Numerical simulations running on very large High Performance Computer clusters still suffer from the I/O bottleneck. The cost of communication can overwhelm the cost of computation, and scales inversely with the number of processors used in the cluster. In previous work we have developed a multiresolution data model to help improve performance for visualizations of very large multi dimensional scientific data sets. In our approach, the data is represented as a multi level hierarchy. Reconstructive error analysis is used to identify regions in the data where the data loss is greatest. We have incorporated this data model into the OpenGGCM solar wind simulation environment. In this paper, we demonstrate that this approach can reduce the I/O and improve the overall performance of a large numerical simulation environment.1 © 2011 IEEE.

This paper presents the research and development of a new omni spatial visualization framework for the collaborative interrogation of the world's largest Buddhist textual canon, using the worlds' first panoramic stereoscopic visualization environment - the Advanced visualization and Interaction Environment (AVIE). The work is being undertaken at a new research facility, The Applied Laboratory for Interactive visualization and Embodiment (ALiVE), City University of Hong Kong. The dataset used is the Chinese Buddhist Canon, Koryo version (Tripitaka Korean a) in classical Chinese, the with 52 million glyphs carved on 83,000 printing blocks in 13th century Korea. The digitized version of this Canon (a project led by University of California Berkeley) contains metadata that links to geospatial positions, contextual images of locations referenced in the text, and to the original rubbings of the wooden blocks. Each character has been abstracted to a 'blue dot' to enable rapid search and pattern visualization. Omni spatial refers to the ability to distribute this data in 360-degrees around the user where the virtually presented visual space is in three dimensions (3D). The project's omni directional interactive techniques for corpora representation and interrogation offer a unique framework for enhanced cognition and perception in the analysis of this dataset. © 2011 IEEE.

In order to develop an evaluation system for foot arch type in the elderly using foot pressure distribution data, foot pressure distribution parameters were selected and the data thereby derived were discussed. Results from the study show that the midfoot area and pressure ratios were correlated to foot arch type determined by visual analysis and were not correlated to arch height parameters. It is assumed that foot pressure distribution parameters reflect a different phenomenon from that of arch height parameters. The inconsistency between them is considered to be a result of the effect of the forefoot arch on the arch height parameters.

Online remote visualization and steering of critical weather applications like cyclone tracking are essential for effective and timely analysis by geographically distributed climate science community. A steering framework for controlling the high-performance simulations of critical weather events needs to take into account both the steering inputs of the scientists and the criticality needs of the application including minimum progress rate of simulations and continuous visualization of significant events. In this work, we have developed an integrated user-driven and automated steering framework INST for simulations, online remote visualization, and analysis for critical weather applications. INST provides the user control over various application parameters including region of interest, resolution of simulation, and frequency of data for visualization. Unlike existing efforts, our framework considers both the steering inputs and the criticality of the application, namely, the minimum progress rate needed for the application, and various resource constraints including storage space and network bandwidth to decide the best possible parameter values for simulations and visualization.

The ATLAS Trigger and data Acquisition (TDAQ) infrastructure is responsible for filtering and transferring ATLAS experimental data from detectors to mass storage systems. It relies on a large, distributed computing system composed of thousands of software applications running concurrently. In such a complex environment, information sharing is fundamental for controlling applications behavior, error reporting and operational monitoring. During data taking, the streams of messages sent by applications and data published via information services are constantly monitored by experts to verify the correctness of running operations and to understand problematic situations. To simplify and improve system analysis and errors detection tasks, we developed the TDAQ Analytics Dashboard, a web application that aims to collect, correlate and visualize effectively this real time flow of information. The TDAQ Analytics Dashboard is composed of two main entities that reflect the twofold scope of the application. The first is the engine, a Java service that performs aggregation, processing and filtering of real time data stream and computes statistical correlation on sliding windows of time. The results are made available to clients via a simple web interface supporting SQL-like query syntax. The second is the visualization, provided by an Ajax-based web application that runs on client's browser. The dashboard approach allows to present information in a clear and customizable structure. Several types of interactive graphs are proposed as widgets that can be dynamically added and removed from visualization panels. Each widget acts as a client for the engine, querying the web interface to retrieve data with desired criteria. In this paper we present the design, development and evolution of the TDAQ Analytics Dashboard. We also present the statistical analysis computed by the application in this first period of high energy data taking operations for the ATLAS experiment.

