This paper presents MetroMap, a new graphical representation model for controlling and managing the software development process. Metromap uses metaphors and visual representation techniques to explore several key indicators in order to support problem detection and resolution. The resulting visualization addresses diverse management tasks, such as tracking of deviations from the plan, analysis of patterns of failure detection and correction, overall assessment of change management policies, and estimation of product quality. The proposed visualization uses a metaphor with a metro map along with various interactive techniques to represent information concerning the software development process and to deal efficiently with multivariate visual queries. Finally, the paper shows the implementation of the tool in JavaFX with data of a real project and the results of testing the tool with the aforementioned data and users attempting several information retrieval tasks. The conclusion shows the results of analyzing user response time and efficiency using the MetroMap visualization system. The utility of the tool was positively evaluated.

It is desirable for endovascular surgery simulation to describe with quantitative data the interaction between the catheter and the blood vessel model wall to make an objective evaluation of the procedure. Photoelastic stress analysis in straight segments of multi-layered models was used for that purpose. In this research we study the error introduced by stress direction on the magnitude measurements, for photoelastic stress analysis. And we propose a scanner for three dimensional visualization of photoelastic stress analysis. As result, we quantified that the maximum contribution of error from stress direction in the first half of the fringe is 2.52% for the stress magnitude measurements. Three-dimensional stress visualization was obtained in segment of straight vasculature with an average error in sample slices of 10.73%, 4.55% and 3.18% for inner pressures of 80, 120 and 160mmHg respectively.

With the rapid development of IT data driven experiments and simulations have become very advanced and complicated. The amount and complexity of scientific data increase exponentially. Nowadays the challenge is to efficiently support scientists who generate more data than they can possibly look at and understand. This requires not only high-performance visualization and feature extraction techniques but also efficient and intuitive management of available data and underlying computational resources. Consequently, Service Oriented Architectures and workflow management systems are becoming popular solutions for the deployment of e-Science Infrastructures aimed to assist in exploration and analysis of large scientific data. In this paper, we compare two transport models of workflow execution for data-intensive medical visualizations that rely on web services. The image-based analysis of vascular disorders served as a case study for this project. We applied a service oriented approach to construct distributed visualization pipelines, which allow visualization experts to develop visualizations to view and interact with large medical data sets. Moreover, end-users (i.e., medical specialists) can explore these visualizations irrespective of their geographical location and available computing resources. The paper reports on the current implementation status and presents our main findings. (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Spatialization is a special kind of visualization that projects multidimensional data into low-dimensional representational spaces by making use of spatial metaphors. Spatialization methods face a dual challenge: on the one hand, to apply dimension reduction techniques in order to overcome the limitations of the representational space, and on the other hand, to provide a metaphoric framework for the visualization of information at different levels of granularity. This paper investigates how granularity is modeled and visualized by the existing spatialization methods, and introduces a new approach based on kernel density estimation and landscape metaphor. According to our approach, clusters of multidimensional data are revealed by landscape "relief", and are hierarchically organized into different levels of granularity through landscape "smoothness." In addition, it is demonstrated, herein, how the exploration of information at different levels of granularity is supported by appropriate operations in the framework of an interactive spatialization environment prototype.

The first step of any information visualization system is to enable end user to import their dataset into the system. However, non expert user are faced to the difficult task of choosing how their data should/could be transform to be used in these Infovis systems. In that paper we address the case where end users want to use dataset in tabular format. We propose a novel method for automatic graph generation from these datasets. That method consists in first building taxonomy of dimensions. Then, that taxonomy is used to provide to user a system that enables to interactively navigate into the set of possible data transformation.

This paper discusses the problem of constructing positive cubic spline interpolation. To obtain smooth curve for positive data, piecewise rational cubic function has been used. In the description of rational interpolant, two families of parameters have been constrained to preserve positive shape of the data, the rational spline scheme has a unique representation. In addition, to preserve the shape of positive data sets, the degree of smoothness attained is C-2

In this paper, we present TransDec, an end-to-end data-driven system which enables spatiotemporal queries in transportation systems with dynamic, real-time and historical data. TransDec fuses a variety of real-world spatiotemporal datasets including massive traffic sensor data, trajectory data, transportation network data, and point-of-interest data to create an immersive and realistic virtual model of a transportation system. With TransDec, we address the challenges in visualization, monitoring, querying and analysis of dynamic and large-scale transportation data in both time and space.

We present MTVis, a multi-touch interactive tree visualization system. The multi-touch interface display hardware is built using the LED-LP technology, and the tree layout is based on RINGS, but enhanced with multi-touch interactions. We describe the features of the system, and how the multi-touch interface enhances the user's experience in exploring the tree data structure. In particular, the multi-touch interface allows the user to simultaneously control two child nodes of the root, and rotate them so that some nodes are magnified, while preserving the layout of the tree. We also describe the other meaninful touch screen gestures the users can use to intuitively explore the tree.

As the long-term marine survey and research, especially with the development of new marine environment monitoring technologies, prodigious amounts of complex marine environment data keep continued and rapid growth. This paper recommends an integrative visualization solution to those data, to enhance the visual display of data and data archives, and to develop a joint use of those distributed data from different organizations or communities. Following this strategy, after the analysis of web services technologies and the concept definition of marine information gird, this paper focuses on the spatiotemporal visualization method and proposes a process-oriented spatiotemporal visualization method. It also provides an original visualization architecture which is integrative and based on the explored technologies. Then it shows how the marine environment data are organized based on the spatiotemporal visualization method, and how the organized data are represented for use with web services and stored in a reusable fashion. Finally, the prototype system for the marine environment data of the South China Sea provides visualization of Argo floats, sea surface temperature fields, sea current fields, salinity, in-situ investigation data and ocean stations. The integration visualization architecture is illustrated on the prototype system which highlights the process-oriented temporal visualization method, which proves the good effect of the architecture and the method promoted by this work.
