Mining of repeated patterns from HTML documents is the key step towards Web-based data mining and knowledge extraction. Many web crawling applications need efficient repeated patterns mining techniques to generate their wrapper automatically. Existing approaches such as tree matching and string matching can detect repeated patterns with high precision, but their performance is still a challenge for practical web crawling applications. In this paper, we propose an efficient approach for mining repeated patterns based on indent shape of HTML document. Indent shape is a novel and simple model of HTML document, in which tandem repeated waves have strong association with the repeated patterns to be detected. By scanning an indent shape with a horizontal indent-line from bottom to top, the tandem repeated waves are identified by filtering the wave segments with low self-similarities. After that the boundary of HTML code corresponding to repeated patterns can be identified, which could be transformed to regular expressions formal-defined easily. Extensive experiments on two practical data sets retrieved from Internet show that our approach achieves high efficiency significantly, and its precision performance is also generally better than the existing approaches.

Analytics technologies that mine large amount of structured and unstructured data to gain insights are becoming increasingly important to businesses. In particular, the growing availability of enterprise proprietary data, coupled with publically aggregated or acquired data allows analytics to gain insights not only about the enterprise itself, but also cross companies, industry, and cross industries. The impact of such analysis is that it is transforming business processes and driving strategic business decision making and business model transformations, all of which overshadow more traditional low level, siloed, tactical optimizations. Such analytics trends are driving shifts in the overall analytics ecosystem that includes data providers and aggregators, analytics technology and service providers, clients in different industries, partners, and other related communities, e.g., visualization providers, academia, open source development communities. In particular, we have observed the emergence of two new service entities in the overall ecosystem: 1) New forms of data services that aggregate and provide accesses to a wide range of public and private data by partnering with data providers, aggregators, and clients are emerging. We call such services "data as a Service (DaaS)" in this paper. DaaS can leverage commonly managed Cloud and Web based infrastructure and tools as well as hosted and Web delivery models to offer rich set of data processing, management, and access services, in addition to in house implementations. 2) On top of DaaS, one can create high value analytics services that can boost productivity and create value for all. Such services may include Business Intelligence reporting, text analytics, and advanced analytics such as predictive modeling, all made in composable forms to allow for direct consumption, integration and customizations. We call such services "Analytics as a Service (AaaS)". DaaS and AaaS help to maximize value for the overall ecosystem

A new emerging field, that of visual stylometry of art, proposes to apply image analysis and machine learning tools to high-resolution digital images of artwork in order to assist art connoisseurs in determining the painting's likely creator. The premise is that each artist's brushwork is likely to contain features that are characteristic of the artist's unique habitual physical movements; these features could be identified and characterized through machine learning. In this paper, we describe a new technique for this problem. We extract, as features for our classifier, parameters of both Hidden Markov Tree models and linear predictor models of the painting's wavelet coefficients. We then use the FINE dimensionality reduction technique [1] to produce an unsupervised low-dimensional embedding of the data. Tests on two dataset consisting of over 100 high-resolution digital images of impressionist paintings by Van Gogh and contemporaries shows good separation between paintings of Van Gogh and others is achieved via this unsupervised process. We further show (through comparison with the alternative) that our method benefits greatly from (1) using only background sections of each painting in our analysis, (2) the FINE technique, and (3) the use of both HMT and linear predictor features together in the same analysis. All three of these technique choices are new in this paper. We hope that our method can be a tool, used carefully in conjunction with the connoisseur's expertise and other examinations, to determine a painting's true authorship.

The degree of severity of several psychopathologies coming along with cognitive deficits often impedes the adequate execution of complex cognitive tasks, demanding for objective analysis of cognitive function in an easy-to-follow paradigm for uncooperative patients. The broad availability of electroencephalography (EEG) provides an auspicious base for the development of a fast and reliable tool for the objective diagnosis of pathological cognitive limitations. In the development of the paradigm and follow-up data analysis, we focussed on the objective assessment of the most common cognitive deficits in psychopathological disorders, i.e., limitations in working-memory span and the corresponding loss of attentional resources as well as deficits in facial recognition, contributing to severe social cuts. In a passive face recognition task, we monitored the N170 component of late visual evoked potentials (VEP) in healthy subjects for establishing a methodological base for the diagnostics of cognitive deficits in patients. In line with our preliminary work, we were able to demonstrate a loss of phasic coherence in the single-trial analysis of subsequent visual stimuli during the repetitive face presentation. The novelty event however involuntarily captures attentional resources, resulting in an afresh increase in intertrial phase coherence. These results provide a new viable methodology for accessing the novelty-effect in cognitive deficit patients using a passive visual ERP paradigm of involuntary attentional guidance and habituation.

