Reliable latency estimation of a given component is essential for single-trial analysis of event-related potentials (ERPs). Peak-picking is a straightforward method for latency determination in single trials. The peak-picking method has so far been carried out according to the maximal-peak strategy, which looks for the largest deflection in a low-pass filtered epoch within a predefined time window. We introduced another peak-picking criterion and named it as the closest-peak strategy in the present study. According to the strategy, the peak of an ERP component in single trials is defined as the peak timely closest to the average-ERP peak. The main results derived from visual stimulus ERP data at POz showed that: 1) the single-trial P1 latency estimated by the closest-peak strategy was timely concentrated around the P1 peak in average ERP while the P1 peak extracted by the maximal-peak strategy distributed relatively scattered on the time axis; 2) the P1 amplitude in average ERP acquired by the maximal-peak strategy was larger than that acquired by the closest-peak strategy at 5% significance level. Although the conclusion is premature, this comparative study suggested that the closest-peak strategy may be more suitable and reliable for peak-picking method.

Semantic Web and ontology have received increased attention in recent years. Various tools on modularization have been developed. However, selecting an appropriate ontology to fit a given context is difficult because assumptions for the approaches vary greatly. Therefore, a method that can compare modularization tools and help screen the most suitable approach is highly desired. In this research, a new set of evaluation criteria for selecting appropriate ontology modularization tools is proposed. Three aspects of tool evaluation, namely, tool performance, data performance, and usability are presented. This study is an empirical analysis of a number of modularization tools. Experimental results indicate that the proposed evaluation criteria for ontology modularization tools are valid and effective. It provides an evaluation method for ontology modularization, enabling ontology engineers to compare different modularization tools and easily choose the appropriate approach to produce quality ontology modules.

Developmental dyslexia has usually been characterized as having difficulties learning grapheme-phoneme correspondence and applying the mappings. This study investigates form-sound awareness in Chinese reading-impaired children in terms of regularity, consistency and lexicality effects using event-related potentials (ERP) and time-frequency analysis (TFA). Preliminary data from two Cantonese-speaking male children, one with reading impairment (PR) and one with normal reading performance (CA), performing a character recognition task were collected. ERP results indicated that CA showed a lexicality effect at N400 that was not evident in PR. TFA showed that CA exhibited greater event-related synchronization (ERS) and phase coherence at theta and gamma bands suggesting greater cognitive demand in processing pseudo and irregular characters. An opposite pattern was observed for PR, where greater effort was needed to retrieve information related to real and regular characters whilst failing to respond to pseudo and irregular characters. Greater ERS and phase coherence was also observed for real, pseudo and regular characters at 350-450ms at theta suggesting adequate access to phonological and semantic information for CA compared to PR. Whereas PR showed greater ERS and phase coherence at earlier and later time intervals. These initial findings suggest that PR may have weaker semantic representations and may be less sensitive to the internal structure of characters and its relationship with sounds.

This paper provides an overview of an ambulatory 24-hour physiologic recording system supporting ecological momentary assessments (EMAs) which include visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in the subject's normal living environment. The PDA-based system's EMA methods include oral recording, questionnaire, and reaction-time-type attention testing. This report focuses on the system's unique capability of subject-administered VEP testing in the remote environment. Results reported include single-subject VEP waveforms recorded in the subject's home during the evening portion of a 24 hour period at scheduled times the subject was unaware of in advance. The VEP testing paradigm was a 100 trial, Go/NoGo type test. The visual stimuli were presented on the handheld PDA device with wireless stimulus marker trigger information being transmitted to the ambulatory EEG recording unit via a Bluetooth interface. Post-acquisition editing and analysis results demonstrate reliable ambulatory VEPs can be obtained. The system implementation is a further extension of our work investigating the identification of stress-related physiologic marker information in a primary caregiver's home environment. The demonstrated EMA-based VEP recording capabilities added to our previously reported 24-hour ambulatory data collection platform (CAMAS) open the door to new opportunities supplementing studies in fields such as ambulatory psychophysiology and cognitive-neuroscience.

Balance retraining is a critical part of rehabilitation for many individuals following neuro-trauma such as stroke. The WeHab system described in this paper is a low-cost rehabilitation instrument suite centered around the Nintendo Wii Balance Board that has the potential to enhance rehabilitation for patients with balance disorders. Using the WeHab system, therapists can lead patients through normal rehabilitation exercises with the added benefit of visual biofeedback based on center of pressure location. Patient improvement can be tracked by the WeHab system through objective analysis of trends both within a single session and from one session to the next. Pilot data from several patients receiving inpatient therapy using the WeHab system at the Wound Care center at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, IN, indicate the potential benefit that the system could bring to balance rehabilitation. Specifically, the details of and results from sit-to-stand, weight-shifting, and stepping activities are presented for pilot subjects. Further expansion of the WeHab system is planned, including incorporation of auditory feedback. Future work also includes more structured studies of the effects of the WeHab system on balance recovery.

