A novel asynchronous collaborative visualization system for the chemical sciences has been created as a mash-up between an interactive visualization program and a wiki. The system supports features such as annotation, information foraging, and visualization session playback. Building the system from predefined disparate components was a simple process. Yet, as an integrated whole, the system displays an unexpected synergy beyond the sum of its parts.

Summary form only given. Cell biological systems are highly complex. They consist of many heterogeneously acting and interacting subsystems with various patterns of behavior, interaction and composition. To model and simulate these processes, new formalisms and algorithms are required which can represent the dynamic, multi-level structure. At this point new visualization techniques can serve for facilitating the understanding of models and data as well as for establishing and maintaining the communication with experts from other research fields like biology and medicine. To take a closer look at these potential applications we introduce a schema that outlines the iterative workflow from the wet lab experiments to the simulation model and its execution in a simulator. It moreover integrates comprehensive visual support for the analysis of experiments, the generation and analysis of the model, the analysis of simulation data, and the presentation of results to non-experts. First application-specific visualization techniques are presented as examples.

Models of real world systems are being increasingly generated from data that describes the behaviour of systems. data mining techniques, such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), generate models almost independently and deliver accurate models in a very short time. These models (sometimes called black box models) have complex internal structures that are difficult to interpret and we have very limited information about the credibility of their output. A model can be trusted just for certain configurations of input variables, but it is hard to determine which output is based on training data and which is random. In this paper, we present visualization techniques for exploration of models. Primary goal is to consider the behavior of the model in the neighborhood of the data vectors. The next goal is to estimate and locate the ranges in input space where the models are credible. We have developed visualization techniques both for regression and classification problems. Finally, we present an algorithm that is able to automatically locate the most interesting visualizations in the vast multidimensional space of input variables.

When studying a complex process, a design of experiments (DOE) using discrete-event simulation, is a powerful tool to determine key factors and results. A DOE is a road map for data generation and analysis that is methodical, efficient, and meaningful. This presentation highlights two manufacturing simulation case studies with emphasis on the process for creating and assessing the DOEs. DOE evolution is discussed, as well as the difference between a DOE and a DOE model. Tips and tricks for setup, visualization, and graphing are also highlighted.

This paper reports a bibliometric analysis of evolving co-author networks. Using 5,009 articles covering the years 1993 to 2005 from Transactions D. (Information Systems) of the Institute of Electronics Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE), we attempt to compare the network characteristics for each year, the co-author network characteristics for the entire time span, and the four major components of the entire data set. Finally, we analyze each of these in contrast to extant co-authorship network data and find that the pattern of co-authorship within Information Systems does not change significantly over this time period.

Geovisualization (GeoViz) is an intrinsically complex process. The analyst needs to look at data from various perspectives and at various scales, from "seeing the whole" to "attending to particulars " (Andrienko and Andrienko 2006). The analyst is also supposed to "see in relation", i.e. make numerous comparisons. This inherent complexity is multiplied by the complexity of the data that is explored and analyzed. The complex, multivariate data structure and heterogeneous components of most contemporary datasets necessitate a combined use of multiple techniques and approaches. There is no single visualization method capable to show "the whole". The analyst has to decompose this whole into views, examine these views and then try to synthesize the whole picture from the partial views. Also, because of large data volumes, we must use methods capable of simultaneously providing an overall view and exposing various "particulars". Looking for "particulars" requires therefore different techniques than "seeing the whole". Some existing visualization tools such as GeoVista and CommonGIS have successfully demonstrated the advantage of multiple-linked views and the use of information visualization (InfoViz) methods such as Parallel Coordinates and Heat maps to explore spatial multivariate data. GeoViz tools support interactive visual representation and analysis of spatio-temporal data, enabling analysts to explore geospatial and multivariate data from multiple perspectives. GeoViz is differentiated from GIS because it focuses on exploratory visual analysis rather than the pre-defined mapping. GeoViz research focuses particular attention on integrating cartographic approaches with interactive visual representations from information visualization, analytical data dissemination and visual analytics.

In this paper we discuss the application of multiple linked views for advanced vortex investigation in flow data. Local feature detectors and additional measures integrate into an interactive flow feature detection system based on multiple linked views. We discuss how linking and brushing of derived feature information can lead to increased performance in interactive feature analysis. In a case study we demonstrate how the possibility to integrate the information of multiple detectors leads to sound understanding of vortex type features. Enhanced credibility and combined advantages of several detectors can be achieved by uniting the results of multiple feature detectors in multiple coordinated views.

DCE-MRI is a diagnostic method that can visualize neoangiogenic-induced vascular changes. Typically, the analysis of these data is time-consuming and the visualization of the quantitative information on tumor vasculature, derivable from DCE-MRI, is not easy and comfortable. In this study, we propose a method to accelerate computation and analysis of DCE-MRI data, while making easy to use the functional information obtained from model-based functional analysis.

In many application areas which deal with heterogeneous data sets temporal developments and topical relationships both play an important role. A number of visual representations have been developed which separately address each of these two aspects of the data. However, a simultaneous analysis of both aspects is also often required. In this paper we introduce an approach which utilizes a combination of visual representations, where some are targeting the temporal behaviour while others are focusing on topical relationships. The views are fused in the sense that they are tightly coupled with respect to the visualised data set, considered time interval, and user actions. The resulting user interface enables the user to simultaneously explore and discover patterns in both temporal and topical aspects of a heterogeneous data set. As a proof of concept a demo application was developed and applied for visualising temporal and topical patterns extracted from meeting recordings.

Traditionally, bioinformatics has been organized around the concepts of genes and gene products, typically proteins. Proteins are represented as sequences of amino acids and are analyzed against each other by alignment and similarity of their amino acids. However proteins contain subsequences that define their activity and mode of regulation. These subsequences are referred to as "domains" and "motifs". For understanding many aspects of gene function, gene interaction, and gene and organism evolution, there is an advantage to focusing analysis on the domain/motif level rather than on the gene level. Such analysis is inherently highly computationally intensive because of the exponential growth of the protein databases and the combinatorial number of ways in which domains and motifs interact with each other. Here we report, by means of a biological example, on our efforts to build a user-friendly environment for facilitating such analysis. The name of this environment is the MotifNetwork. The MotifNetwork is an integration effort to build a suite of biologically oriented and grid-enabled workflows for high throughput domain analysis of protein sequences. The workflow orchestration and enactment is handled with Taverna. [Oinn, 2004] The supporting grid-enabling services used to wrap and invoke the computational applications are implemented with the Generic Service Toolkit (GST) [Kandaswamy, 2006]. The ultimate results of this environment are data products, organized as matrices, and visualization files suitable for quick analysis. Detailed descriptions of data products from a representative biological example are presented. Lastly, some preliminary performance data are displayed including use of the workflow to determine the domain architecture of all proteins in a complete genome (the honeybee).
