In this study, techniques to measure EEG and fMRI simultaneously were investigated and P300 responses evoked by visual stimuli were examined. Event-related analysis was applied to combine the high temporal resolution of the EEG with the high spatial resolution of the fMRI, which may allow estimation of the temporal change in the activation of multiple cortical areas. A time scheme of stimulus presentation combined with an MRI scan was designed, taking into consideration the temporal delay between the generation of the P300 potential and the BOLD response. Three pattern oddball paradigm using standard, target and novel letter stimuli was performed, a technique in which subjects responded to rare target-letters but not to frequent standard- and rare novel-letters. Noises arising from the MRI scan and cardio-ballistic artifacts were removed from the raw data of the EEG by subtraction of the time-averaged waveforms of those artifacts. In comparing the grand average response of the EEG evoked by target events with those evoked by standard events, a significant difference was found in latency range from 280 to 450 ms (P

This study introduces a new approach for the detection of nonlinear Granger causality between dynamical systems. The approach is based on embedding the multivariate (MV) time series measured from the systems X and Y by means of a sequential, non-uniform procedure, and on using the corrected conditional entropy (CCE) as unpredictability measure. The causal coupling from X to Y is quantified as the relative decrease of CCE measured after allowing the series of X to enter the embedding procedure for the description of Y. The ability of the approach to quantify nonlinear causality is assessed on MV time series measured from simulated dynamical systems with unidirectional coupling (the Rössler-Lorenz deterministic system) and bidirectional coupling (two coupled stochastic systems). The method is then applied to real magnetoencephalographic data measured during a visuo-tactile cognitive experiment, showing values of causal coupling consistent with the hypothesis of a cross-processing of different sensory modalities.

Visual codebook has been popular in object classification as well as action analysis. However, its performance is often sensitive to the codebook size that is usually predefined. Moreover, the codebook generated by unsupervised methods, e.g., K-means, often suffers from the problem of ambiguity and weak efficiency. In other words, the visual codebook contains a lot of noisy and/or ambiguous words. In this paper, we propose a novel method to address these issues by constructing a compact but effective visual codebook using sparse reconstruction. Given a large codebook generated by K-means, we reformulate it in a sparse manner, and learn the weight of each word in the original visual codebook. Since the weights are sparse, they naturally introduce a new compact codebook. We apply this compact codebook to action recognition tasks and verify it on the widely used Weizmann action database. The experimental results show clearly the benefits of the proposed solution.

Patch-based face recognition is a robust method which aims to tackle illumination changes, pose changes and partial occlusion at the same time. In this paper, we analyzed the effects of different dimension reduction and normalization techniques for patch-based face recognition. Apart from previously used dimension reduction methods such as DCT and PCA, we have applied NPCA and NNDA at the feature extraction stage. Following the feature extraction, feature fusion or decision fusion can be applied at the recognition stage. In this study, we have shown that decision fusion outperforms feature fusion which is previously used in patch-based face recognition. For decision fusion, we proposed novel method for calculating weights for the weighted sum rule. We obtained the highest recognition rates by applying NNDA for dimension reduction, norm division for normalization and VAWfor assigning weights to patches.

Clinical research with medical imaging typically involves large-scale data analysis with interdependent software toolsets tied together in a processing workflow. Numerous, complementary platforms are available, but these are not readily compatible in terms of workflows or data formats. Both image scientists and clinical investigators could benefit from using the framework which is a most natural fit to the specific problem at hand, but pragmatic choices often dictate that a compromise platform is used for collaboration. Manual merging of platforms through carefully tuned scripts has been effective, but exceptionally time consuming and is not feasible for large-scale integration efforts. Hence, the benefits of innovation are constrained by platform dependence. Removing this constraint via integration of algorithms from one framework into another is the focus of this work. We propose and demonstrate a light-weight interface system to expose parameters across platforms and provide seamless integration. In this initial effort, we focus on four platforms Medical Image analysis and visualization (MIPAV), Java Image Science Toolkit (JIST), command line tools, and 3D Slicer. We explore three case studies: (1) providing a system for MIPAV to expose internal algorithms and utilize these algorithms within JIST, (2) exposing JIST modules through self-documenting command line interface for inclusion in scripting environments, and (3) detecting and using JIST modules in 3D Slicer. We review the challenges and opportunities for light-weight software integration both within development language (e.g., Java in MIPAV and JIST) and across languages (e.g., C/C++ in 3D Slicer and shell in command line tools).

