We introduce a locally defined shape-maintaining method for interpolating between corresponding oriented samples (vertices) from a pair of surfaces. We have applied this method to interpolate synthetic data sets in two and three dimensions and to interpolate medially represented shape models of anatomical objects in three dimensions. In the plane, each oriented vertex follows a circular arc as if it was rotating to its destination. In three dimensions, each oriented vertex moves along a helical path that combines in-plane rotation with translation along the axis of rotation. We show that our planar method provides shape-maintaining interpolations when the reference and target objects are similar. Moreover, the interpolations are size maintaining when the reference and target objects are congruent. In three dimensions, similar objects are interpolated by an affine transformation. We use measurements of the fractional anisotropy of such global affine transformations to demonstrate that our method is generally more-shape preserving than the alternative of interpolating vertices along linear paths irrespective of changes in orientation. In both two and three dimensions we have experimental evidence that when non-shape-preserving deformations are applied to template shapes, the interpolation tends to be visually satisfying with each intermediate object appearing to belong to the same class of objects as the end points.

High-resolution X-ray computed tomography (CT) allows the visualisation and failure analysis of the internal microstructure of small electronic devices - even if they have complicated 3D-structures where 2D X-ray microscopy would give unclear information. During the last decade, CT has progressed to higher resolution and faster reconstruction of the 3D-volume. Most recently it even allows a three-dimensional look into the inside of materials with submicron resolution. By means of nanofocus reg tube technology, nanoCT reg -systems are pushing forward into application fields that were exclusive to expensive synchrotron techniques. The new nanotom reg of phoenix|X-ray is a very compact laboratory system specialised for the analysis of small samples with the exceptional submicron voxel-resolution down to 500 nm (0.5 microns). It is the first 180 kV nanofocus reg computed tomography system in the world which is tailored specifically to the highest-resolution applications in the fields of electronics, micro mechanics or materials science. Therefore it is particularly suitable for nanoCT reg -examination of electronic packages, sensors, actuators, complex micro electronic components with concealing parts such as capacitors or stacked dies and material samples of every type like synthetic materials, ceramics or composites. Any internal difference in material, density or porosity within a sample can be visualised and data like distances or pore volumes can be measured. By granting the user the ability to navigate the internal structure of an object slice-by-slice in a nondestructive manner, the nanotom reg creates new possibilities for sample analysis per mouse click which have thus far been unreachable. NanoCT reg widely expands the spectrum of detectable micro-structures and is ideal for the non-destructive inspection of compact but complex micro mechanic parts or electronic devices. When acquiring air force (AF) weapon systems, the department of defense now demands more performance for less cost. AF systems cannot be acquired simply for greater performance, but must be balanced against the cost to arrive at a "best value" investment. Increasing the insight into performance, cost and risk trade-offs early in the product design process is key to enabling affordable AF solutions to be created and deployed. Frontier Technology, Inc. (FTI) has matured a decision support infrastructure that is built upon the integration of DoD-accepted decision-making methods combined with unique, collaborative insight into technical parameters driving cost. The FTI integrated cost as an independent variable (I-CAIV) tool facilitates the documentation of both AF high-level capabilities as well as the generation of multiple stakeholder and/or warfighter priorities. This structure includes performance requirements that are linked to objectives and thresholds in a manner that enables users to understand how requirements "drive" cost during the design process. FTI has developed this collaborative infrastructure from multiple DoD SBIRs focused on different aspects of affordability analysis. The Air Force, Army, and Navy have awarded SBIR efforts to mature collaborative infrastructure and integrate different DoD community-accepted data sources into the I-CAIV process and framework. These investments have resulted in a tool that can be used to visualize performance, cost, risk and schedule of multiple alternatives in threedimensionsidentifying the "knee of the performance vs. cost curve.

With the development of microarray--based high-- throughput technologies for examining genetic and biological information en masse, biologists are now faced with making sense of large lists of genes identified from their biological experiments. There is a vital need for "system biology" approaches which can allow biologists to see new or unanticipated potential relationships which will lead to new hypotheses and eventual new knowledge. Finding and understanding relationships in this data is a problem well suited to visualisation. We augment genes with their associated terms from the Gene Ontology and visualise them using kernel Principal Component analysis with both specialised linear and Gaussian kernels. Our results show that this method can correctly visualise genes by their functional relationships and we describe the difference between using the linear and Gaussian kernels on the problem.

We have devloped a simple algorithm of counting the probability of each possible type of di-nucleotide occurring in a DNA sequence to determining homologs and phylogeny between mammals. A 2-dimensional representation was developed for visualization. This method does not require any DNA alignment or for the DNA sequences to be of the same length. We applied our tools to determining homologs between related zinc finger structures, as well as determining mammalian phylogeny. We also demonstrate this method's ability to classifying dissimilar DNA sequences. Likely future work along these lines will be to increase our vector to include dimensions for other variables such as fractal dimension, large automated DNA searches, and segmenting the DNA sequence before calculating our vector in order to keep some position data.

In our efforts to solve ever more challenging problems through computational techniques, the scale of our compute systems continues to grow. As we approach petascale, it becomes increasingly important that all the resources in the system be used as efficiently as possible, not just the floating-point units. Because of hardware, software, and usability challenges, storage resources are often one of the most poorly used and performing components of today's compute systems. This situation can be especially true in the case of the analysis phases of scientific workflows. In this paper we discuss the impact of large-scale data on visual analysis operations and examine a collection of approaches to I/O in the visual analysis process. First we examine the performance of volume rendering on a leadership-computing platform and assess the relative cost of I/O, rendering, and compositing operations. Next we analyze the performance implications of eliminating preprocessing from this example workflow. Then we describe a technique that uses data reorganization to improve access times for data-intensive volume rendering. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Streaming visualization for collaborative environments

Connecting expensive and scarce visual data analysis resources to end-users is a major challenge today. We describe a flexible mechanism for meeting this challenge based on commodity compression technologies for streaming video. The advantages of this approach include simplified application development, access to generic client components for viewing, and simplified incorporation of improved codecs as they become available. In this paper we report newly acquired experimental results for two different applications being developed to exploit this approach and test its merits. One is based on a new plugin for ParaView that adds video streaming cleanly and transparently to existing applications. The other is a custom volume rendering application with new remote capabilities. Using typical datasets under realistic conditions, we find the performance for both is satisfactory. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.
