data Collection by the People, for the People is a CHI 2011 workshop to explore data from the crowd, bringing together mobile crowdsourcing & participatory urbanism researchers with dataanalysis and visualization researchers. The workshop is two-day event beginning with day of field work in the city of Vancouver, trying out mobile crowdsourcing applications and dataanalysis tools. Participants are encouraged to contribute applications and tools which they wish to share. Our goal is to provoke discussion and brainstorming, enabling both data collection researchers and data manipulation/analysis researchers to benefit from mutually learned lessons about crowdsourced data.

Height fields are an important modeling and visualization tool in many applications and their exploration requires their display at interactive frame rates. This is hard to achieve even with high performance graphics computers due to their inherent geometric complexity. Typical solutions consist of using polygonal approximations of the height field to reduce the number of geometric primitives that need to be rendered. Starting from a rough approximation, a refinement process is operated until a desired level of detail is reached. In this work, we present a novel efficient algorithm that starts with an approximation that carries enough information about the height field so that only few refinement steps are needed to achieve any desired level of detail. Our initial approximation is a simple triangulation whose nodes are the critical points of the height field, that is the peaks, pits, and passes of the surface which give its overall shape. The extraction of critical points of the surface, which is a discrete structure, is done using a newly designed algorithm based on discrete Morse theory and computational homology algorithms.(1-3)

In this paper we discuss our preliminary experiences in designing a visual system for social dataanalysis in collaboration between citizens and municipal authorities through a web-based open government system. Based on the integration of theoretical models with findings from formative evaluations and stakeholder workshops with a prototype system, we present a multiperspective visualization model and user interface designs addressing specific requirements of social dataanalysis in heterogeneous stakeholder settings.
The immense increase of scientific databases, combined with the spread of open standards for service interfaces, has resulted in unprecedented opportunities of data exploration and exploitation for scientists. From a ...

A lot of companies carry out questionnaires. These questionnaires often have questions which need respondents to answer by free description. It is, however, inefficient for an analyzer to read whole texts to get outlines or classify them, or it is difficult to correctly analyze them without subjective biases. The authors have proposed "HK Graph" (Hierarchical Keyword Graph) which is a support tool for text mining. HK Graph can visualize the relationships among attributes and words with hierarchical graph structure based on frequency of co-occurrence. However, the result of HK Graph is not enough helpful for the analyzer to grasp the outlines of the texts and extract opinions from them, because it regards divided words as different ones unless they perfectly match and that makes the visualized result complicated. This paper presents a new visualization method for the HK Graph incorporating an aggregating words method based on concepts of words. An experiment is carried out by applying the proposed method to actual questionnaire data on disasters and studies the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper presents a simulation software for mechanical wave propagation phenomena and a visualization environment developed to help the analysis of the numerically synthesized dynamic solutions of boundary value problems of solid mechanics. The simulation software is used by researchers and engineers to study and gain insights into complex problems related to the mechanics of continuous media. The large amount of data generated by the numerical solution of wave propagation problems makes the interpretation of the results a hard daunting task without the support of techniques to graphically display these data. The visualization environment that was developed supports different visualization strategies of a variety of parameters and it has been used to improve the understanding of the simulation results and to validate the numerical simulator as well as the underlying mathematical-physical modeling.

Background: Recent advances in genomics and proteomics have allowed us to study the nuances of the Warburg effect - a long-standing puzzle in cancer energy metabolism - at an unprecedented level of detail. While modern next-generation sequencing technologies are extremely powerful, the lack of appropriate dataanalysis tools makes this study difficult. To meet this challenge, we developed a novel application for comparative analysis of gene expression and visualization of RNA-Seq data. Results: We analyzed two biological samples (normal human brain tissue and human cancer cell lines) with high-energy, metabolic requirements. We calculated digital topology and the copy number of every expressed transcript. We observed subtle but remarkable qualitative and quantitative differences between the citric acid (TCA) cycle and glycolysis pathways. We found that in the first three steps of the TCA cycle, digital expression of aconitase 2 (ACO2) in the brain exceeded both citrate synthase (CS) and isocitrate dehydrogenase 2 (IDH2), while in cancer cells this trend was quite the opposite. In the glycolysis pathway, all genes showed higher expression levels in cancer cell lines;and most notably, digital gene expression of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and enolase (ENO) were considerably increased when compared to the brain sample. Conclusions: The variations we observed should affect the rates and quantities of ATP production. We expect that the developed tool will provide insights into the subtleties related to the causality between the Warburg effect and neoplastic transformation. Even though we focused on well-known and extensively studied metabolic pathways, the dataanalysis and visualization pipeline that we developed is particularly valuable as it is global and pathway-independent.