This paper is focused on proving the concept that Visually Evoked Potential (VEP) signals registered during experiments with mental task execution can be used for discrimination of individuals. The viability of the VEP-based person identification was successfully tested for a data base of 13 persons. Among various classifiers tested, Support Vector Machine (SVM) with Radial Basis Function (RBF) exhibits the best performance. Our study revealed that the duration of the VEPs required for a reliable identification is crucial for real time implementation of the proposed biometry paradigm. A post processing procedure is formulated in order to overcome the problem of static classification. Our ultimate goal is not to compete with the conventional biometry (such as fingerprint, iris or palm recognition systems) but to design a VEP -based biometry modality as a supplement (“a second opinion”) in clinical conditions. It could be used to verify a patient's identity in medical records, prior to medical procedures or to detect early in advance abnormal mental states of the patient.

Objective: Ascertain relations between brain responses elicited by stimuli of different modalities (visual and audiological). The stimuli used were based on some of the basic elements and concepts of the visual syntax, regarding to the Gestalt theory, and an audiological grammar based on the clinical protocols. Methods: We used Event-Related Potentials for assessing the brain's electrical response to visual and auditory stimuli. Materials: Biopac Systems Mp 150 - data acquisition unit “***”; universal interface module “UIM100C”; stimulator module “STM100C”, two electroencephalogram amplifier modules “EEG100C”; Ag-AgCL lead electrodes - AcqKnowledge 3.9.0 (software); SuperLab 4.0 (software) and MatlabR2008B. Results: Interim results presented in form of waveforms representing the average and standard deviation of all signals acquired for each type of stimulus. Conclusions: We can visually conclude that different modalities elicit different waveforms and certain stimuli have a more defined response than others.

Internet shopping, a strong alternative to traditional ¿go, see, touch and buy¿ shopping, has been one of the mostly used facilities of the Internet. Several online shopping systems serve internet users all around the world and enable people to get the products they need with a small effort. Internet shopping can be considered as ¿see and buy¿ retailing. While the ¿see¿ part is implemented by the expertise and imagination of Web designers, different payment schemes have been devised for the ¿buy¿ part. The most used media are online credit card transaction systems. Several different methodologies have been developed for credit card transactions. However, research has shown that most of internet users do not fully trust credit card payment systems because of financial risks such as loss of money. Various approaches have been performed in order to gain the consumers' trust in credit card transactions; but no foolproof solution has been found to overcome the weaknesses in those systems. This paper proposes a new solution that combines biometric ID card with online credit card transactions. Since the implementation details such as the type and the matching algorithm of the biometrics data might vary between countries because of the project requirements and laws, the proposed system remains local for the each country that might adopt the solution. To elucidate the proposed system and provide a concrete example, we used Turkish e-ID pilot system as the identity verification module since it best fits the requirements of the framework.

During the last decade, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) considerably evolved: the amount of stored data explodes and the tools used to treat them have been improved. During the same period the arrival of very high spatial resolution satellite images (less than 1 meter) gives an inexhaustible source of information actually largely unexploited. We generally use images (satellite or airborne) in GIS by stacking vector information to visualize thematic maps but without exploiting the images as an information source. We propose in this paper a way to use satellite images as an information source in order to (i) produce new information layers (ii) validate some fusion operation made with the other information layers. We present an iterative algorithm to select and fuse layers (with eventually a relaxation). We use an homogeneity criterion based on local texture analysis to validate the selection. After running this algorithm, new information layers are produced using the images and depending on the previous fusions and selections. We apply this algorithm to search Ecological Units within forest in order to guide the research of observation samples for the underlying ecosystems.