Objective: To study whether the activity of default mode network in children shows anatomical consistency with the adult, and if not, then find out the difference and possible reason. Methods: Ten healthy children underwent an axial T 1 -weighted FLAIR scan and two fMRI scans with different flashing checkerboard stimulation. After data preprocessing and statistical analysis, pixel level t-test was used to screening deactivated brain regions. Results: Posterior cingulate/precuneous, inferior parietal cortex, thalamus and middle tempral gyrus showed consistent deactivation throughout the whole process. Some other brain areas, such as superior and medial frontal cortex, fusiform gyrus and insula only deactivated in partial stimuli. Conclusions: Pediatric resting-state brain activity showed both commonalities and disparities with adults. The default mode network anatomically formed at a relatively early age, but a stable functional connectivity is strengthened gradually and formed later. Fusiform gyrus's key role in color perception was confirmed. Thalamus showed obvious deactivation. We suggest it may be partially due to children's immature brain and the intermediary brain tissue is more important.

Hospital Kiosk is a useful means to decrease human resource and to extend service hour to non-working hour for the stance of hospital and to obtain useful services without time loss in waiting in lines for the stance of user. However, various kind of information kiosks are respectively installed with independent functions, and they have bad usability due to complexity in manipulate and unclear information architecture. In this study, we tried to analyze usability and respective functions of each kiosk and aimed to suggest alternative information architecture for the integrated hospital kiosk. We categorized users as patient, guardian and visitor and we conducted usability test and in-depth interview with each group of users. Based on result analysis from the research, we could suggest proper information architecture for the integrated user centered hospital kiosk. The new information architecture for the integrated hospital kiosk has better accessibility to the menus which reflects user's preemptive needs and it include more specific information that can support user tasks.

Automatic scene categorization can benefit various aerial video processing applications. This paper addresses the problem of predicting the scene category from aerial video frames using a prior model learned from satellite imagery. We show that local and global features in the form of line statistics and 2-D power spectrum parameters respectively can characterize the aerial scene well. The line feature statistics and spatial frequency parameters are useful cues to distinguish between different urban scene categories. We learn the scene prediction model from high-resolution satellite imagery to test the model on the Columbus Surrogate Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (CSUAV) dataset collected by a high-altitude wide area UAV sensor platform. We compare the proposed features with the popular Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) features. Our experimental results show that the proposed approach outperforms the SIFT model when the training and testing are conducted on disparate data sources.

This paper reports on the extension of our previous work on feature-based opinion mining for Thai language. In this paper, we present an approach for automatically constructing two main lexicons: features and polar words based on syntactic pattern analysis. The evaluation is performed with a case study on hotel reviews. The experimental results show that our approach is effective in performing its task. To illustrate the potential application, we implement a system called HotelOpinion for summarizing the hotel reviews written in the Thai language. Our system can also generate a comparison between hotels based upon the user's preferred features and then present the results in a user-friendly visualization. Results from our system can be used to determine public perceptions regarding selected hotels in order to allow the business to improve their customer intimacy and satisfaction.

We explore novel directions for incorporating phonetic transcriptions into sub-unit based statistical models for sign language recognition. First, we employ a new symbolic processing approach for converting sign language annotations, based on HamNoSys symbols, into structured sequences of labels according to the Posture-Detention-Transition-Steady Shift phonetic model. Next, we exploit these labels, and their correspondence with visual features to construct phonetics-based statistical sub-unit models. We also align these sequences, via the statistical sub-unit construction and decoding, to the visual data to extract time boundary information that they would lack otherwise. The resulting phonetic sub-units offer new perspectives for sign language analysis, phonetic modeling, and automatic recognition. We evaluate this approach via sign language recognition experiments on an extended Lemmas Corpus of Greek Sign Language, which results not only in improved performance compared to pure data-driven approaches, but also in meaningful phonetic sub-unit models that can be further exploited in interdisciplinary sign language analysis.
