AMEC was called upon in 2004 and again in 2008, to assist the Nashville District USACE in analyzing historical and current data, and displaying the data to help visualize the existing seepage issues at Wolf Creek Dam in south central Kentucky. The amount of information available from the 1940's era dam includes the original geotechnical investigations, design of the dam and detailed construction documentation, the remedial grouting programs, diaphragm wall construction, instrumentation and observations of the embankment and various supplemental investigations accumulated and archived over the past 60+ years. This has created an intimidating and complex volume of data. To assist our client to better understand the information and how differing sets of data relate to each other, we employed a tool originally developed for mining and environmental engineering applications. The study results were input into the MVS/EVS (Mining visualization System/Environmental visualization System) software program which provides 3-dimensional representations of multiple data sets. The original study, published in 2004, has been built upon with the data obtained from other studies and over 1,300 additional borings completed during calendar years 2007 and 2008 by ACT, Gannett Fleming, Willowstick, and others. The modeling programs were obtained from C-Tech Development Corporation (Kahuku, Hawaii). The historical and new data, were converted into the following layers: 1) Surface Topography, 2) Aerial Photography, including Lidar mapping imagery, 3) 3-D structures (grout curtains, diaphragm wall, etc.), 4) Diaphragm Wall, 5) Grout Curtain, 6) Geology, 7) Top of Rock compiled from numerous sources, 8) Temperature survey, 9) Piezometer (water level) data, 10) Wet Areas, 11) Reservoir level, 12) Willowstick data, 13) Multibeam sonar contours, and 14) Ongoing foundation grouting data. We present a software system that enables path-traced rendering of complex scenes. The system consists of two primary components: an application layer that implements the basic rendering algorithm, and an out-of-core scheduling and data-management layer designed to assist the application layer in exploiting hybrid computational resources (e.g., CPUs and GPUs) simultaneously. We describe the basic system architecture, discuss design decisions of the system's data-management layer, and outline an efficient implementation of a path tracer application, where GPUs perform functions such as ray tracing, shadow tracing, importance-driven light sampling, and surface shading. The use of GPUs speeds up the runtime of these components by factors ranging from two to twenty, resulting in a substantial overall increase in rendering speed. The path tracer scales well with respect to CPUs, GPUs and memory per node as well as scaling with the number of nodes. The result is a system that can render large complex scenes with strong performance and scalability. © 2008 The Author(s).

We introduce a novel set of social network analysis based algorithms for mining the Web, blogs, and online forums to identify trends and find the people launching these new trends. These algorithms have been implemented in Condor, a software system for predictive search and analysis of the Web and especially social networks. Algorithms include the temporal computation of network centrality measures, the visualization of social networks as Cybermaps, a semantic process of mining and analyzing large amounts of text based on social network analysis, and sentiment analysis and information filtering methods. The temporal calculation of betweenness of concepts permits to extract and predict long-term trends on the popularity of relevant concepts such as brands, movies, and politicians. We illustrate our approach by qualitatively comparing Web buzz and our Web betweenness for the 2008 US presidential elections, as well as correlating the Web buzz index with share prices.

In this paper, the results of simulating the cooling energy demand of a reference shophouse in Jakarta, Indonesia are presented. The building reference is a two-storey shophouse, of which ground floor is used as a shop and upper floor as a dwelling. The simulation and visualization tool used was Design Builder v.1.8 (***, 2008), an Energy Plus based dynamic thermal simulation engine. First of all, a reference building was simulated, in order to obtain its cooling energy demand. The parameter setting for building envelope of this reference building was based on the data provided by the planner, PT. Jaya Real Property, Tbk. Subsequently a sensitivity analysis was done with the aim of obtaining the parameters that contribute significantly to the decrease of annual cooling energy demand. The parameters investigated were roof construction and insulation, building orientation, SHGC value, the value that represent the glazing's effectiveness in rejecting solar heat gain, and operating time and power of the cooling device. The simulation results show that building facing to the south gives the lowest annual cooling energy demand than other buildings which have north orientation, north-east orientation and south-west orientation, that is 3.65% less cooling energy demand than the reference building which has north orientation. SHGC of the glass will also contribute to the decrease of the annual cooling energy demand. By decreasing 50% of SHGC value will reduce annual cooling energy demand by 8.3%. It is also found that for a ventilated sloping roof construction, applying roof insulation has no significant effect on the reduction of annual cooling energy demand, except for the case that the schedule of the air conditioning in the upper floor is 24 hours always on. In the case of flat roof construction, insulated flat roof will give approximately the same effect as sloping roof. By limiting the power of the cooling device to 2kW which means reducing the inve

