New proteomic technologies have brought the hope of discovering novel early cancer-specific biomarkers in complex biological samples. Novel mass spectrometry (XIS) based technologies in particular, such as surface-enhanced laser desorption/ionisation time of flight (SELDI-TOF-MS), have shown promising results in recent years. To find new potential biomarkers and establish the patterns for detection of cancers, we proposed a novel method to analysis SELDI-TOF-MS using binary cross section imaging and energy curve technology. The proposed method with advantage of visualization is to mining local information adequately so as to discriminate cancer samples from non-cancer ones. Applying the procedure to MS data of proteomic analysis of serum from ovarian cancer patients and serum from cancer-free individuals in the Food and Drug Administration/National Cancer Institute Clinical Proteomics database, we find that there are outputs of the cancerous when the threshold is above 90 and M/Z is in the range 9362.3296-9747.2723, while outputs of the non-cancerous will appear when the threshold is 60 80 and M/Z is 243.4940-247.8824.

Industrial computed tomography (ICT) systems have widely applied in many important industrial areas for nondestructive testing (NDT) and non-destructive evaluate (NDE). A software system on 3D image visualization and analyzing for industrial CT is developed. This system is built on the frame that based on data flow model, and with the modules such as data I/O, data pre-processing, 3D visualization and data analyzing. It is includes the functions of complicated surface constructing, transparent volume rendering, reslicing, virtual endoscopy and 3D measuring. The system has been applied to several types of industrial CT, and the results indicate that it can clearly shows the 3D configuration and material information of tested object, which helps to analyze the object's status. The system improved the usefulness of industrial CT images and extended the functions of industrial CT.

Geovisualization (GeoViz) is an intrinsically complex process. The analyst needs to look at data from various perspectives and at various scales, from "seeing the whole" to "attending to particulars " (Andrienko and Andrienko 2006). The analyst is also supposed to "see in relation", i.e. make numerous comparisons. This inherent complexity is multiplied by the complexity of the data that is explored and analyzed. The complex, multivariate data structure and heterogeneous components of most contemporary datasets necessitate a combined use of multiple techniques and approaches. There is no single visualization method capable to show "the whole". The analyst has to decompose this whole into views, examine these views and then try to synthesize the whole picture from the partial views. Also, because of large data volumes, we must use methods capable of simultaneously providing an overall view and exposing various "particulars". Looking for "particulars" requires therefore different techniques than "seeing the whole". Some existing visualization tools such as GeoVista and CommonGIS have successfully demonstrated the advantage of multiple-linked views and the use of information visualization (InfoViz) methods such as Parallel Coordinates and Heat maps to explore spatial multivariate data. GeoViz tools support interactive visual representation and analysis of spatio-temporal data, enabling analysts to explore geospatial and multivariate data from multiple perspectives. GeoViz is differentiated from GIS because it focuses on exploratory visual analysis rather than the pre-defined mapping. GeoViz research focuses particular attention on integrating cartographic approaches with interactive visual representations from information visualization, analytical data dissemination and visual analytics.

Constructing an accurate patient-specific 3D bone model from sparse point sets is a challenging task. A priori information is often required to handle this otherwise ill-posed problem. Previously we have proposed an optimal approach for anatomical shape reconstruction from sparse information, which uses a dense surface point distribution model (DS-PDM) as the a priori information and formulates the surface reconstruction problem as a sequential three-stage optimal estimation process including (1) affine registration;(2) statistical morphing;and (3) kernel-based deformation. Mathematically, it is formulated by applying least-squares method to estimate the unknown parameters of linear regression models (the first two stages) and nonlinear regression model (the last stage). However, it is well-known that the least-squares method is very sensitive to outliers. In this paper, we propose an important enhancement that enables to realize stable reconstruction and robustly reject. outliers. This is achieved by consistently employing least trimmed squares approach in all three stages of the reconstruction to robustly estimate unknown parameters of each regression model. Results of testing the new approach on a simulated data are shown.

