and temperatures measurements are carried out simultaneously at various levels of the minichannel. Above the channel, we have a set of temperatures and pressures gauges and inside the cement rod, 5 heating wires providing a power of I I W. The K-type thermocouples sensors enable us to acquire the temperature in various locations (x, y and z) of the device. With these temperatures and the knowledge of the boundary conditions, we are able to solve the problem using inverse methods and to obtain local heat flux and local surface temperatures on several locations. All the results on hydrodynamics and pressure drop will be provided in a second paper in the same congress.

Algorithm visualization is a widely-used tool for teaching data structures and algorithms. Spatial data algorithms are algorithms that are designed to process multidimensional data. This work introduces a spatial data extension to the successful TRAKLA2 learning environment, which includes automatically assessed visual algorithm simulation exercises. First impressions on using the visualizations in teaching are also described.
