In this paper, we detail some technical alternatives when building a coherent distributed visual sensor network by using the multi-agent paradigm. We argue that the multi-agent paradigm fits well within the visual sensor network architecture and in this paper we specially focus on the problem of distributed data fusion. Three different data fusion coordination schemes are proposed and experimental results of passive fusion are presented and discussed. The main contributions of this paper are twofold, first we propose the use of multi-agent paradigm as the visual sensor architecture and present a real system results. Secondly, the use of feedback information in the visual sensors, called active fusion, is proposed. The experimental results prove that the multi-agent paradigm fits well within the visual sensor network and provide a novel mechanism to develop a real visual sensor network system.

In the present work, we estimated the functional networks in the frequency domain from a set of high-resolution EEG data in a group of healthy subjects during the showing of commercial spots within a neutral documentary. Then, we evaluated the differences in the cortical network associated with later remembered and not-remembered commercials by calculating the global- E g and local-efficiency E l indexes. During the visualization of the video-clips that will be forgotten (FRG), the cortical network exhibited high values of global- and local-efficiency, reflecting a small-world configuration. During the visualization of the video-clips that will be remembered (RMB), the same indexes appeared significantly lower. Such a difference seems not depending on the spectral content of the cortical activity. This result shows how the network communication efficiency would be affected by the presence of attentional and semantic processes that are behind a successful memory encoding in a lifelike situation.

Processor implementation and performance analysis are fundamental in computer architecture education. A processor can be described at different abstraction levels: a black box with inputs and outputs, the composition of RT (Register-Transfer) level components, the composition of gate level components, etc. Performance of a processor is impacted by factors such as clock cycle, programs, and componentspsila propagation delays. With the traditional text-based educational material, teaching and learning of the processor implementation is difficult. Processor simulation offers an effective way for education through dynamic visualization and flexible experimentation. This paper presents a MIPS32 Processor Simulator that models the single-cycle, multi-cycle, and pipeline processors described in the classic textbook, ldquoComputer Organization and Design: The Hardware/Software Interfacerdquo written by Patterson and Hennessy. The Simulator is developed in DEVSJAVA simulator, a realization of the Discrete Event System Specification with support for modeling parallel, hierarchical, and component-based systems. This simulator provides animation at RT-level during instruction execution, collects performance data (including cycle count, execution time, and instruction count), allows viewing components at desired abstraction levels, and is platform independent. The simulator can also be easily extended/reused to develop other processor types. Existing MIPS processor simulators do not provide sufficient support for the above mentioned features.

Future advances in science depend on our ability to comprehend the vast amounts of data being produced and acquired, and scientific visualization is a key enabling technology in this endeavor. We posit that visualization should be better integrated with the data exploration process instead of being done after the fact - when all the science is done - simply to generate presentations of the findings. An important barrier to a wider adoption of visualization is complexity: the design of effective visualizations is a complex, multistage process that requires deep understanding of existing techniques, and how they relate to human cognition. We envision visualization software tools evolving into "scientific discovery" environments that support the creative tasks in the discovery pipeline, from data acquisition and simulation to hypothesis testing and evaluation, and that enable the publication of results that can be reproduced and verified. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.

The given work examines peculiarities of development and implementation of computer-aided design tools for high-performance combined fixed, wireless and mobile communication networks, corporate networks (CN). In the scope of authors interests a Planning Tool for Wireless Networks (IEEE 802.11a, b, g and 802.16) is situated. Site Finder, a Wireless Planning Tool is integrated within the CANDY Framework [1-3] and aimed to optimization of constellation of Access Points and Base Stations on PHY-layer under use of built-in project data visualization and documenting features. The obtained wireless networks solutions can be easily coupled with wired part of the designed CN as well as provide the further phases of integrated design workflow (cable system route tracing, load evaluation, performance and costs analysis).

Morse theory studies the relationship between the topology of a manifold M and the critical points of a scalar function f defined over M. Morse and Morse-Smale complexes, defined by critical points and integral lines of f, induce a subdivision of M into regions of uniform gradient flow, representing the morphology of M in a compact way. Function f can be simplified by canceling its critical points in pairs, thus simplifying the morphological representation of M, given by Morse and Morse-Smale complexes of f. Here, we propose a compact representation for the two Morse complexes in 3D, which is based on encoding the incidence relations of their cells, and on exploiting the duality among the complexes. We define cancellation operations, and their inverse expansion operations, on the Morse complexes and on their dual representation. We propose a multi-scale representation of the Morse complexes which provides a description of such complexes, and thus of the morphology of a 3D scalar field, at different levels of abstraction. This representation allows us also to perform selective refinement operations to extract description of the complexes which varies in different parts of the domain, thus improving efficiency on large data sets, and eliminating the noise in the data through topology simplification.

An interesting property of network is that the information is not only contained in the entities, but also in the links between them. As the structure of the co-authorship network can greatly influence its function and reflect how the internal information is exchanged. We attempt to get deep insight of the features in a co-authorship network at a university. This is done by the following two steps. First, we will explore the basic statistical properties of the co-authorship network and try to present these properties by different graph drawing techniques. Second, to gain more insight of the co-authorship network, we will use a community detecting algorithm to find the clusters of the network. By filtering the unstable links and detecting the clusters, we find there are many stable links in these clusters and many unstable links take the role of "bridges"' between these clusters. By labeling these communities with different department names, we can get an overview of the main research fields of the university and their relations.

Recently, researchers have been actively studying on Web mining with various data in the World Wide Web. Since Web pages are generally semi-structured, which makes it difficult to identify informative blocks, techniques of content detection by removing unnecessary data (e.g. advertisements) from the Web pages become important. Generally a Web page consists of many blocks containing various data and structural information. In this paper, we propose a method that classifies the blocks of a Web page into an appropriate category by building a Tree Alignment model representing HTML structure and a Vector model representing the features of the blocks. Web sites normally have their own templates and the blocks may be related to different categories even though they are located in the same position in the Web browser or are structurally similar. Hence it is difficult to classify the blocks into accurate categories through building one classifier. To solve the problem, in our approach, multiple classifiers are built, one for each training domain, and the block classification proceeds through combining them.

Ecological environment is the primary condition for human being survival, social and economic development. The research of the regional ecological environment becomes more and more important to regional sustainable development in order to achieve the harmonious relationship between the person and the nature. In the process, the regional ecological environment spatial data which can express the spatial entities' features, attributes and relationships plays increasingly important role. So the regional ecological environmental spatial data mining has the extremely vital significance for regional sustainable development. This article proposes the regional ecological environment spatial data mining overall theoretical framework based on the GIS and RS and puts forward the ecological environment database establishment method on base of the thorough analysis of ecological environment data's chief feature. In the case study, the paper accomplishes multi-factors quantitative ecological sensitivity comprehensive evaluation and the ecological function regionalization based on the regional ecological environment spatial data mining theoretical framework.

Argumentation is a key component of scientific practice. It involves a dialectical balance of opposition and agreement, requiring negotiation and affording conceptual change through the co-construction of understandings. In classroom science inquiry with complex visual data representations, argumentation is an essential discourse structure through which students make sense of data and domain concepts. This study analyzed the argumentation practices of middle school students conducting an earth science inquiry project using data visualization tools. analysis of spoken and gestural interactions during small-group work of one group of students in each of three classrooms revealed three common modes in which students employed visual data in argumentation: (1) using data-referenced talk and gesture to challenge authoritative positioning; (2) using gesture to participate in argumentation with incomplete conceptual vocabulary; and (3) using argumentation about data as a means of co-constructing the goals of academic tasks.
