Since the early demonstration of the curative potential of radiation therapy for tumor sterilization, normal tissue toxicity continues to be dose limiting. Accurate prediction of patient¿s complication risk would allow personalization of treatment planning decisions. Nonlinear kernel methods can provide a robust framework for learning complex interactions between observed toxicities and treatment, anatomical, and patient-related variables. However, proper application of these powerful methods would require better understanding of a high-dimensional feature space that is spanned by all these variables. In this work, we investigate methods for visualization of this high-dimensional space and compare different approaches for extracting discriminant features. Our preliminary results demonstrate that principle component analysis is a valuable tool for visualizing high dimensional data and for determining proper kernel type. In addition, variable selection based on resampling methods within the logistic regression framework seemed to yield improved prediction performance compared to the recursive-feature elimination method.

Research has shown that modern micro-architectures are vulnerable to soft errors, i.e., temporary errors caused by voltage spikes produced by cosmic radiation. Soft-error impact is usually evaluated using fault injection, a black-box testing approach similar to mutation testing. In this paper, we complement an existing evaluation of a prototype brake-by-wire controller, developed by Volvo Technology, with static-analysis techniques to improve test effectiveness. The fault-injection tests are both time- and data-intensive, which renders their qualitative and quantitative assessment difficult. We devise a prototype visualization tool, which groups experiments by injection point and provides an overview of both instruction and fault coverage, and the ability to detect patterns and anomalies. We use the program-dependence graph to identify experiments with a priori known outcome, and implement a static analysis to reduce the test volume. The existing pre-injection heuristic is extended with liveness analysis to enable an unbiased fault-to-failure probability.

Scientists has largely understand the structure of glass and the ion trajectories has largely relied on statistical analysis of data collected from experimental measurement and computer simulation. Invariably, the details of the structure-transport relationships in the data have been ignored in favor of ensemble average. In this works, we present a visual study of such relationships using surface-based visualization techniques. In particular, we consider a simulated three-dimensional (3D) time-varying model of ion trajectories, and examine the spatio-temporal collaborative among mobile ions. Our goal is to devise effective visual representations to aid scientists especially biologists in identifying possible collaborative behaviors and their spatial and temporal association among complex and seemingly chaotic atom movements in ion trajectories. We propose a hybrid scheme that used 3D glyphs for orientation, color scale and codeword for depicting the time and opacity with highlight and de-highlight factors for collaborative ion dynamic events.

There are various issues that limit the development and deployment of new software solutions in cancer image analysis research. In this paper we discuss some of these and propose a framework design based on cloud computing concepts, Microsoft technologies, existing middleware and imaging toolkits. Furthermore, we address some of these issues by introducing collaborative visual tools for visual input data and multi-user interactions.

The increasing demands on interactive algorithm visualisations that can be effectively used in learning, teaching and research, as well as the lack of up-to-date visualisation systems calls for a new modern architecture for universal algorithm visualisation systems (AVS). Defining a new architecture requires an extensive analysis of existing AVS and specifying key requirements, which the architecture has to meet. Analysing current AVS and comparing them to each other, we came to the decision that there is a great potential for designing and implementing a new universal and extensible modern architecture. Based on our analysis and motivated by the decreasing interest on algorithm improvisations by both developers and faculty over the last few years, we have developed and implemented a generic architecture that we briefly present in this work. The application of this architecture simplifies the creation process of pedagogically effective visualisations of arbitrary algorithms and data structures.

The work reported here deals with the observation of pedagogical activities in educational platforms. Userspsila behavior is observed through the traces of their activity. In this paper we present a flexible observation solution based on a set of dedicated software agents that enables the teacher to dynamically adapt his/her observation scenario during the learning session. A multi-agent system with a dedicated agent configuration language is described.

We review a form of topology preserving mapping which uses the same underlying structure as the generative topographic mapping (GTM) but organises the projections of the latent points into data space based on the method of harmonic K-means. We show that projections of the Olivetti face database onto this latent space show good performance in terms of identifying all images of a particular individual as lying in the same section of the latent space.

Microarrays have become popular devices used to elucidate changes of cell status. Following microarray experiments, technicians would like to verify their observations and changes of cell status occurring because of stimuli during experiments. Currently, we validate analyses of several or hundreds of samples using clustering and visualization. However, comparison is not an easy task because knowledge of data analysis is required and hundreds of clusters might be produced. This study presents GOMA, a web-based expression enrichment checking server using Gene Ontology (GO). By putting sets of gene names and expressions into the server, which GO categoriespsila genes are enriched can be verified immediately, and changes of cell status can be detected. The server presents a graphical GO structure association of their terms to ease the checking scheme. We evaluate that our web server enables us to recognize functions associated with changes of gene expression and to elucidate effects of different stimuli. The experimental results shows that our web server detects aldo-keto reductase activity under sorbitol supplemental condition from yeast expression data automatically, and our server visualizes the functional changes between sorbitol condition and stationary phase. Classification of textures in scene images is very difficult due to the high variability of the data within and between images caused by effects such as non-homogeneity of the textures, changes in illumination, shadows, foreshortening and self-occlusion. For these reasons, finding proper features and representative training samples for a classifier is very problematic. Even defining the classes that can be discriminated with texture information is not so straightforward. In this paper, a visualization-based approach for training a texture classifier is presented. A improved multi-channel local binary patterns (LBP) in RGB color space are used as textured color features and a K-NN is employed for visual training and classification, providing very promising results in the classification of outdoor scene images.
