With the prevalence of mobile computing systems and location based services, the research interest on spatiotemporal data has significantly increased, as evidenced by the collection of huge amounts of movement data. Consequently, this type of data raises several issues, namely in the research area of geographic information visualization. Despite the existence of several visual analysis techniques for the exploration of movement data, it is still unclear how usable and useful these techniques are, how can they be improved, and for which situations are these techniques most suitable. In this paper, we present current open challenges on the visual analysis of movement data, and the Ph.D work in progress aiming to address these problems. Our work will explore several factors that may affect the users' performance, and, based on those factors we will propose a taxonomy and an evaluation framework covering different tasks and techniques.

This paper presents a study on the integration of heterogeneous sensor nodes into a wireless sensor network and its use in providing real-time information about water conditions, contributing to water resources management. The work focuses on presenting the methodology used to automatically communicate, parse and store the sensor network data and its application to a real case study. The development of a new platform for efficient management and analysis of the gathered data and its use for automatic assertion of real-time model forecasts quality against stored data is also presented. On-going work on the development of a mobile application for real-time data access in mobile devices is also anticipated.

This paper is about surveying of the geodetic deformation network, subsequent data processing and carrying out of the deformation analysis of the stability or instability of the reference points in the surroundings of the Cierny Vah upper dam. The geodetic deformation network was measured by the static method of the GNSS technology using dual-frequency receivers along with subsequent post-processing. The deformation network measurement results were processed both as separate and bivariate data sets for the years 2008 and 2011. The network deformation analysis was carried out with the graphic visualization of the stability of the reference points. At present, the UTCN03 coordinate system is used for the needs of the Land Registry and with time is highly likely to completely replace the S-UTCN coordinate system. For the year 2011 as well as consecutive years, measurements carried out at the reference points of this water reservoir will also be made in the UTCN03 coordinate system.

Articulatory data can nowadays be obtained using a wide range of techniques, such as real-time magnetic resonance (RT-MRI), enabling acquisitions of large amounts of data. A major challenge arises: analysing these new large data sets to extract meaningful information regarding speech production in an expedite and replicable way. Traditional approaches such as superimposing vocal tract profiles and qualitatively characterizing relevant properties and differences, although providing valuable information, are rather inefficient and subjective. Therefore, analysis must evolve towards a more automated, quantitative approach. To tackle this issue we propose the use of objective measures to compare the configurations assumed by the vocal tract during the production of different sounds. The proposed framework provides quantitative data regarding differences pertaining meaningful regions under the influence of various articulators. Visual representation of such data is a key part of the proposal and some concrete forms of visualization are proposed to depict the differences found and corresponding direction of change. Application examples concerning the articulatory characterization of EP vowels are presented with promising results, paving the way towards automated and objective analyses of articulatory data.

Based on the fourth-generation GIS technology and 3D visualization technology, using the object-oriented programming language Visual C++ as development tools, in the Windows operating platform, developed a Digital Ventilation System of Mine, and applied to the actual mine. Applications show that the system has a powerful analysis capabilities and 3D information processing functions, can be a true reflection of the actual state of mine ventilation, which can be provide an intuitive, timely and reliable information for the day-to-day management of mine ventilation. The digital mine ventilation system is a very huge and complex dynamic space network system. It's an important issue for the mine enterprise to effectively control the min ventilation system in order to maintain the safe and efficient production of the mine. In particular, when a disaster happens in the underground mine, it's significant to determine the disaster area and ventilation status of relative networks to decision-making and to victim rescuing. Extending to every corner of the mine, the mine ventilation system is characterized by the attribute of spatial and geographic data. Therefore, it's necessary to develop a practical digital ventilation system for the mine, based on the advanced GIS technology and 3D visualization technology, in order to conduct real-time monitoring, analysis, control, display and simulation, and, also, in order to provide direct, rapid information inquiry and decision-making support for the administrative staff ([1]).
