We present a novel algorithm for simultaneous color and depth inpainting. The algorithm takes stereo images and estimated disparity maps as input and fills in missing color and depth information introduced by occlusions or object removal. We first complete the disparities for the occlusion regions using a segmentation-based approach. The completed disparities can be used to facilitate the user in labeling objects to be removed. Since part of the removed regions in one image is visible in the other, we mutually complete the two images through 3D warping. Finally, we complete the remaining unknown regions using a depth-assisted texture synthesis technique, which simultaneously fills in both color and depth. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm on several challenging data sets.

The Qinghai-Tibet railway is the highest railway in the world. The operational conditions of this railway are very harsh, such as occurrence of earthquake, potential melting of frozen soil, and severely cold and thin air. Real time monitoring the deformation of the railway system for maintaining safe operation has posed a big challenge. Extensive document review conducted by the authors reveals that the current monitoring systems do not include monitoring of the deformation of critical railway element - rail track. The authors propose in the paper a novel approach which could be implemented to conduct an automated, real time and cost-effective monitoring of whole rail track system. This new monitoring system consists of two sub-systems: a real-time rail track monitoring system with precise point positioning (PPP), and the geographical information system (GIS) to support the development, analysis and visualization of real-time spatial and attribute data sets. Details about the system integration are also presented in the paper. The approach will have general significance to the monitoring of any large civil engineering infrastructures.

Ever growing music collections ask for novel ways of organization. The traditional browsing of folder hierarchies or search by title and album tends to be insufficient to maintain an overview of a collection of orders of thousands of tracks. Methods based on song similarity offer an alternative to keyword-based search. In this work we propose to use a high-dimensional map of the "world of music" as a data structure for music retrieval and exploration of personal collections. Our approach does not require expensive analysis of audio signals and scales to hundreds of thousands of tracks. The techniques presented in this work can be used in a variety of applications, ranging from automatic DJs to file sharing on mobile devices. As a concrete example, we have developed a Web-application that allows users to visualize and navigate through their music collections and create playlists by specifying trajectories.

Face images are often very high-dimensional and complex. However, the actual underlying structure can be characterized by a small number of features. Hence, locally linear embedding (LLE) is proposed as a nonlinear dimension reduction technique to deal this problem. LLE learns the intrinsic manifold embedded in the high dimensional ambient space by minimizing the global reconstruction error of the neighbourhood in the data set. LLE is popular in analyzing face images with different poses, illuminations or facial expressions for one subject class. It is developed based on the assumption that data that is distributed on a single manifold is having the same class label; hence the process of neighborhood selection is non class-specific. However, this is inappropriate to face recognition as face recognition learns in multiple manifolds where each representing data on one specific class. Here, we modify the original LLE by embedding prior class information in the process of neighborhood selection. Experimental results demonstrate that our technique consistently outperforms the original LLE in ORL, PIE and FRGC databases.

Provenance is essential in scientific experiments. It contains information that is key to preserving the data and to determine it's quality and authorship. In complex experiments and analyses, where multiple tools are used to derive data products, provenance captured by these tools must be combined in order to determine the complete lineage of the derived products. We propose a mediator-based architecture to integrate provenance information from multiple sources, which contains two key components: a global mediated schema that is general and capable of representing provenance information represented in different models; and an expressive query interface that supports complex queries over provenance information spread over multiple different sources. We also present a case study where we show how this model was applied to integrate provenance from three provenance-enabled systems.

The past years have seen the rapid increase of security related incidents in the field of information technology. IT infrastructures in the commercial as well as in the governmental sector are becoming evermore heterogeneous which increases the complexity of handling and maintaining an adequate security level. Especially organizations which are hosting and processing highly sensitive data are obligated to establish a holistic company- wide security approach. We propose a novel security concept to reduce this complexity by automatic assessment of security advisories. A central entity collects vulnerability information from various sources, converts it into a standardized and machine-readable format and distributes it to its subscribers. The subscribers are then able to automatically map the vulnerability information to the ontological stored infrastructure data to visualize newly-discovered software vulnerabilities. The automatic analysis of vulnerabilities decreases response times and permits precise response to new threats and vulnerabilities, thus decreasing the administration complexity and increasing the IT security level.

In a multi-robot system, in which each of the robots constructs its own local map, it is necessary to perform the fusion of these maps into a global one. This task is normally performed in two different steps: by aligning the maps and then merging the data. This paper focusses on the first step: Map Alignment, which consists in obtaining the transformation between the local maps built independently. In this way, these local maps will have a common reference frame. In this paper, a collection of algorithms for solving the map alignment are analyzed under different conditions of noise in the data and intersection between local maps. This study is performed in a visual SLAM context, in which the robots construct landmark-based maps. The landmarks consist in 3D points captured from the environment and characterized by a visual descriptor.

Image categorization is undoubtedly one of the most challenging open problems faced in Computer Vision, far from being solved by employing pure visual cues. Recently, additional textual "tags" can be associated to images, enriching their semantic interpretation beyond the pure visual aspect, and helping to bridge the so-called semantic gap. One of the latest class of tags consists in geo-location data, containing information about the geographical site where an image has been captured. Such data motivate, if not require, novel strategies to categorize images, and pose new problems to focus on. In this paper, we present a statistical method for geo-located image categorization, in which categories are formed by clustering geographically proximal images with similar visual appearance. The proposed strategy permits also to deal with the geo-recognition problem, i.e., to infer the geographical area depicted by images with no available location information. The method lies in the wide literature on statistical latent representations, in particular, the probabilistic Latent Semantic analysis (pLSA) paradigm has been extended, introducing a latent aspect which characterizes peculiar visual features of different geographical zones. Experiments on categorization and geo-recognition have been carried out employing a well-known geographical image repository: results are actually very promising, opening new interesting challenges and applications in this research field.

The availability of precision time synchronization, such as that provided by IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol, make it desirable to have signal processing methods available for signals sampled at non-uniform intervals but but with accurately recorded sample times, called time stamps. One common analysis tool for uniformly sampled measured data, the histogram, is used to visualize the probabilities of measured values occuring. When measurements are not uniformly sampled, however, the measured values cannot simply be binned into a histogram. A new method is presented for visualizing the probability density of a time-stamped, non-uniformly sampled signal. A bank of rank-order filters is used to produce a time-varying estimate of the cumulative density function of the signal. The approximate derivative of that function estimates the probability density function of the signal. An example is presented of use of the proposed method on actual measured data.
