The question posed by the 2014 LAK data Challenge is "What do analytics on learning analytics tell us?" The authors looked to take a two-pronged approach to this challenge. First, the authors wanted to use advanced analytical techniques on the corpus to make the "eat your own dog food" point. Since many of the EDM/LAK submissions explain advanced statistical or semantic analytic approaches, we wanted to utilize those same methods for our analysis. To that end, we used two natural language processing (NLP) tools to analyze the corpus of papers. First we used Latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) to extract clusters of terms from the content. Second, we used Turbo Topics to convert the LDA output into phrases (bi-grams and tri-grams). The use of these NLP tools allowed us to execute the second part of our approach to the challenge. Once the corpus was aggregated as topics, we used Tableau to visually inspect the corpus for trends. In addition to standard descriptive visualizations, we were able to identify trends in the corpus topics from 2008 through 2013. Most interesting is that with both EDM and LAK, we noticed a trend of topic convergence after three years. Also, we were able to easily discern topic trends such as the increased popularity of "social" and "network," over the last three years, and the consistent appearance of 'Cognitive Tutor' related topics (e.g. intelligent tutoring, concept map). While these findings may not be unexpected, we believe that the ability to extract and visualize these outcomes is unique. Copyright © 2014 for the individual papers by the papers' authors.

The construction of control chart for PM10 functional data

In this paper, a statistical procedure to construct a control chart for monitoring air quality (PM10) using functional data is proposed. A set of daily indices that represent the daily PM10 curves were obtained using Functional Principal Component analysis (FPCA). By means of an iterative charting procedure, a reference data set that represented a stable PM10 process was obtained. The data were then used as a reference for monitoring future data. The application of the procedure was conducted using seven-year (2004–2010) period of recorded data from the Klang air quality monitoring station located in the Klang Valley region of Peninsular Malaysia. The study showed that the control chart provided a useful visualization tool for monitoring air quality and was capable in detecting abnormality in the process system. As in the case of Klang station, the results showed that with reference to 2004–2008, the air quality (PM10) in 2010 was better than that in 2009.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze efficiency and productivity growth of university libraries so that deficiencies can be highlighted and possible strategies can be evolved to improve the performances. The study applies data envelopment analysis and Malmquist productivity index to explore the operation performances of decision making units. data envelopment analysis has been widely employed in a variety of disciplines as efficiency or performance measurement tool for comparing a set of entities such as firms, banks, hospitals, nations and organizations. The method, however, doesn't provide the grouping information on the efficient units or inefficient units. To solve the problem we propose a new approach based on super-efficient data envelopment analysis and clustering model, and present the results of an empirical analysis using the data of 29 Korea university libraries from 2008 to 2012. The results show that about 45% of the libraries are efficient and about 28% have the productivity growth improvement during the period of 2008/2012. In addition, the results show that the proposed approach solves the problem of conventional data envelopment analysis method and makes it possible to categorize the libraries having similar performance.

During 2008, the Institute for P-12 Engineering Research and Learning (INSPIRE) began a research project that started with 19 teachers and more than 200 students who were educated, interviewed, and assessed for STEM learning. This longitudinal study grew fast, gathering numerous pieces of data from 168 teachers and more than 3,000 students during the five-year treatment. This information growth led to a need for data management improvement. However, there are few database structures available for gathering school-related research. This paper presents lessons learned during the process of database construction and improvement for supporting project data consolidation. The process of construction and development included structural changes to provide an organization commensurate with schools' clusters, domains, and strata, all of which occur organically in the school setting. The database construction also included program development for uploading and cleaning large amounts of information;application analysis for defining an appropriate tool;and improvements for user information visualization. The analysis of lessons learned includes a discussion of major changes within the database and benefits of creating program codes within this tool. The discussion ends addressing the implications of having a structured and automatized yet flexible database tool designed for school settings.

