Scientific visualization as an interdisciplinary research field offers a wide range of methods and techniques to efficiently analyze and visualize the spatial and temporal data and information. In this article a discipline of scientific visualization is needed to explore information and construct knowledge from geodata: geovisualization. This research field offers tools and techniques to discover relationships, clusters and trends in geodata. Adapting methods from computer science and geographic knowledge discovery spatial and spatiotemporal data-patterns and information can be visualized in different types of charts, plots and combined with elements of cartography. This article presents selected methods and techniques for two different scientific tasks: (1) To detect spatial attribute relationships of a landform linked to map. Specifically: spatial relationships of size, shape and location of thermokarst lakes, formed through permafrost degradation. We used star charts to visualize multivariable data and to make visible how landforms attributes are relate to each other. (2) A concept is developed to visually explore the specific distribution of emergency services and service clusters due to space and time. It depends on the example of emergency services of the City of Cologne. This geodata set contains more than 500,000 emergency services beginning 01/2007 and ending in 08/2011. The concept's core is a new hierarchical data representation based on tree diagrams linked with a cartographic visualization of the results received from explorative statistics (e. g., kernel density estimation).

We present a complex, open source tool for detailed machine translation error analysis providing the user with automatic error detection and classification, several monolingual alignment algorithms as well as with training and test corpus browsing. The tool is the result of a merge of automatic error detection and classification of Hjerson (Popovic, 2011) and Addicter (Zeman et al., 2011) into the pipeline and web visualization of Addicter. It classifies errors into categories similar to those of Vilar et al. (2006), such as: morphological, reordering, missing words, extra words and lexical errors. The graphical user interface shows alignments in both training corpus and test data;the different classes of errors are colored. Also, the summary of errors can be displayed to provide an overall view of the MT system's weaknesses. The tool was developed in Linux, but it was tested on Windows too.

This article presents the analytical and retrieval potential of visualization maps. Obtained maps were tested as information retrieval (IR) interface. The collection of documents derived from the ACM Digital Library was mapped on the sphere surface. Proposed approach uses nonlinear similarity of documents by comparing ascribed thematic categories and thereby development of semantic connections between them. For domain analysis the newest IT trend - Cloud Computing was monitored across time period 2007-2009. visualization reflects evolution, dynamics and relational fields of cloud technology as well as its paradigmatic property.

Nonlinear optical imaging techniques based e.g. on coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) or second-harmonic generation (SHG) show great potential for in-vivo investigations of tissue. While the microspectroscopic imaging tools are established, automized data evaluation, i.e. image pattern recognition and automized image classification, of nonlinear optical images still bares great possibilities for future developments towards an objective clinical diagnosis. This contribution details the capability of nonlinear microscopy for both 3D visualization of human tissues and automated discrimination between healthy and diseased patterns using ex-vivo human skin samples. By means of CARS image alignment we show how to obtain a quasi-3D model of a skin biopsy, which allows us to trace the tissue structure in different projections. Furthermore, the potential of automated pattern and organization recognition to distinguish between healthy and keloidal skin tissue is discussed. A first classification algorithm employs the intrinsic geometrical features of collagen, which can be efficiently visualized by SHG microscopy. The shape of the collagen pattern allows conclusions about the physiological state of the skin, as the typical wavy collagen structure of healthy skin is disturbed e.g. in keloid formation. Based on the different collagen patterns a quantitative score characterizing the collagen waviness - and hence reflecting the physiological state of the tissue - is obtained. Further, two additional scoring methods for collagen organization, respectively based on a statistical analysis of the mutual organization of fibers and on FFT, are presented.
