Based on the sift research and changing data of land use from 1996 to 2008, the current situation and changes of land-use spatial structure in Tianshui were analyzed by applying GIS technology and quantitative geographic model. The results indicated that there were obvious internal differences in land-use spatial structure. Firstly, the diversity index of spatial structure was comparatively high;Secondly, the garden plots and transportation land increased obviously, though the index of land use degree fluctuates little since 1996, decreasing slightly as a whole;Thirdly, the information entropy of land use increased generally, and the total land use tended to random, the disorder degree of lands begins to increase and the types of land use are in a period of adjustment.

visualization study on the growth of virtual plant roots is of great significance to enhance the overall level of research on virtual plant growth. In this study, with the tobacco root as the object, its growth was divided by systematic analysis into three stages: root emergence, root growth, and root branching. Through the quantitative analysis of the morphological data of the tobacco root and in combination with results of previous studies, the tobacco root growth, branching and other models were established, and parameter values of the models were extracted. On this basis, computer graphics technology was applied to establish a virtual visualization system for tobacco root growth that should be capable of simulating root growth and computing indicators of roots including the number, length, density, etc. Results indicated that this system can do a better job of simulating the morphological features for the tobacco root and virtually displaying the process of tobacco root growth in a more realistic way.

Climate-G is a large scale distributed testbed devoted to climate change research. It is an unfunded effort started in 2008 and involving a wide community both in Europe and US. The testbed is an interdisciplinary effort involving partners from several institutions and joining expertise in the field of climate change and computational science. Its main goal is to allow scientists carrying out geographical and cross-institutional data discovery, access, analysis, visualization and sharing of climate data. It represents an attempt to address, in a real environment, challenging data and metadata management issues. This paper presents a complete overview about the Climate-G testbed highlighting the most important results that have been achieved since the beginning of this project.

Based on registered individual floating population data from 2005 to 2008 of Yiwu, the phenomena that population floating to Yiwu City from 34 province and 91 counties in Jiangxi provinces is analyzed. The study aims at analyzing the "pull" forces of Yiwu City and developing migration models for understanding determinants factors of population migration/floating into Yiwu City from other areas in China. The spatial layout of Yiwu's pull forces is proved as a V-shaped pattern consisting of the two axes by using explorative spatial data analysis and map visualization method. The migration models with (model 3) or without (model 2) migration stock are presented and estimated using standard linear regression model, spatial error model as well as spatial lag model at the county scale in Jiangxi province. Based on the likelihood statistics, the AIC and the Moran's I statistics of residuals, the model with migration stock provides an improved fit over the model without migration stock. The correlation between migration ratio and man land ratio is significant at the 0.5 level according to estimates of model 3 and spatial version of model 2. All the three estimates of model 2 and the OLS results of model 3 confirm the distance-decay effect while results from the spatial version of model 3 failed to support the distance rule in population floating. Contrary to the previous studies at the provincial level, the correlation between per capital net income of rural labor forces and migration ratio is not significant according to the three versions of the two models due to the small disparities of income within the counties in Jiangxi. Examination of specification tests in spatial version of model 3 indicates that there is less significant spatial error dependence in the spatial lag models than spatial lag dependence in the error models, further suggesting a preference for the lag model. Model 2 does not suggest any preference for choosing spatial error model and spatial lag model.

Background: Gene set analysis is a powerful method of deducing biological meaning for an a priori defined set of genes. Numerous tools have been developed to test statistical enrichment or depletion in specific pathways or gene ontology (GO) terms. Major difficulties towards biological interpretation are integrating diverse types of annotation categories and exploring the relationships between annotation terms of similar information. Results: GARNET (Gene Annotation Relationship NEtwork Tools) is an integrative platform for gene set analysis with many novel features. It includes tools for retrieval of genes from annotation database, statistical analysis & visualization of annotation relationships, and managing gene sets. In an effort to allow access to a full spectrum of amassed biological knowledge, we have integrated a variety of annotation data that include the GO, domain, disease, drug, chromosomal location, and custom-defined annotations. Diverse types of molecular networks (pathways, transcription and microRNA regulations, protein-protein interaction) are also included. The pair-wise relationship between annotation gene sets was calculated using kappa statistics. GARNET consists of three modules - gene set manager, gene set analysis and gene set retrieval, which are tightly integrated to provide virtually automatic analysis for gene sets. A dedicated viewer for annotation network has been developed to facilitate exploration of the related annotations. Conclusions: GARNET (gene annotation relationship network tools) is an integrative platform for diverse types of gene set analysis, where complex relationships among gene annotations can be easily explored with an intuitive network visualization tool (http://***/orhttp://***/garnet/).

One of the major accompaniments of the globalization is the rapid growing of urban areas. At the end of the 1970th only 38% of world lived in cities, this number increased to more than 50% by 2008. In 2030 two third of all people worldwide are expected to live in cities, many of them in megacities. Urban sprawl is a major environmental concern affecting cities and urban. Urban sprawl depends on the socio-economic situation in the cities. Thus, reducing migration, sustainable handling of the limited resources and smart growth are acknowledged as key tasks for urban planning. Coping with these tasks requires precise and adaptive planning instruments. The presented study is part of the research project GAUS (Gaining Additional Urban Space) aiming at inventorying the open space available in urban environments and, moreover, providing flexible multi-criteria spatial decision support system for its development. The method is based on VHR (Very high resolution) optical satellite data (QuickBird (QB) and IKONOS (IK)) which is applied on three study areas: Berlin, Istanbul, and Ruhr Area. Object-based image analysis is applied to map land cover and land use and derive metrics describing urban form and inner-urban structure on multiple scales. The workflow has been standardized and leads to comparable results across different test sites and datasets. In intersection with available GIS (Geographical Information System) and local ancillary data, the outputs of image analysis serve as input for a multi-criteria spatial decision support system. Flexible multi-criteria spatial decision support (MC-SDSS) tool has been created by using MATLAB (Matrix Laboratory) software and its tools (Mapping toolbox etc.). Users can change their weights and parameters with this tool for their different study areas. Urban planners can use final suitability maps of this tool. In the paper we introduce three methods for image processing, they are pixel extraction method, memory method and pointer method. With the same condition of data structure and algorithm, the three methods are used in edge detection for the digital images. In order to compare the actual operation efficiency of these three kinds of methods, we use C# to write a Windows Form Application program in the environment of Visual Studio 2008. The experimental results show that: using pointer method to process digital image has the best execution efficiency in the same conditions.

We present an approach to extract and rank important events in large news video archives. Our approach relies on the assumption that frequent patterns occurring in the large video datasets might correspond to important events. We propose a method to automatically find, analyze, and associate frequent patterns to events in the video datasets. This problem is challenging because: firstly, the event boundary is unknown and large variations in illumination, camera motion, occlusions, and text overlays make it difficult to select appropriate features for event representation. Secondly, the number of frequent patterns is usually large, a method to rank them is required for applications such as recommendation and summarization. Thirdly, large datasets require scalable methods to handle. The novelty of the proposed method is that temporal information is used to rank frequent patterns and that scalable methods from video processing and data mining are integrated seamlessly to handle large datasets. Experimental results on 2,768 news video programs (approx. 1,400 hours of video) broadcast by NHK from 2001 to 2008 show that the method can find important events for summarization and is scalable on large datasets.
