Colon motility disorders are a very common problem. A precise diagnosis with current methods is almost unachievable. This makes it extremely difficult for the clinical experts to decide for the right intervention such as colon resection. The use of cine MRI for visualizing the colon motility is a very promising technique. In addition, if image segmentation and qualitative motion analysis provide the necessary tools, it could provide the appropriate diagnostic solution. In this work we defined necessary steps in the image processing workflow to gain valuable measurements for a computer aided diagnosis of colon motility disorders. For each step, we developed methods to deal with the dynamic image data. There is need for compensating the breathing motion since no respiratory gating could be used. We segment the colon using a graph cuts approach in 2D and 3D for further analysis and visualization. The analysis of the large bowel motility is done by tracking the extension of the colon during a propagating peristaltic wave. The main objective of this work is to extract a motion model to define a clinical index that can be used in diagnosis of large bowel motility dysfunction. We aim at the classification and localization of such pathologies.

Aesthetic seems currently under represented in most current data visualization evaluation methodologies. This paper investigates the results of an online survey of 285 participants, measuring both perceived aesthetic as well as the efficiency and effectiveness of retrieval tasks across a set of 11 different data visualization techniques. The data visualizations represent an identical hierarchical dataset, which has been normalized in terms of color, typography and layout balance. This study measured parameters such as speed of completion, accuracy rate, task abandonment and latency of erroneous response. Our findings demonstrate a correlation between latency in task abandonment and erroneous response time in relation to visualization's perceived aesthetic. These results support the need for an increased recognition for aesthetic in the typical evaluation process of data visualization techniques.

The task of exploring and analysing large quantities of communication network security data is difficult. Visualisation of the data should help the analyses and make data exploration faster and easier. This paper describes prototype software that visualises the alerts effectively and provides a simple presentation. The needs analysis of this prototype is based on the suggested needs of network security analyst's tasks as seen in the literature. The prototype software incorporates various projections of the alert data in 3-dimensional displays. Filtering, drill-down and playback of alerts at variable speed are incorporated to strengthen the analysis. We integrate a false alert classifier using classification tree algorithm to classify alerts into false and true alerts. Real-time visual observation is also included. We describe some example analyses to prove the usefulness of our prototype.

In recent years the benefits of fusing signatures extracted from large amounts of distributed and/or heterogeneous data sources have been largely documented in various problems ranging from biological protein function prediction to cyberspace monitoring. In spite of significant progress in information fusion research, there is still no formal theoretical framework for defining various types of information fusion systems, defining and analyzing relations among such types, and designing information fusion systems using a formal method approach. Consequently, fusion systems are often poorly understood, are less than optimal, and/or do not suit user needs. To start addressing these issues, we outline a formal human-centered fusion framework for reasoning about fusion strategies. Our approach relies on a new taxonomy for fusion strategies, an alternative definition of information fusion in terms of parameterized paths in signature related spaces, an algorithmic formalization of fusion strategies and a library of numeric and dynamic visual tools measuring the impact as well as the impact behavior of fusion strategies. Using a real case of intelligence analysis we demonstrate that the proposed framework enables end users to rapidly 1) develop and implement alternative fusion strategies, 2) understand the impact of each strategy, 3) compare the various strategies, and 4) perform the above steps without having to know the mathematical foundations of the framework. We also demonstrate that the human impact on a fusion system is critical in the sense that small changes in strategies do not necessarily correspond to small changes in results.

Inventory classification of stock-keeping units is typically achieved with ABC analysis accompanied with a diagram describing the distribution of dollar-usage values. Unfortunately, it fails to identify the interdependencies between the products, which may lead to alienating customers by ignoring the effect of assortments of choices. To remedy this problem, we propose new visualization and product interdependency identification methods. Experimental results in real-world scenarios for two warehouse datasets are included and analyzed.

data quality is an important topic for many fields because real-world data is rarely perfect. analysis conducted on data of variable quality can lead to inaccurate or incorrect results. To avoid this problem, researchers have introduced visual elements and attributes into traditional visualization displays to represent data quality information in conjunction with the original data. However, little work thus far has focused on creating an interactive interface to enable users to explicitly explore that data quality information. In this paper, we propose a framework for the linkage between data space and quality space for multivariate visualizations. Moreover, we introduce two novel techniques, quality brushing and quality-series animation, to help users with the exploration of this linkage. A visualization technique specifically designed for the quality space, called the quality map, is proposed as a means to help users create and manipulate quality brushes. We present some interesting case studies to show the effectiveness of our approaches.

In the context of medical image analysis, it is useful to study how effectively the renditions created through volume rendering depicts anatomical structures and how well features of anatomical structures can be discerned in order to make decisions. In this paper, we firstly analyze the roles of perception for volume visualization in order to get perceptual factors which affect the effectiveness of volume visualization. The perceptual analysis results are then used to design visualization tools to demonstrate their effects on visual perception and mental models. In this paper, we mainly focus on depicting two kinds of object structural relationships that are important for extracting and understanding structures of interest: topological relationships (e.g. inside/outside) and spatial positional relationships.

Time is an important data dimension with distinct characteristics that is common across many application domains. This demands specialized methods in order to support proper analysis and visualization to explore trends, patterns, and relationships in different kinds of time-oriented data. The human perceptual system is highly sophisticated and specifically suited to spot visual patterns. For this reason, visualization is successfully applied in aiding these tasks. But facing the huge volumes of data to be analyzed today, applying purely visual techniques is often not sufficient. Visual analytics systems aim to bridge this gap by combining both, interactive visualization and computational analysis. In this paper, we introduce a concept for designing visual analytics frameworks and tailored visual analytics systems for time and time-oriented data. We present a number of relevant design choices and illustrate our concept by example.

We present an interactive visualization method for the multivariate analysis of large and complex datasets, based on the layout of Karnaugh-Veitch-diagrams. Working on data categories, we additionally provide an interactive partitioning of value ranges of ordinal types. Multivariate dependencies manifest on the map in characteristic color patterns. These patterns are representations of subsets of the data or attributes which embody significant information. While the task of the user is to identify visual patterns of particular interest to him by clicking on the map, the software identifies a minimal representation of the corresponding subset and gives a visual feedback. Hence, user and machine cooperate on the basis of a strong visual coupling in short iterative cycles. During this process the trade-off between the accuracy and simplicity of a representation, which is crucial for any type of the building of analytical models, can be found in an effective way.

DCE-MRI is a diagnostic method that can visualize neoangiogenic-induced vascular changes. Typically, the analysis of these data is time-consuming and the visualization of the quantitative information on tumor vasculature, derivable from DCE-MRI, is not easy and comfortable. In this study, we propose a method to accelerate computation and analysis of DCE-MRI data, while making easy to use the functional information obtained from model-based functional analysis.
