Quantitatively driven visualization and analysis on emerging architectures

We live in a world of ever-increasing amounts of information that is not only dynamically changing but also dramatically changing in complexity. This trend of "information overload" has quickly overwhelmed our capabilities to explore, hypothesize, and thus fully interpret the underlying details in these data. To further complicate matters, the computer architectures that have traditionally provided improved performance are undergoing a revolutionary change as manufacturers transition to building multi- and many-core processors. While these trends have the potential to lead to new scientific breakthroughs via simulation and modeling, they will do so in a disruptive manner, potentially placing a significant strain on software development activities including the overall data analysis process. In this paper we explore an approach that exploits these emerging architectures to provide an integrated environment for high-performance data analysis and visualization. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Laser wakefield particle accelerators have shown the potential to generate electric fields thousands of times higher than those of conventional accelerators. The resulting extremely short particle acceleration distance could yield a potential new compact source of energetic electrons and radiation, with wide applications from medicine to physics. Physicists investigate laser-plasma internal dynamics by running particle-in-cell simulations; however, this generates a large dataset that requires time-consuming, manual inspection by experts in order to detect key features such as beam formation. This paper describes a framework to automate the data analysis and classification of simulation data. First, we propose a new method to identify locations with high density of particles in the space-time domain, based on maximum extremum point detection on the particle distribution. We analyze high density electron regions using a lifetime diagram by organizing and pruning the maximum extrema as nodes in a minimum spanning tree. Second, we partition the multivariate data using fuzzy clustering to detect time steps in a experiment that may contain a high quality electron beam. Finally, we combine results from fuzzy clustering and bunch lifetime analysis to estimate spatially confined beams. We demonstrate our algorithms successfully on four different simulation datasets.

Geographic information systems (GIS) are computer-based systems designed to support the capture, management, manipulation, analysis, and modeling of spatially referenced data. At present, GIS has been extensively used in the energy management system and provides visualized platform to electrical distribution system analysis, design and operation, that is, AM/FM/GIS. One-line diagrams are widely used to represent the electrical distribution system current state and its facilities connectivity relationship. Once AM/FM/GIS integrate with SCADA, the real time operational data obtained, one-line diagrams could represent electrical distribution system dynamic topological relationship. In the past, one-line diagrams was produced by means of manual working using CAD or more original analogy circuit board, it is inefficient and easily error. Therefore it's significant to implement automatic generation one- line diagram, it can reduce the human errors and the huge effort in a manual generation technique. This paper presents a methodology to automatically build these diagrams based on the usage of geospatial data from AM/FM/GIS. All electrical distribution system facilities including the network buses, branches, switches and transformers were abstracted into edges and nodes. With the aid of the routing methodology in the large scale integration, an intelligent routing algorithm for the power system graph is presented. The intelligent routing algorithm permits the elimination of intersection and overlap of buses and other facilities. The approach was successfully demonstrated with some city district electrical distribution system.

Summary form only given. Geospatial information is not static. It changes and expands over time. The sources for gathering real-time geospatial information are proliferating at a rapid pace. Large numbers of multi-media sensors, from video surveillance cameras to personal cell phones, can now capture activities of the population within regions of interest that can be integrated with the terrain and features in the region. This comprehensive set of historical and current geospatial information has the potential to provide substantial situation awareness of the current environment, as well as predictive analysis of the geospatial trends over time. Balfour Technologies understands the challenges presented in correlating, visualizing, and utilizing geospatial-temporal data, and has the talent, experience and technology necessary to deploy innovative four-dimensional solutions. Hydro-dams safety represents an important concern since their failure could be critical for the society. A key part of the hydro-dams surveillance programs is their visual inspection. However few computer vision support tools for implementing semi-automatically and objectively the visual surveillance and observation of the hydro-dams components exist. One of the issues addressed during the visual inspection, important in the preservation of a good condition of the concrete, is the examination of surface deterioration in respect to small patterned cracks and roughness on the downstream wall. This is particularly a task where digital image enhancement and analysis can bring significant benefit, not only by presenting the user with a more relevant image of the surface deterioration, but also by providing - through suitable numerical descriptors, correlated with linguistic descriptors- subjective and examiner-independent information on the surface state. The correlation of extracted numerical descriptors used to quantify the surface roughness with linguistic qualifiers of the deterioration state of the hydro-dam wall should be determined using information gathered from observers, since it must be compliant to the human expert interpretation of visual data in assessing the concrete surface deterioration. Such an approach would result in a computer vision decision support tool embedding expert knowledge, as designed, implemented and proposed in this paper. The resulting software system was verified on a set of images acquired from a Romanian hydro-dam. The compliance of the linguistic results with the human observation proves its functionality as a semi-automatic tool for hydro-dams surveillance.