The visualization and analysis of dynamic networks have become increasingly important in several fields, for instance sociology or economics. The dynamic and multi-relational nature of this data poses the challenge of understanding both its topological structure and how it changes over time. In this paper we propose a visual analytics approach for analyzing dynamic networks that integrates: a dynamic layout with user-controlled trade-off between stability and consistency;three temporal views based on different combinations of node-link diagrams (layer superimposition, layer juxtaposition, and two-and-a-halfdimensional view);the visualization of social network analysis metrics;and specific interaction techniques for tracking node trajectories and node connectivity over time. This integration of visual, interactive, and automatic methods supports the multifaceted analysis of dynamically changing networks.

SOM network (self-organizing feature map neural network) learning with no instructors which has self-adaptive, self-learning features. The advantage is to maintain the topology of original data. It is in extensive application in the field of the data classification, knowledge acquisition, process monitoring fault identification and so on. SOM network is used for rotor fault diagnosis. The U matrix map and D matrix is used as visualization tools to simulate and analyses the classification results, and it is com-pared with the general SOM network clustering results. The conclusion is that the SOM network visualization method is simple and easy to understand, and has high rate in fault discrimination. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V. data mining techniques are becoming indispensable as the amount and complexity of available data is rapidly growing. Visual data mining techniques attempt to include a human observer in the loop and leverage human perception for knowledge extraction. This is commonly allowed by performing a dimensionality reduction into a visually easy-to-perceive 2D space, which might result in significant loss of important spatial and topological information. To address this issue, this paper presents the design and implementation of a unique 3D visual data mining framework - CAVE-SOM. The CAVE-SOM system couples the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) algorithm with the immersive Cave Automated Virtual Environment (CAVE). The main advantages of the CAVE-SOM system are: i) utilizing a 3D SOM to perform dimensionality reduction of large multi-dimensional datasets, ii) immersive visualization of the trained 3D SOM, iii) ability to explore and interact with the multi-dimensional data in an intuitive and natural way. The CAVE-SOM system uses multiple visualization modes to guide the visual data mining process, for instance the data histograms, U-matrix, connections, separations, uniqueness and the input space view. The implemented CAVE-SOM framework was validated on several benchmark problems and then successfully applied to analysis of wind-power generation data. The knowledge extracted using the CAVE-SOM system can be used for further informed decision making and machine learning.

Based on the sift research and changing data of land use from 1996 to 2008, the current situation and changes of land-use spatial structure in Tianshui were analyzed by applying GIS technology and quantitative geographic model. The results indicated that there were obvious internal differences in land-use spatial structure. Firstly, the diversity index of spatial structure was comparatively high;Secondly, the garden plots and transportation land increased obviously, though the index of land use degree fluctuates little since 1996, decreasing slightly as a whole;Thirdly, the information entropy of land use increased generally, and the total land use tended to random, the disorder degree of lands begins to increase and the types of land use are in a period of adjustment.

The treemap data visualization technique is applied to highway construction bidding for over 300 projects from the State of California in an effort to find factors that make a project more likely to have cost overruns. Factors studied included the number of bids, the number of project line items, the concentration of project cost in the largest costing line item and a measure of the dissonance between bidders. The treemap analysis indicated that projects with a low number of bidders signified that project cost overruns were more likely. Also, projects whose costs were dominantly concentrated on one single line item tended to have lower costs overruns as compared to projects whose costs were equally spread among all the line items.