This paper discusses the use of wireless inertial sensor to analyze the arm swing movement of a bowler. The main objective is to develop an interactive graphical user interface (GUI) LabVIEW program to analyze and to visualize critical biomechanics parameters of the arm swing movement which allow the bowling coach and the player to assess the performance of the bowler. The most fundamental biomechanics parameters are the angular velocity of the arm at maximum arm height during back swing and at point of release as well as the wrist angle of the entire arm swing movement. Based on the data obtained from the sensor, only angular rate Y, roll angle and pitch angle data are used to be processed and to be analyzed in order to derive all parameters. The results are then to be displayed in the GUI in an appropriate manner. In addition, the developed GUI can acquire the data directly from the sensor and save that data into an Excel file. Besides that, the GUI also has the comparison feature where the bowling coach/player can load two data files and compare the results of each parameter. Several suggestions have been proposed at the end to further improve the effectiveness of this research so that the bowling coach/player will be able to analyze the performance of the bowler more effectively.

Disasters affecting infrastructure, such as the 2001 earthquakes in India, 2005 in Pakistan, 2008 in China and the 2004 tsunami in Asia, provide a common need for intelligent buildings and smart civil structures. Now, imagine massive reductions in time to get the infrastructure working again, realtime information on damage to buildings, massive reductions in cost and time to certify that structures are undamaged and can still be operated, reductions in the number of structures to be rebuilt (if they are known not to be damaged). Achieving these ideas would lead to huge, quantifiable, long‐term savings to government and industry. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can be deployed in buildings to make any civil structure both smart and intelligent. WSNs have recently gained much attention in both public and research communities because they are expected to bring a new paradigm to the interaction between humans, environment, and machines. This paper presents the deployment of WSN nodes in the Top Quality Centralized Instrumentation Centre (TQCIC). We created an ad hoc networking application to collect real‐time data sensed from the nodes that were randomly distributed throughout the building. If the sensors are relocated, then the application automatically reconfigures itself in the light of the new routing topology. WSNs are event‐based systems that rely on the collective effort of several micro‐sensor nodes, which are continuously observing a physical phenomenon. WSN applications require spatially dense sensor deployment in order to achieve satisfactory coverage. The degree of spatial correlation increases with the decreasing inter‐node separation. Energy consumption is reduced dramatically by having only those sensor nodes with unique readings transmit their data. We report on an algorithm based on a spatial correlation technique that assures high QoS (in terms of SNR) of the network as well as proper utilization of energy, by suppressing redundant data transmission. The ability to extract meaning from the huge amounts of data obtained from simulations, experiments, sensors, or the world wide web gives one tremendous advantage over others in the respective area of business or study. visualization becomes a hot topic because it enables that ability. As data size is growing from terascale to petascale and exascale, new visualization techniques must be developed and integrated into data analysis tools and problem solving environments so the collected data can be fully exploited. In this talk, I will point out a few important directions for advancing the visualization technology, which include parallel visualization, knowledge-assisted visualization, intelligent visualization, and in situ visualization. I will use some of the projects we have done at UC Davis in my discussion.

A Phrase-Driven Grammar System (PDGS) is a novel GUI for facilitating the visualization of data. The PDGS integrates data source applications and external visualization tools into its framework and functions as a middle-layer application to coordinate their operations. It allows users to formulate data query and visualization descriptions by selecting graphical icons in a menu or on a map. To specify data query and visualization intuitively and efficiently, we designed Graphical User Interface and a natural-language-like grammar, Phrase-Driven Grammar (PDG). The formulation of PDG data query and visualization descriptions is a constrained natural-language phrase building process. PDG phrases produce graphical visualizations of the data query, allowing users to interactively explore meaningful data relationships, trends, and exceptions.