The genealogical information is the best resources of the family histories which contain large amount of familiespsila information and relationships between members. Despite the improvement of genealogy searching method, users still face the difficulties of searching. This paper is going to discuss the design and development of suitable techniques that improve efficiency of Genealogical Information Searching System. Regarding the developed system, object oriented structures are defined to manage compiled detail of genealogy systematically. BBS technique is applied to search for two particular peoplepsilas relationship and family information. Space Tree is used to visualize hierarchy information that dynamically lays out branches to best fit the existing screen space. The result of improvement certainly benefits the exploration of large hierarchiespsila structure.

Sem@ntica is a system for extracting the information contained in collections of documents into a knowledge base. It combines high quality conventional named entity analysis with an ontology class labeling capability for open class words. The ontology comprises an upper ontology and one or more domain ontologies. The system has tools for rapidly designing the ontology and mapping segments of Word Net on to ontology classes. The extracted knowledge base can be queried directly using the KM language and tools are provided for rapid construction of dynamic web page reports and for portal design. The system is open and its capabilities can be controlled and viewed via an extended suite of dynamic Web page visualizations. Its component capabilities are available via TCP/IP remote procedure calls and via SOAP Web services. Sem@ntica is designed to provide the front-end processing for national and commercial intelligence processing; it has a wide field of potential application.

A so-called DHCED (data Hiding by Conjugate Error Diffusion) method was proposed to hide a binary visual secret into halftone images such that the watermarked halftone image still has good visual quality. When decoding, the secret can be visually revealed by directly superimposing the halftone images. The authors claimed that the DHCED scheme reduced the boundary artifacts around the hidden visual secret in the watermarked halftone image than the previous schemes. However, the DHCED scheme does not achieve the perfect secrecy like the steganography scheme and is still compromised by the gradient-attack In this paper, by combining the halftoning technique and the visual cryptography technique, we introduce a new steganography scheme for halftone images. Our new scheme has the perfect secrecy that one cannot gain any information from the watermarked halftone image by either the human visual system or the computer program.

A comprehensive numerical framework utilizing multi-element unstructured CFD and rigorous real fluid property routines has been developed to carry out analyses of propellant tank and delivery systems. The gas-liquid interface is captured as part of the solution procedure and individual species transport equations track components of the ullage, propellant and the pressurant. Traditionally CFD modeling of pressurization and mixing in cryogenic tanks has been difficult primarily because the fluids in the tank co-exist in different sub-critical and supercritical states with largely varying properties that have to be accurately accounted for in order to predict the correct mixing and phase change between the ullage and the propellant. With rigorous models implemented for real fluid property routines and high resolution interface capturing schemes, CFD can model the coupling between the propellant and pressurant including heat transfer and phase change effects and accurately capture the complex physics in the evolving flowfields. This holds the promise of allowing the specification of operational conditions and procedures that could minimize the undesirable mixing and heat transfer inherent in propellant tank operation. The applicability of the numerical framework is demonstrated with simulations of different problems representative of tank operation in orbital flight and ground test operations. These include large amplitude sloshing in a drop tank, self-pressurization of a propellant tank in an experimental orbital flight, pressurization of a run-time tank system utilized in ground test facilities. Whenever possible, experimental visualization, test data and results from simpler reduced order models are used to corroborate the simulation results. © 2008 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

The NASA Constellation Program is working toward the goals of returning a human presence to the moon and extending that presence to Mars. This endeavor will span decades and many of the people supporting the effort will have left before the first lunar mission leaves Earth. A significant challenge will be to record and preserve their vision, plan and goals for use by newer generations after the older generations have long *** is playing an increasingly powerful role in achieving Constellation's mission. It is prevalent in every phase from design and development to operations, analysis and planning. Some of the tools, especially those that are graphically rich, provide a way to perform the necessary analysis as well as to present the results. Others do not. This translates into a long-term problem of maintaining useful simulation results and doing so well beyond the life cycle of the tools *** address these issues, the Constellation Program's data Presentation and visualization (DPV) element is tasked with combining rich visual environments with long data life. The Distributed Observer Network (DON) holds a significant role in accomplishing this task. Its features and abilities are attractive to a large segment of the simulation community, and the tool has been architected to enable simple procedures for archival and the reintroduction of old data into the virtual *** of a single solution for the multitude of authoritative sources in use has required the removal of many barriers to collaboration and data sharing between tools and developers. These barriers include data formats, model formats, nomenclature and processes. This paper will focus on how DPV is overcoming these barriers to enable publication of multi-dimensional analysis results not only for the engineers of today, but also for those to come.