Attention has been supported to predict later effortful control [1]. Vohs & Baumeister proposed that stability in effortful control also been found from early childhood to adolescence [2]. Attention plays an important role in child development. In this paper, we are interested in modeling preschoolers' focus of attention by Computer-Supported Learning Devices (CSLD). The methodology of the study applied an experimental study on young children attention with and without CSLD. We have developed a system to estimate preschoolers' focus of attention by providing visual cues for actions. We invited five preschoolers with RFID-tagged gloves standing behind five tangible objects designed instant feedback technique to estimate their attention. In addition, we employ database to assess each individual's learning effectiveness. The system predicts preschoolers' focus of attention according to each individual's learning effectiveness. The system then presents each individual's learning outcomes on a projected screen in which the teacher simultaneously received an instant feedback of effective teaching. We have evaluated the system using the triangular data out of database, learning sheet, and in-depth interview. Results show that there are significant differences between group and gender. With CSLD, frequency analysis on attention is significantly more than control group children do (p=.001).

Combined with pattern recognition and information visualization technology, this paper proposes a visual classification method based on KPCA and parallel coordinate plot KPPCP. This method maps the raw data space into high-dimensional feature space by means of nuclear function, then the feature space is deal with PCA, finally the processed data is visualized in parallel coordinates. The experiment show that it can effectively extract the non-linear features from the raw data , enlarge the differences between the various categories, provide Interactive visualization, enhance the understanding of experts on the classification process and participation so as to get more effective classification.

OntoPlant is a virtual plant software package, which has been developed at Spatial Information Research Center of Fujian in Fuzhou University since 2002. The purpose of the software package is to provide an integrated software solution to realistic plant modelling, real-time scene rendering, growth simulation and applications at different scales from individual, stand (population, community) to landscape. Its key components are ParaTree, LSTree, VisForest, and ForestSIMA. The software package is implemented with VC++, OpenGL Graphics standard, while ForestSIMA is also based on ArcGIS ArcObjects developer kit. ParaTree and LSTree are core of OntoPlant. They are used to build individual plant model. ParaTree combines geometric modelling and parameterized modelling. The shape characteristic of tree organ is depicted with a group of parameters, the values of parameters can be edited by interactive graphical parameter curve component tool. This tool provides friendly interface and intuitive interactive means, namely, what you see is what you get. The ParaTree can simulate realistic 3D plants at any age or season by modifying the parameters, pruning the tree. It is adaptive to simulate the architecture of tree. It doesn’t require users to have much knowledge of biology. While the opposite is true for LSTree. LSTree is based on the theory of L-systems, which is faithful to the plant morphology and the physiological growth process. This system makes it possible to model the development of plants with efficiency and flexibility as a process of string rewriting. VisForest is a software platform for creating and editing 3D scenes. It allows the fusion of geospatial data (terrain, images) with 3D objects (plants and house) in a georeferenced environment, definition of 3D scene component, distribution density and form of plants. The major obstacle in discrimination between different groups of subjects in a common cognitive state, by functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), has been the high inter- subject functional and anatomical variability in the spatial patterns of brain activity. To overcome this, we have used two types of spatial descriptors that characterize the brain regions of interest (ROIs) involved in the cognitive tasks. They include, firstly three-dimensional invariant moment descriptors (3-DMIs), and secondly k-dimensional feature vectors based on concentric spheres. Both types of descriptors are applied to analyze the spatial patterns of cognitive activity of a challenging task and then to classify them across two different subject groups. SVM classifiers along with sequential floating forward feature selection technique are applied to the extracted descriptors of each ROI across the subjects. Our method is applied to experimental fMRI data with the aim of discriminating mental status of heroin IV (Intravenous) abusers and from of those in control subjects in a visual cue task which can induce drug craving. Our results demonstrate that 3-D texture of activation maps provide a good discrimination (with high accuracy) between healthy and addict group.

Based on the theory of nonlinear random dynamic and ship oscillatory motions, by analyzing the spectrum of the random ocean wave and the force of the ship, the roll and pitch motion equations were erected respectively, then the irregular waves were created according to the superposition theory. Meanwhile, the coupling motion between rolling and heaving was studied, then the time-domain responses were the driving data of the motions simulation. Using Visual Basic, the interaction interface was established. Using MATLAB, the motions were solved. Using Open GL the 3-D model of ship was described. We just need input the ship and environment parameters then the results will be displayed with the 2-D figures and the 3-D model quickly, then the visualization of ship motions simulation is achieved. The program developed can simulate 3-D ships and can be used for designers to analyze the properties of ship intuitively.