The maturation of geographic information system (GIS) technology has revolutionized the use of geospatial data. However, the data required for hydrocarbon resource analysis is inherently three-dimensional (3-D), whereas a conventional two-dimensional (2-D) paradigm has dominated mainstream GIS development. Progress on 3-D GIS has occurred in basic display of points, lines, surfaces and volumes and in the integration of raster (grid) and vector data types. To fully leverage 2-D GIS technology for local and regional hydrocarbon analysis in 3-D, two areas of research hold the highest promise. The most important challenge is in development of a robust model of a 3-D grid compatible with the market-leading platforms. This includes not only models for data indexing, storage and access, but 3-D grid algebraic and spatial operators. Exploitation of 3-D grid data also requires operators for the interaction between raster and vector data types. The second fulcrum of advance is development of easy data interoperability between 3-D GIS and market-leading platforms for analysis of 2-D and 3-D seismic data, digital well logs and for reservoir simulation. The oil and gas industry's investment in these systems and data to support them makes interoperability fundamental to application of 3D GIS to practical problems of hydrocarbon exploration, production and assessment. visualization quality in 3-D GIS comparable with seismic workstations will catalyze both use and development of the technology. However, the durable advantage to 3-D GIS in hydrocarbon analysis is in the extraction of attribute data from mixed vector and raster sets based on absolute and relative 3-D location as well as logical conditions. The greatest return will be in the application of 3-D GIS tools to 3-D seismic combined with other vector and raster data types. The paper presents a prototype that implements multiple coordinated views to information visualization in augmented reality environments. Augmented reality provides more intuitive and easy interaction. It also reduces the limitations of visualization and enhances the collaborative aspect. A modified version of ARToolKit has been used to create the augmented environment, and the 3D scatter plot technique has been developed to represent the multiple views of data. The coordination between views supported dynamic queries, data selection, and the configuration of views and of the detail on demand feature. This paper also reproduces literature usability tests based on tasks in order to analyze the viability to implement multiple coordinated views in augmented environments for information visualization.

This paper reports a bibliometric analysis of evolving co-author networks. Using 5,009 articles covering the years 1993 to 2005 from Transactions D. (Information Systems) of the Institute of Electronics Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE), we attempt to compare the network characteristics for each year, the co-author network characteristics for the entire time span, and the four major components of the entire data set. Finally, we analyze each of these in contrast to extant co-authorship network data and find that the pattern of co-authorship within Information Systems does not change significantly over this time period.

As the volume of digitally accessible information grows, there is increasing pressure on the development of data visualization methods to enable humans to interpret that data. We provide a description of our WebViz system, as a tool to visualize both the structure and usage of web sites. We illustrate the use of our visualization paradigm by introducing polygonal graphs layered on top of our adaptation of radial disk trees. In our system, the structure of a web segment is rendered as a radial tree, and usage data can be extracted and layered as polygonal graphs. By interactively creating and adjusting these layers, a user can develop real time insight into the data. We present the system, show the idea of interactive visual operators, and provide some examples that help show the value of the specific visualization techniques, as well as the interactive use of those techniques.

Hundreds of papers have been presented at the five conferences on coordinated and multiple views (CMV) in exploratory visualization and related conferences on information visualization and visual analytics. However, CMV are still rarely implemented in commercial systems and many users are even not aware that multiple views are useful and coordination can help them to solve their problems. Even toolkits especially designed for information visualization often do not offer any coordination mechanisms for multiple views. One of possible reasons for this may be that existing CMV tools and approaches are insufficiently suited to real-life problems. Most of the CMV tools deal with single-table data sets of rather small sizes. A typical implementation allows one to create several displays (statistical graphics and/or geographical maps) representing individual entities and/or aggregates (e.g., histograms) and link them by brushing and selection. The displays are coordinated through exchanging references to selected entities. To our best knowledge, this approach works efficiently for tables with sizes up to about 105 records. Linking displays that reflect larger tables causes significant delays.

Learning management systems (LMSs) store different kinds of e-learning related data, whose analysis is important for monitoring students' learning processes and for helping detection of potential problems on these processes. Different researches apply information visualization concepts and techniques for graphically and interactively presenting LMS data for analysis. Nonetheless, these researches show data obtained by predefined database queries, which fit only specific analysis situations, in despite of unforeseen situations derived from final user's knowledge about e-learning domain. Taking into account these situations, this paper presents a solution that enable LMS users to define database attributes they want to analyze, without need to know the internal organization of LMS database. Selected attributes are treated as a universal relation query and, after executed, query results are automatically converted into interactive graphical representations, avoiding user's concern with selecting the more adequate chart.
