Visibility computation plays an important role in characteristics analysis and visualization of terrain surface. Firstly, we define the lines of sight in which each line is associated with viewpoint and target point on terrain with its own height. Then the vector cross product method is used to determine the visible points on this line of sight and invisible points in profile section. The paper develops the radial LOS scanning method to calculate the viewshed of viewpoint, and discusses effects with different scanning angle step in time complexity and viewshed results. The algorithm based on scanning LOS gives attentions to time-consuming and visibility approximation.

Using microarray technology for genetic analysis in biological experiments requires computationally intensive tools to interpret results. The main objective here is to develop a ldquometa-analysisrdquo tool that enables researchers to ldquosprayrdquo microarray data over a network of relevant gene regulation relationships, extracted from a database of published gene regulatory pathway models. The consistency of the data from a microarray experiment is evaluated to determine if it agrees or contradicts with previous findings. The database is limited to ldquoactivaterdquo and ldquoinhibitrdquo gene regulatory relationships at this point and a heuristic graph based approach is developed for consistency checking. Predictions are made for the regulation of genes that were not a part of the microarray experiment, but are related to the experiment through regulatory relationships. This meta-analysis will not only highlight consistent findings but also pinpoint genes that were missed in earlier experiments and should be considered in subsequent analysis.

We consider the task of dimensionality reduction for regression (DRR) whose goal is to find a low dimensional representation of input covariates, while preserving the statistical correlation with output targets. DRR is particularly suited for visualization of high dimensional data as well as the efficient regressor design with a reduced input dimension. In this paper we propose a novel nonlinear method for DRR that exploits the kernel Gram matrices of input and output. While most existing DRR techniques rely on the inverse regression, our approach removes the need for explicit slicing of the output space using covariance operators in RKHS. This unique property make DRR applicable to problem domains with high dimensional output data with potentially significant amounts of noise. Although recent kernel dimensionality reduction algorithms make use of RKHS covariance operators to quantify conditional dependency between the input and the targets via the dimension-reduced input, they are either limited to a transduction setting or linear input subspaces and restricted to non-closed-form solutions. In contrast, our approach provides a closed-form solution to the nonlinear basis functions on which any new input point can be easily projected. We demonstrate the benefits of the proposed method in a comprehensive set of evaluations on several important regression problems that arise in computer vision.

Can e-learning systems effectively provide useful information to help teachers prevent students dropping out and failing as well as other access patterns useful to improve the pace of teaching? We present the data resulting from the analysis of a series of university courses in two different universities, one in Madrid, Spain, and the other one in London, United Kingdom. In order to do so, we have collected data from October 2006 to July 2007 from 400 students from 6 different courses interacting one way or the other with their e-learning platform. Thus, in these two countries a different e-learning tracking system was used to obtain the information about access; in the first one, an Ad-hoc Tracking System called Merlin placed in an in house e-learning system, and in the second one, the standard Blackboard tracking system was used.

Knowledge gathering and investigative tasks in open environments can be very complex because the problem-solving context is constantly evolving, and the data may be incomplete, unreliable and/or conflicting. This paper significantly extends our previous work on a mixed-initiative agent by making it capable of assisting humans in foraging task analysis using AI blackboard-based reasoning, visualizations and a mix-initiative user interface. The agent is equipped with the ability to adapt its processing to available resources, deadlines and its current problem-solving context.

Correlation is often used to measure the similarity between signals and is an important tool in signal and image processing. In some applications it is common that signals are corrupted by local bursts of noise. This adversely affects the performance of signal recognition algorithms. This paper presents a novel correlation estimator, which is robust to locally corrupted signals. The estimator is generalized to multivariate correlation analysis (general linear model, GLM, and canonical correlation analysis, CCA). Synthetic functional MRI data is used to demonstrate the estimator, and its robustness is shown to increase the performance of signal detection.

OBJECTIVE: A new method of segmentation and fiber tractography of corpus callosum in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is provided, and applied in the study of children with high functioning autism. METHOD: Diffusion tensor imaging data has been used to analyze the fiber tractography of corpus callosum, which has been manually extracted out and subdivided into five subregions in the scheme proposed by Hofer. DTI data has been acquired from two male subjects aged 8, including one child diagnosed as high-functioning autism and one typically developing child as control. RESULTS: Depending on DTI-based fiber tractography, we distinguished five fiber bundles of corpus callosum projected into prefrontal, premotor, supplementary motor, primary motor, and primary sensory areas as well as into parietal, temporal, and occipital areas after segmentation of corpus callosum successfully. Topography of callosal fiber tracts has been used to analyze the cortical connectivity in DTI data and realized the fiber visualization which presents an efficient description of the white matter difference between the child with high functioning autism and the healthy control. CONCLUSIONS: DTI-based region-of-interest (ROI) fiber tractography of the entire corpus callosum and subregions provide a comprehensive and comparable method to study the white matter organization, particularly applied in autism.

It has been well known since the earliest days of color photography that color-balance in general, and facial reproduction (flesh tones) in particular, are of dominant interest to the consumer, and significant research resources have been expended in satisfying this need. The general problem is a difficult one, spanning the factors that govern perception and personal preference, the physics and chemistry of color reproduction, as well as wide field of color measurement specification, and analysis. However, with the advent of digital photography and its widespread acceptance in the consumer market, and with the possibility of a much greater degree of individual control over color reproduction, the field is taking on a new consumer-driven impetus, and the provision of user facilities for preferred color choice now constitutes an intense field of research. In addition, due to the conveniences of digital technology, the collection of large data bases and statistics relating to individual color preferences have now become a relatively straightforward operation. Using a consumer preference approach of this type, we have developed a user-friendly facility whereby unskilled consumers may manipulate the color of their personal digital images according to their preferred choice. By virtue of its ease of operation and the real-time nature of the color-correction transforms, this facility can readily be inserted anywhere a consumer interacts with a digital image, from camera, printer, or scanner, to web or photo-kiosk. Here the underlying scientific principles are explored in detail, and these are related to the practical color-preference outcomes. Examples are given of the application to the correction of images with unsatisfactory color balance, and especially to flesh tones and faces, and the nature of the consumer controls and their corresponding image transformations are explored.

We present a method to automatically discover key phrase from audio recordings in this paper. Chroma features are firstly selected to represent melodic information and a modified similarity matrix based on this feature is then established for repeated pattern searching. We also run a pruning process to discard invalid phrase pairs and a novel boundary correction algorithm is put to make the phrases more precisely. Final key phrase is determined by both its occurrence frequency and energy information. Key phrases of nearly 200 pop songs are extracted using our proposed methodand 5 person's evaluations to the experiment results show the effectiveness of our method.

Non close loop manufacturing process, typically in the hard disk media industries rely from its inspection machine to generate production yield temporal data that can be used for future analysis. In order for an engineer to proactively perform maintenance on its process equipment and avoiding unnecessary unplanned down time, they need to be able to predict the outcome of the yield before products arrives at the inspection machine. The future prediction of the yield outcome can be achieved by visualizing the historical data pattern generated from the inspection machine, transform the data pattern and map it into machine learning algorithm for training in order to automatically generate a prediction model without the visual interpretation needs to be done by human.
