Geospatial information systems provide an abundance of information for researchers and scientists. Unfortunately this type of data can usually only be analyzed a few megapixels at a time, giving researchers a very narrow view into these voluminous data sets. We propose a distributed data gathering and visualization system that allows researchers to view these data at hundreds of megapixels simultaneously. University-industry cooperation has been focused because it improves innovation ability of enterprises and regions. Patent data can be used to analyze university-industry cooperation. The paper uses Shenzhen patent data from 2001 to 2008 to measure Shenzhen university-industry cooperation. By carefully data disposition, we get patent data records representing Shenzhen university-industry cooperation. Through visual identification method of social network analysis, this paper describes the situation of Shenzhen university-industry cooperation. On the one hand, we visualize unit cooperation to analyze how universities, scientific research institutes and enterprises co-work to innovate. On the other hand, we analyze cooperation from patent classification angel. In virtue of different angels of researches, the paper acquires cooperation microstructure to some extent. These findings can be used to measure municipal university-industry cooperation.

The 2007 US EPA report to Congress (US EPA, 2007) on the state of energy consumption in data centers brought to light the true energy inefficiencies built into today's data centers. Marquez et al. (2008) conducted an initial analysis on the productivity of a Pacific Northwest National Lab computer using The Green Grid's data Center Energy Productivity metric (The Green Grid, 2008). Their study highlights how the Top500 ranking of computers disguises the serious energy inefficiency of today's High Performance Computing data centers. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present the numerical modeling of the coupled electromagnetic and thermal fields for the controlled solidification process of non-ferrous alloys. Design/methodology/approach - The paper uses a numerical modeling program for the controlled solidification process modeling to allow visualization of the model and collection of the data. The data are then processed using spreadsheets in order to obtain graphic representations for the variations of the measured values. Findings - The probes cast using this method will have a uniform structure, without micro-fissures. If the solid part growth of the molten is controlled, the process can be stopped that creates solidification centers, thus the material structure will be homogenous. A solution for this matter is given by the control of the solidification structure using forced heating of the liquid part with eddy currents and forced cooling of the solid part. The evolution of the area with eddy currents and the cooled one controls the phase transformation. Originality/value - It is presented here a computation method for the thermal field diffusion and the results of the numerical modelling of the thermal and electromagnetic fields during casting process with controlled solidification layer for the non-ferrous alloys.

This paper presents the implementation of a Dynamic Link Library (DLL) and Signal Conditioning System for on-line qualitative reconstruction and analysis of Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) images. Three different finite element circular meshes were developed for use with the DLL: 104, 464 and 1016 triangular elements. The library allows the user to choose between three different post-reconstruction options for datavisualization: raw data, bilinear interpolation and radial basis function (RBF) interpolation. The DLL can thus be imported into a Virtual Instrumentation software, such as National Instruments LabWindows (c) and Agilent Technologies HPVEE (c) to ease the implementation of virtual instrumentation for EIT measurements. A case study is presented: in-phantom object tracking in laboratory test trials. The results suggest that the EIT DLL can be used as part of a virtual instrumentation program, reducing development time for on-line real-time analysis in multiple applications.

This paper presents a visual analytics approach to explore large news article collections in the domains of polarity and spatial analysis. The exploration is performed on the data collected with Europe Media Monitor (EMM), a system which monitors over 2500 online sources and processes 90,000 articles per day. By analyzing the news feeds, we want to find out which topics are important in different countries and what is the general polarity of the articles within these topics. To assess the polarity of a news article, automatic techniques for polarity analysis are employed and the results are represented using Literature Fingerprinting for visualization. In the spatial description of the news feeds, every article can be represented by two geographic attributes, the news origin and the location of the event itself. In order to assess these spatial properties of news articles, we conducted our geo-analysis, which is able to cope with the size and spatial distribution of the data. Within this application framework, we show opportunities how real-time news feed data can be analyzed efficiently.

VirtualizeMe introduces a new design for a fully immersive TeleImmersion system for remote collaboration and virtual world interaction. This system introduces a new avatar creation approach fullfilling four main attributes: high resolution, scalability, flexibility and affordability. This is achieved by a total separation of reconstruction and rendering and exploiting the capabilities of modern graphic cards. The high resolution is achieved by using as much of the input information as possible through lossless compression of the input data and introducing a focused volumetric visual hull reconstruction. The resulting avatar allows eye-to-eye collaboration for remote users. The interaction with the virtual world is facilitated by the volumetric avatar model and allows a fully immersive system. This paper shows a proof of concept based on publicly available pre-recorded data to allow easier comparison.