This paper is about surveying of the geodetic deformation network, subsequent data processing and carrying out of the deformation analysis of the stability or instability of the reference points in the surroundings of the Cierny Vah upper dam. The geodetic deformation network was measured by the static method of the GNSS technology using dual-frequency receivers along with subsequent post-processing. The deformation network measurement results were processed both as separate and bivariate data sets for the years 2008 and 2011. The network deformation analysis was carried out with the graphic visualization of the stability of the reference points. At present, the UTCN03 coordinate system is used for the needs of the Land Registry and with time is highly likely to completely replace the S-UTCN coordinate system. For the year 2011 as well as consecutive years, measurements carried out at the reference points of this water reservoir will also be made in the UTCN03 coordinate system.

Articulatory data can nowadays be obtained using a wide range of techniques, such as real-time magnetic resonance (RT-MRI), enabling acquisitions of large amounts of data. A major challenge arises: analysing these new large data sets to extract meaningful information regarding speech production in an expedite and replicable way. Traditional approaches such as superimposing vocal tract profiles and qualitatively characterizing relevant properties and differences, although providing valuable information, are rather inefficient and subjective. Therefore, analysis must evolve towards a more automated, quantitative approach. To tackle this issue we propose the use of objective measures to compare the configurations assumed by the vocal tract during the production of different sounds. The proposed framework provides quantitative data regarding differences pertaining meaningful regions under the influence of various articulators. Visual representation of such data is a key part of the proposal and some concrete forms of visualization are proposed to depict the differences found and corresponding direction of change. Application examples concerning the articulatory characterization of EP vowels are presented with promising results, paving the way towards automated and objective analyses of articulatory data.

The study object is wheat. Through the observation and analysis on the morphological structure of wheat plant, the concepts of macrostate, substate and microstate are put forward, the wheat growth mechanism model is established, and thus the description and control of wheat morphogenesis process could be realized. Based on the branch structure characteristics of plant, the wheat morphological data model based on axis structure is proposed to realize the structural storage of plant topological structure and organ morphological feature data. On this basis, based on the thought of "growth model - morphological feature model - geometric modeling - display model", the technical framework of wheat form visualization is established and on the VC++ platform, the virtual wheat growth system is built with OpenGL. The running result of the system shows that wheat morphological feature can be well simulated with the system to realize the virtual display of the growth process in the individual growth period of wheat. © 2013 IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

Scientific discovery is nowadays driven by large-scale simulations running on massively parallel high-performance computing (HPC) systems. These applications each generate a large amount of data, which then needs to be post-processed for example for data mining or visualization. Unfortunately, the computing platform used for post processing might be different from the one on which the data is initially generated, introducing the challenge of moving large amount of data between computing platforms. This is especially challenging when these two platforms are geographically separated since the data needs to be moved between computing facilities. This is even more critical when scientists tightly couple their domain specific applications with a post processing application. The paper presents a solution for the data transfer between MPI applications using a dedicated wide area network (WAN) terabit infrastructure. The proposed solution is based on parallel access to data files and the Message Passing Inter-face (MPI) over the Common Communication Infrastructure (CCI) for the data transfer over a routed infrastructure. In the context of this research, the Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is targeted for the transfer of data between DOE national laboratories. The National Institute for Computational Sciences (NICS) at the University of Tennessee currently operates two computational resources for the eXtreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE), Kraken, a 112,896-core Cray XT5 for general purpose computation, and Nautilus, a 1,024-core SGI Altix UV 1000 for data analysis and visualization. We analyze a year's worth of accounting logs for Kraken and Nautilus to understand how users take advantage of these two systems and how analysis jobs differ from general HPC computation We find that researchers take advantage of the flexibility offered by these systems, running a wide variety of jobs at many scales and using the full range of core counts and available memory for their jobs. The jobs on Nautilus tend to use less walltime and more memory per core than the jobs run on Kraken. Additionally, researchers are more likely to run interactive jobs on Nautilus than on Kraken. Small jobs experience a good quality of service on both systems. This information can be used for the management and allocation of time on existing HPC and analysis systems as well as for planning for deploying future HPC and analysis systems. © 2012 ACM.
